James Dean's £5 million PORSCHE SPYDER 550 (Replica)

- The Porsche 550 Spyder was James Dean’s vehicle of choice, and for good reason. This lightweight racer was dominating motorsports throughout the 50s, but unlike today’s race cars, it’s very versatile and can also be enjoyed on the streets, preferably on the windy, coastal roads of the French Riviera!
Last time an original Porsche 550 Spyder was on the market it sold for almost £5 million pound (over $5M USD), hence why we today are driving a more attainable replica. It's made by Beck, giving you almost the same feeling as the original for 1% of the cost.

James Dean was killed when a speeding 1950 Ford Tudor crossed over the center line and into the oncoming lane hitting James Dean and his mechanic that was riding with him head on in his 550 Spyder. Although Dean was speeding prior to the fatal accident and had even been ticketed earlier in the day the following crash investigation concluded that Dean was driving approximately 55 mph at the time of the crash and the driver of the Ford that hit him was the one speeding. Regardless, if anyone was speeding or not a head on collision between a 3,200 lbs Ford and a 1,200 lbs Porsche 550 Spyder even if both cars we’re only going 35 mph would have still likely have resulted in a fatality. The 550 Spyder was made to be light and fast like all race cars back then and safety for the driver wasn’t a concern. It’s crazy that many race car drivers didn’t even wear a seatbelt because they felt they had a better chance of surviving a crash if they were thrown out of the vehicle rather than being trapped inside. Like many young Hollywood actors and actresses at only 24, James Dean was taken at too young of an age.
They were probably right that they had more chance of surviving a crash if they were thrown out of the car.
Love it. There's people that argue that Dean was not speeding, but, in a car like that, on an open stretch of road, and adding Deans "live fast and die young" attitude, I believe he was going at a good clip. That's the real reason why the other guy attempted to turn into his path. Back at that time the judgement of how long it'll take for a car to be upon you was thrown with Dean bolting in that little sled.
it's already been debunked that he was going around 120 mph, but i don't think the speed had anything to do with it
@@bloodfarmerit was a mixture of errors from both parties. Yes, Dean was probably speeding because he did brake before the impact which is why they estimated what speed he was going at but he was probably going at least 90. Because of the bright silver colour to the Porsche, the car could’ve been difficult to see during high. What makes it sound worse is that if Dean was wearing a seatbelt, he may have survived or even if he swerved to the left, he could have missed the Ford.
What a sharp looking motor. 550 latin pan-america raced in Cuba
during the late 50's.
Give me the replica any day! That car is sooo close to original that the price difference is ridiculous. Nice video sir!
Hell yeah, awesome car & video! The 550 is right at home on those French twisties. Keep up the good vids!
Thanks for the video. You would look right climbing out of that car and climbing into one of those sloops in 03:37.
Love it. Nice vid.
Jason Weigel Thank you good sir 😁
Hey,
Love the car. How tall are you? Was it a comfy ride?
I am 6'4 or 195 cm and it was not comfortable! Thanks for watching!
@@SilentDMotorShow I am 190 and consider buying the ne some day, can you be more specific what was uncomfortable?
That thing is sweet. Do you happen to know what vehicle they used to build this replica?
Sam Glorioso It's built by Beck. More info here: www.beckspeedster.com/generalproductinfo/beckspyder.html. Thx for watching!
The Silent D Motor Show awesome
Damn Pewdiepie
Where can I rent one of these?!
Bryant Chou In Nice! The company's (very descriptive) name is 'Rent A Classic Car'
I'm wondering what that "lady" in the last 5 seconds was gesticulating at ? Looked to me she wanted that dog in her shot but she was beckoning it toward your wheel...... and hell, we all know what happens when a dog gets close to a wheel ! Luckily for us you called CUT on your edit to save any embarrassment. Joking aside, I think I saw a small suitcase in your passenger footwell. Is that problematic when touring (I can imagine space is limited) ?
Graeme Craven Yes, she was waving at her dog. I think she wanted him in the picture too. Suitcase is my camera gear bag. This car has zero room for luggage.
Where are you from ??
Norway
