    My 7 year old likes the Fashionistas and sporty Barbies (soccer), but definitely was into Monster High and Disney dolls more because of the movie/TV influence. My 4 year old loves the Barbies sets with babies and animals. Anything that comes with the sisters is also a win. They both love to dump out their Barbies and do outfit changes and make up stories so I agree... Barbie's still got it! I have a huge doll collection, so it's hard to tell if that influences them (probably)!

    Interesting points you guys brought up. I love these doll chats! Here's my two cents:
    As a concept artist, when designing the main character of a game, we're instructed to make him/her a 'blank slate' so that the player can fill in the personality. If you make the personality or design too strong, you alienate groups of people. So, odd as it seems, a more boring and simple main character inevitably succeeds more than an interesting and unique one.
    Perhaps the same is true with Barbie~

    • @back2s0ul
      @back2s0ul 7 лет назад +2

      That seems to be a common practice in storytelling in general, making the main character plain and new to everything and therefore relatable for the audience and then surrounding them with much more interesting and outlandish characters. I don't think there's anything particularly boring about Barbie, though we don't know much about her initially besides teen fashion model, but the blank slate thing applies because they do so many things with her. There's lots of options for people whether they are related to cost, fashion, theme, or gimmick. Then there's brand loyalty just from it being around so long, a cultural norm.

    I think Barbie is so popular every decade, with newer generations because she is The Fashion supermodel and essentially a time capsule of our time- reflecting fashion and trends if that decade whether it be in the doll itself or the dolls fashion, or the line and theme of a doll- take Baywatch Barbie for instance, at that time we were all obsessed with Pamela Anderson. And I feel this way if keeping record of time and fashion builds up a nostalgia over time and that's why people grow to love her so much.
    Love u guys, all the way from the UK

    • @Dollightful
      @Dollightful 7 лет назад +2

      That's a fun theory. I never thought of Barbie as a fashion time capsule before. That makes her pretty interesting :D

  • @Nutmeg1993
    @Nutmeg1993 7 лет назад +5

    I think part of the reason why Barbie has been around so long is that it keeps going from one generation to the next. Like my mother played with barbies and had fond memories and I think that's why she bought me Barbies :)

    For the next doll chat, you can talk about barbie's rivals throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s. Such as the Dawn dolls, Darci, Maxie and of course Bratz.

    I loved Barbie growing up, but looking back at the dolls I had compared to the new ones, I don't think they're that cute anymore! I remember being a kid and really struggling to dress Barbie over those rubbery legs and how frustrated I would get. It really shows in the clothes I have left that they did not hold up to that kind of play.
    I honestly had no intention of buying Barbies for my daughter, because as a biracial child, I didn't see her represented in the lines. With the new fashionistas, I was finally able to find dolls with a similar skin tone that were beautiful AND affordable. I buy her dolls in a variety of ethnicities, but I wanted her to feel represented in her toys.
    I don't mind the lack of articulation in the fashionista line because little kids who play with them bounce them around and the articulation kind of gets in the way.

    I agree with Barbie being the household doll name and one of the first fashion dolls, so she's the "go-to" doll. Also, Barbie has lines for different budgets. You can get the $6 Barbie or the $30 Barbie. She is within everyone's budget so she's more attainable. Also, Mattel has been good about marketing and really putting Barbie everywhere. Barbie can be found all over the store in different departments and all over tv.

    I'd love to see your thoughts on high end fashion dolls by Integrity Toys!
    I'm 20 and I never stopped loving dolls, but I didn't get serious about collecting until I was about 18.
    I will say that yes kids are playing with dolls but not as long because many "outgrow" the phase.
    I remember how Barbie looked as a kid and I love that her face and body has changed over the past 59 almost 60 years and I believe that's what still makes her relevant.
    When the company started it was Hot Wheels and Barbie and I doubt those 2 brands will ever leave Mattel. I do think that Mattel does saturate the market to have that variety there but the quality across the board has gone down severely, again because they are a company that makes toys for kids but the collectors dolls should have a sense of craftsmanship that doesn't exist anymore.

    Barbie has been around since 1959. Been around for over 5 decades now. I think Barbie is an icon and inspiration on fashion or anything---to anyone who love and grew up with Barbie. She has been #1 sale ever since she came out. Even now her sale is going down hill but she still knock down Bratz, Monster High, Ever After High, Moxie Girlz and even some knock offs Barbies. Now come to think of it, if I was a kid now would I like Barbie? I have a cousin who almost a preteen and she still likes Barbie. And I have another cousin who is 8 and she really likes Barbie. When ever they come to visit to my place or come to their houses they always ask me about Barbie and always want to see my Barbie collection. They really love Barbies fr. the 90's and early 2000's in my childhood. I always wonder will Barbie ever going to get discontinue? Will Mattel keep on producing Barbies for the next more than 5 decades?

  • @menerva4

    I played with Barbie up until I was way too old to be playing with barbie. I never like Barbie for the dolls, I liked Barbie for her clothes. I could honestly just have one doll that I like, and take the clothes off of the old ones and just increase her wardrobe. Now I still like the dolls and have thought about starting a collection, and trying to go back and repurchase my favorite old dolls and some of the old fashions. Now I feel that it's not so much of the dolls them selves that look cheap, I feel the clothes are cheaply made. Nowhere near the quality in Barbie's clothes or the materials that they were made of, then it was when I was growing up, I don't know if I would put money it to it like that.

