Italy:
Italy was almost a hinderance to Germany in the end, they were the 'soft underbelly of the axis' as Winston Churchill once said. While they had many positive aspects to their military like their surface fleet and reasonably sized airforce, they lacked strategy and straight up luck. They underestimated the Greeks and had poor conditions. They faced brutal forts against France and well absolutely sucked at taking Malta. They surrendered against the Canadians pretty quickly in Sicily and this may have been because the Canadians were just really good at warfare but still cmon Benito. Italy was however much more aligned with Nazi Germany than Japan. They were previously enemies but both had similar ambitions.
Japan:
Japan was a much more valuable asset in the short term I think for Nazi Germany. They had a very impressive navy, air force and a competent ground force. They occupied much of the allies Pacific colonies but would have greatly benighted from not attacking the Americans when they did. They should have instead focused on capitulating the British Raj and invading Australia and New Zealand to eliminate the allied threat in the region. Bringing in America probably cost them the war especially with the soviets also joining against Germany the same year. Japan was less aligned with Germany and the two didn't have as much military cooperation as Italy did with Germany because of the lack of easy travel between the two nations.
Verdict:
Italy more closely tied to Germany
Japan more valuable ally

GabeGamesAlot When the Allies invaded Sicily we entered a civil war between the Social Republic of Italy, under Benito Mussolini and still at war with the Allies, and the Kingdom of Italy, at war with the Axis.
GabeGamesAlot the italians had strategies, they lacked an objective cause Italy was basically some sort of puppet of Hitler so everything they were doing was only for the german reich not for the country they were serving.
GabeGamesAlot Australia would have been too hard to invade. All the main city's are on the coast, which would mean a constant tiring march all around Australia. Even if they just went through Australia, there would be too much desert. All and all Australia would have been a waste of time and effort. Not to mention capturing Tasmania as well... also the Australian and NewZealand military was/is really well trained, they were already half way to capturing the pacific before the Americans even got there. That's why they bombed Darwin, to try and distract them. It worked when Robert Menzies called in most of Australia's troops in fear of a Japanese invasion.
Sergente A Yeah it was split between north and south, also Mussolini wasn't really in control, it was just a puppet of Hitler and a provisional government as far as I know. But this does show how a few Canadians, Brits and Americans land on your home land and the whole darn country falls apart

Ferex 02 the only reason Italian troops covered the retreat of Germans in Africa was because the Italians got pushed across Africa like it was nothing they lost so much that Germany had to come to the rescue. I'll give them credit for the Russian campaign they did ok but that doesn't make up for all the losses, not to mention just giving up as soon as the Allies landed in Italy

Diplex! Here's something you wouldn't expect: Germany and Italy going to war in 1939 actually *negatively* affected Japan's ability to stockpile supplies and transport materiel prior to them entering the wider war. How did this happen? Merchant shipping, or more precisely the lack thereof in the Pacific. See, when the war started in Europe the European powers pulled back the majority of their merchant fleets to use them for the war effort or sent them to safe havens like the US when they got overrun by the Blitzkrieg. Before war broke out a significant proportion of goods coming into Japan was carried by foreign shipping whereas afterward the Japanese merchant navy had to do the majority of the heavy lifting while not really increasing in available tonnage. That meant there were less spare capacity for carrying troops and supplies across the Pacific while still being able to supply industry and feed the populace and making each loss a major problem. There's a video called Did Germany's Victorys Affect Japan by VisualiseHistory that has charts and diagrams showing the effects as time went by which I think you'll like, Diplex. So technically Italy helped defeat Japan? ^^;
You could do some Czechoslovakian Fortress and German as attackers, like "What if Czechoslovakia go to war scenario" would be really nice.

thats not true at all. the US was heavily influencing the Uboat war and the german navy wanted a war against the US in early 1941. the US was absolutly not neutral and helped the british heavily with supply and new destroyers.
For example: the us proclaimed half the atlantic to be their "home see" and escorded all ships in that zobne, basically stopping german uboats from attacking british ships without attacking us ships. That was a huge deal.
Germany fought the all major powers, most notibly the soviets for years and conquered nearly the hole of mainland europe, while japan conquered nearly undefended colonies ( after all the dutch and french had basically no armys anymore in 1941). to top it all the japanease couldnt even defeat china.
On the other hand germany defeated the european french and british army in less than 4 weeks, what couldnt been achieved in WW1 after 4 years of war. Germany was the MVP for the Axis, without a doubt.
I mean, Germany beat a few european countries and had Britain on it's knees, as well as invading Russia, which had one of the largest armies in terms of manpower at the time, and it basically took over a good third of a continent. meanwhile the IJA secured rocks in the pacific and invaded china.

