  • this episode I head out to the reef after being in Hervey Bay (K'Gari) for over month.
after a long anticipated weather window we set off into open ocean with a split in my mast and a newly installed anchor winch and drama that was about to unfold which I had no idea about!
I had never been out onto the open ocean before with my dad so I was soo excited to share this experience with him as we sailed alongside each other.
although some wild stuff went down I still felt filled with joy being at lady Musgrave and knowing that I made it there in one piece!

Great Video Sagey, Dad was totally cheating lol, and had to laugh at the “ bickies” comment. Sailing into darkness and wild seas is very brave. So glad you made the passage safely.

I love your videos and wish I had discovered sailing when I was your age. I had to sell my Precision 21 here in the Houston Texas area a couple of years ago. It just got too physical for me at 73 with a bad back. We just don't have the beautiful waters here you have in Australia. Your very lucky to live where you live, and to have a Dad that trained and influenced you. Live the dream and enjoy your life every day for us land dwellers, that have responsibilities that keep us from living on the water. God Bless you Son!

She was a decent sailboat, but she's not made for heavy long sails, and she's falling apart at the most critical areas. Time for a new boat!

    Some tips:
    1) Those wires on the new windlass I hope you insulated them so they don't arc together and tied them up so the chain doesn't tear them out, there is more length on the new one than the old one. BTW the old one is probably repairable (new motor?)
2)I know it's a temporary measure but you should wrap some electrical tape or similar around the bast underneath those metal straps you put on the base of your mast, those metal straps are stainless steel and your mast is aluminium, aluminium is the weaker metal so will corrode quickly from contact of dissimilar metals.
    3) The way you strapped down the beam bolt would do nothing but hold the bolt in, but if it has sheered like that, you will want to replace all of them, the rest are probably about to go, also they look rusted, so you need to figure out how the heads of the bolts have water, they should not be wet.
FYI Pearl is based on a Wharram Pahi design with some modifications, normally the beams are lashed on rather than bolted James Wharram stopped using bolted beams and even in his older designs the bolts had rubber blocks to absorb the shock loads: www.wharram.com/faq > Why do you lash the beams of your recent designs, and is it safe?

Hi I agree with Bryan Ford. The Wharrams were designed for components to be lashed. The way those bolts went vertically into the hull deck seems very contrary to the Wharram system. I strongly urge you to speak to someone with some good structural knowledge. My Wharram Pahi 31 was more as per design and used bolts similar to the one you showed us, but very differently to how it is on your boat.
Anyway, I would also like to add that your Dad is a very, very naughty boy.
Have fun all of you and keep sending the Utube stuff.

      thanks for the comment.
yes i'm very aware of the opposing forces and continue to keep an eye on the joins and bolts.
if I had it my way over it would be different. ut I just have to learn to live with what I've got until I upgrade....

@@TheMerTheMan that is great, knowing the weakness gives you a better chance of making do until you can do a better fix.
      Good luck and fair winds..

Stainless is only rust proof when air /oxygen is available. When salt water gets in a gap and stits there with no air it will rush though. As it did. Seal it up. Use ct1 or some water salt proof alternatives. Possable locktite or epoxy that is not so strong. Oxidation of the chromium in stailess is it friend so needs air.

Tie it off fella, them Wharrams were designed for lashed connections originally anyhow. Who-ever built her done you wrong there...

      @TheMerTheMan  2 года назад

yes I well and truly understand the flaws in the design. although there are opposing forces with the bolt replaced and the boat more shipshape im still very confident in her capabilities

That method of bolting the beams on is bullshit. Too much point load.
The beam needs to have a cap made that has a flange each side.
So imagine draping a square of wet fibreglass over the beam and for about 100mm either side and the width of the hull, now make it 5-10mm thick and bolt through the existing holes in the beam and either side. Also reinforce underneath the width of the flanges and down onto the hull sides.
    You won
    Dad cheated.
