I just --for the life of me-- do NOT UNDERSTAND why some people have to compare one musician to another. They each will have their own style which appeals to one person and not another. but that does not make one BETTER than the other. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". Remember and stop making stupid, needless comparisons. There's room for all styles.

You got THAT right! I was at the '46 Carnegie concert when they were the greatest and debuted "Ebony Concerto" and played the Ralph Burns repertoire. Whatta night. I'd just turned 15 and my Dad and I were head-scraping top balcony but I'll never forget it.

He's actually on stage (John Adams) but behind a pole from this camera angle. Kinda' like Pepper Adams the bari player for years with Thad Jones' band at the Village Vangaurd in NYC. Pepper had an obscured spot seated behind a pole, depending on where you sat in the audience. A small place, probably not originally designed with a big band in mind. I never saw anyone wearing mouse ears at the Vangaurd. There were probably rats nearby, but DL has more than their fair share of rats too.

I LOVED MAKING LOVE TO MY HUSBAND ON THE DANCE FLOOR WHILE WE WERE WHISPERING SWEET WORDS TO EACH OTHERS' EARS AND KISSING ON EACH OTHERS' NECKS. BRING BACK THOSE GOOD NIGHTS WITH THEIR GREAT MUSIC! I'd like to say it is interesting to hear the comments of young listeners comparing say... Coletrane with Getz. But it's not. It is straight ahead ignorant. Trane himself said, "We'd all play like Stan if we could. "
Put another way, there would have been no Ali if there hadn't first been Joe Louis. No Freddie Hubbard had there not first been Lee Morgan.