A cool story about Italy is:
After WW2 the NATO made a contest to build a jet plane reliable, cost efficent, and can transport high ordinace, like a lot... long story short the Gina 91 won the contest on everything crushing the allies jet planes, so with that France and the UK did was basically cancel the contest negating the prize for Italy and the meriths that would have had.... yep that's it, but they look great for stunt flights tho.

i would have said that attacking each side individually is actually not a great strategy because as you said attacking the one side they would take fire from the other side and vice versa as shown when the other fort opened up on that tank in the beginning i would say a simultaneous assault on both side at once with amassed forces instead of waves alongwith a heavy artillery bombardment would be the most successful approach here as it would keep each sides attention focused on whats in front of them
you should look up a documentary called the last ridge it is about our 10th mtn div in the us army they were first deployed to take the mtns in italy and they loved their arty but its really cool and there was another about an American-Canadian mtn unit i forgot their name but they did some major fights too they were like a special forces unit. and the US would bomb or arty the crap out of that place before they assualted it but great videos diplex keep up the work you know more about the US then some of the citizens. maybe even me or not who knows.

Nice video! In my opinion japan did a good job for the amount of ships in the pacific area but as men deployed maybe italy in europe.
the M13/40 is a medium tank according to the italians (M for Medio= Medium) but it weight only 13 tons so is not really medium is more like light.
the Obice were used a lot against tank. they were more or less in all the branch of the army and usually they were the only AT weapon avaiable

I don't really remember the Italians being very important during the war. They defended Sicily (poorly) and relied heavily on missing German support. Meanwhile you had the whole war in the pacific being run by the Japanese, who nearly crippled the entire American Navy in one surprise attack, and if not for one stroke of luck for the U.S (some American carriers were not there by coincidence) might have come close to attacking us on our own soil. Meanwhile the Italians invaded Ethiopia (cause that's an awe inspiring feat of Italian military prowess). If I'm missing anything please remind me.

If you can try to find a mission of defending the last Polish standing city called Hel against Germans. It was completely militarized zone where were a lot of cannons and stuff. This city is placed on the Helish half-island that is 37 kilometers long (I think) and only a few hundred meters wide (like 200-400m). If you can't find and you have editor skills you can create it yourself. Google maps should help.
If you had donated 2 semovente 75/18 to the Italians, instead of the two ridiculous M13, then the attack on the left side would not even have reached the fortress ...

i think that both italians and japanese were pretty much useless for the germans, it's true that the japanese held up a lot of american troops and ships in the pacific but at the same time they involved the americans in the war too soon for the germans' comfort.

In terms of italy vs japan during WW2. Japan did more against the allies because of the campaigns in china, manchuria, the philipines and the pacific islands. Yet italy was help more favored more by the germans due to location and hitler thought of Mussolini as a great ally after his revolution in Italy and how successful it was. Yet the Italians fought only in North Africa for the beginning due to their inability to defeat the British longterm. So the german Afrika Korps. Had to help put and eventually take over the north African campaign. The italians did fight the french in the south during the german invasion of France. And after the allies pushed into Italy through Sicily the Italians and germans fought side by side. Japan though lasted longer and inflicted bigger and more casualties upon the combined British and commonwealth. With The Chinese and Americans.

Italy went to North Africa yes. But also in eastern front, greece, yugoslavia and so on. Italy had more front to fight on and also italy and the italian army was poor but they fought until 1943 then italy got split up in The North the Repubblica Sociale Italiana and in The South italy with the allies. Italians did the most for the actual axis war, the Japanese were mostly running their own war and offered zero assistance to Germany or Italy due to distance.

Hey Diplex, if w have Italy and Albania in Robz Realism, what if King Zog of Albania didn't submit to Italy and Mussolini? Hearts of Iron 4 shows that since Albania would be surrounded by neutral nations in mid 1939, it would be an Albanian beach defense with a mix of Albanian, early Italian, and mixed Balkan weaponry. A little alternate history suggestion.

I would really like to see a massive fort get half destroyed by aircraft or artillery and then the faction holding the fort have to repair as many guns as possible the hold off approaching enemies.