    Mattel's bread & butter was Disney Princesses when they lost that licence it really impacted all their other lines. MH is in its death throws, EAH has been cancelled. The Fashionistas have no articulation and is criticised for the quality. Superhero Girls has not helped the corporate coffers either.

    actually barbie is pinker than ever its actually annoying lol back then her accessories and stuff were normal colors and didn't look as in ur face... nowadays dr barbie's stethoscope is pink, her dream house walls are pink, her freaking toilet is pink... and like, that specific blinding bright pink, not that classic, cute and soft bubble gum pink.

    if i was growing up now i probably wouldn't really care much about barbie. the 80s/90s pink box barbies- even the basic grocery store ones- were all about glam and fantasy. they took like a swim suit doll and still gave her gorgeous full hair, a pretty face up, a glitter suit and even jewelry. now a days their faces are so meh. their fashion is TOO realistic. i love that there is diversity and i would love to see more ( a doll with vitilligo, a doll that had a down syndrome specific face , more visibly disabled dolls in fashion lines ) but the fashions are so ...idk drab. it's like there's a few fun ones and then tons of black pencil skirt and grey scoop neck. khaki capris and white short sleeve. im bored! it's boring!

    We now play with Shoppies and Shopkins and are trying to get ahold of the older EAH dolls. We also like Pullips ( they are expensive, though) Num Noms, Tsum Tsums, and Animal Jam.

    U are so sweet! Continue girls!
    My opinion about barbie - I adore tris brand, because it teaches a lot of interesting and important not only kids, like tolerance. This brand goes in step with time and always evolves. There is big chois now about what doll prefers a kid, like the monsters or LOL OMG(which I adore also). And I think, that u are right - Barbie is a very famous brand. A lot of people buy barbie a couse of her name. But she continue to be a number one in the world.🌹🌹🌹

    where i live in Colorado i saw kids wanting monster high but their parents would say things like those are a little advanced for you. Then they would go for a barbie or shoppie doll. The parents in colorado are more conservative and since Barbie is not nearly as made up as she used to be i think a lot of parents see her as a safe cheap alternative. I also think people like to give Barbie as a gift because now a days most parents approve of her especially with the new fashionista line.

    Barbie is still around, because she's such an American staple and doesn't age. The Mattell corporation has such strategic marketing to hit different generations too. My niece who's gonna graduate high school this year, didn't like Barbies as much as Bratz and my 10 year old niece prefers Monster High dolls over Barbie now. I tried to like Barbie in the 90s, but preferred Sailor Moon Irwin dolls and Marvel comics action figures. So, although Barbie is the queen of dolls, some of us choose alternative things to collect. Also, show a video of Barbie with white dress and translucent shoes please! what's her name, she's cute!

    Couple years ago I actually thought Monster High was taking over Barbie. But Bratz, Ever After High and Monster High look like their on their way out. I agree it's the iconic name *Barbie* but their design people are doing some unique things today. I don't even want to get any more of the cheaply made dolls coming out now.

    Films, computer games, web series, video logs, etc. Remote controlled quadcopters becoming popular? Therefore Barbie rides a remote controlled quadcopter hoverboard! A giant corporation refines the perfect character wearing the perfect outfit to be perfectly desirable to all ages. A guy went into a shop and bought a big American Girl doll, and the shopkeeper kept referring to it as "a Barbie doll".

      MusParvulus no they don't in most instances. The Barbie body of 2000-2007 was probably the last decade which still retained the style of body of Barbie's first 20-30 year. The current bodies have a smaller bust, and slimmer more modern body type.the Made to Move and the Fashionista's are also unlike the original Superstar or previous generation dolls.

    I think Barbie is still around for the same reason any other old franchise is still around. As long as there is money to be made they're going to keep shelling out products. I can't stand certain franchises any more because of the crap load of merchandise all over the place. At least Barbie is mainly just a doll and the occasional animation. Disney will slap their characters on any and everything under the sun.

    I was born in 1965 so I grew up with the 60s' & 70's Barbie dolls. I also collected the 80's & 90's Barbies. I quit collecting them when my daughter was born in 2004. I'm very displeased with the quality of the Barbies today. I understand the cost to produce is higher today but make high quality dolls for collectors and make a lower quality for the play lines. Which I know they do make higher quality but the Holiday Barbies and other collector Barbies have gone down in their quality. I don't like they are pretty much straight legged not able to bend and pose. I don't like the outfits that have printed on out fits or better yet painted or molded clothes. No details at all like they used to be.
    I did not like the Bratzs when they came out because of their big heads small bodies and to change they're shoes you had to pull their feet off
    What if you lost a foot!
    My daughter liked Barbie for a short time until Monster High came out and then that's all she wanted. She had a few Bratz and Moxie dolls but really not interested.

    Barbie is still here because they refuse to let go of the brand. I have seen official videos of Barbie employees who have said this go around is it to keep Barbie afloat AND it might not even be enough. They have killed all their competing lines so that nothing is taking away from Barbie. Monster High is made of cheap plastic. Ever After High isn't around. Barbie should have died off around 5 years ago. Lack of diversity in looks and body types. The fashion Barbie's are ridiculously ugly and cheap. The backsides are plain the front has a pattern. Let's get real.
