My grandfather was a sapper during the second world war.
He was injured and forced to retreat into a forest at one point and he happened to stumble across a German medic that was on patrol was my grandfather's guess.
For a while they stood there staring at eachother with guns raised until the German medic noticed my grandfather's wounds and said in broken Russian
"You are injured,yes?"
My grandfather confirmed he was.
The German asked my grandfather if he would let him help.
My grandfather thought he had nothing to lose and let the German medic patch him up and give him water.
Hours passed and they had made a campsite, fire place and makeshift shelter.
They exchanged many stories about close calls and few moments of joy they had.
They're friends to this day.

This is so powerful. Actions speak so much more than words do. I feel that the Russian understood that as a soldier the German had to do it, but didn't want to go after meeting a friend, same goes for the German. He hated that he had to do that to someone he felt compassion or worry for, because he is another human being that didn't want to fight in a war he had no quarrel in. Truly a beautiful film with a very important meaning.

Both drew and aimed their pistols but neither men shot. They lowered their arms before walking to each other. My grandpa was wearing a coat that was Soviet standard issue and doubled as a tent for sleeping under during rainy days. So it was very drapy. The German aimed and unloaded the whole clip into my grandpa. Not one single bullet hit him but his coat looked like a fisherman’s net. He looked down and couldn’t believe his eyes. The German had the look on his face like he witnessed a Devine miracle. Then the German walked up to him, shook his hand. They exchanged looks that said “neither one of us want to be here.” They turned around and walked in opposite directions. Never saw each other again. But my grandpa was always grateful that the German didn’t take out his side arm and finished the job. He said it was a surreal moment for both of them. My grandfather was about this situation. At the beginning of the war, after a strong battle, he remained one of the company. Being in the machine gun nest with an assistant, a German tank drove over them and several turns in place, the tank buried them in the ground. Grandfather survived, got out of the ground. His arm, ribs, and foot were broken and his head peeled off his skin, which he stuck in place and put on a cap to stop the blood. When he trudged back he was already in the rear of the Germans. And at one point the Germans saw him and began to beat him with their legs and rifle butts. And left him to die. But he woke up, made his way through his forests and swamps, and after treatment in the hospital he returned to the front. He fought until the end of the war and met victory in Berlin !!!
My grandfather fought and was captured by the Germans. Later he escaped captivity and returned to the front.
Thats badass, the part that got me is "returns" Imagine being run over by a tank n going back!!
One of my Uncle was with the 6th Army in Stalingrad. He got 3 Shots, so he was one of the last once´s to get out by Airlift. He survived the War, but never really recovered his Health again. As I was a young Kid in the 70ties,I remember talking with him about the War.I asked him:"Uncle, do you hate the Russians who did this to you?" He waited, stared at me and then calmly said: "Why I should hate them? I only survived because I got these Shots, and all my Comrades died over there. I should have never been there in the first Place, but it was my Duty to go. That Russian was doing his Duty as well, and maybe he spared my Life, but I will never know until I meet him in Heaven. " At that Time I was to young and to stupid to understand what he told me, but nowadays when I remember that Conversation it get´s always Tears to my Eyes. He died some Years ago, and maybe he is there in Heaven together with this Russian Soldiers and they have a good Time and Party together! No more Brother Wars!!!!
PS: I will go to Wolgograd after all this Corona Shit is over, just to see what did happen there. I will try to understand........
@@Wuestenkarsten My grandfather's name was Gaydarov Magomed Kurbanovich, he is the father of my mother. When I was little, I asked him, "Grandfather, how many Germans have you killed?" But he answered this question, simply, - I don’t know, maybe I didn’t kill anyone. This answer shocked me, then, now I am grateful to him that he said just that, he did not want to share with his grandchildren the bloody burden that remained in his heart. He was always a simple rural peasant. After the war, he was still in Germany for a year attached to the commandant's office of a small German city. Being a good shoemaker, he repaired shoes not only to his comrades but also to local residents, he even learned to speak German quite well.

The film showed how we are addicted to the system. If he hadn't been someone else, he would not have killed. People do not need war, people are forced to kill. And the last choice was the best for both of them, otherwise they would have to suffer even worse and die anyway.

I saw of post on a channel “The Great War” where a supposed retired priest posted how he was with a WW1 soldier in the 80’s while on his death bed.
The old soldier was sobbing how he shot a 15-16 year old German boy who charged at him with a bayonet the day after the armistice...probably did not know the war was over.
He felt so guilty how with one shot he killed the boy....and did not try to disarm him instead.

My grandfathers fought for the Red Army. Most died in that war, only one reached Berlin. His niece (my mom) asked him, what it was like to shoot a Nazi? What did that terrible, monstrous enemy look like? He always replied that a person looks like a person, and after that, he fell silent. I am sorry for the millions of innocent souls who've had their lives taken.
No that’s good English and you aren’t wrong mate
Both from two sides, two cultures, two leaders, yet both know that they are just young men forced or willingly join their nation's cause. The Russian showed trust and kindness as well as the young German soldier, they drank, ate and smoked together. When the other Germans approached the young German knew that the others would kill the soviet and possibly him as well. You can see in their eyes that neither wanted to die, but it had to for the sake of survival, their was no boundaries or barriers. Both became friends without a single word spoken, it's sad and yet beautiful, poetry without dialog. Great work dear creator to show both sides in a better light and humane way.

Even though knowing this one is just a film, it broke my heart seeing him shoot him so he wouldn't die painfully, i bet he had so much hope until the other germans showed up.
Josh. I believe that also. Had the other German soldiers captured him, he would've been in much more pain, then killed. The young German soldier would've not survived. A commander would have ordered his death. He would have believed that the German soldier was a traitor. Many German soldiers believed to be royal to Hitler. Most didn't knew any better.
That's not why he shot him. He shot him because his fellow soldier's were approaching and he had orders to kill. Duty calls.
He didn't did it to end his pain
If he didn't did it his officer would kill both of them
