If you want to see a crowd reaction react to his song „Der Weg“ of the same tour. This one is dedicated to his wife who died due to breast cancer (his brother died within a few days too).
For those who don't know him as a singer-songwriter, you may have seen him in the mini TV series "Das Boot", a WW2 drama inside a U-boat.
He played the role of the war correspondent Lieutenant Werner.

Wow, I don't think I have heard this song in at least a decade. However, without the subtitles (which I assume had to be enabled somehow) much of the appeal is lost as it's a somewhat tongue-in-cheek celebration of manhood. Her is a sample:
Men have muscles
Men are terribly strong
Men can do everything
Men get a heart attack
Oh, men are lonely fighters
Have to go through every wall, have to go on and on
In context, if remember correctly, the song performed before was "Der Weg", which describes the feelings and emptiness after loss of his wife and his brother within 1 month. The song is heartbreaking, very emotional, tear filling your eyes, you feelthe scenario note by note. After that "Männer" was played to rise up the intimate mood. David, you should do "Der Weg" next. Although you may understand the lyrics but you will understand the meaning and I guarantee you that you will be unable to keep your eyes dry.

It's structurally very simple... but quite deep in its meaning.
It's basically a list of stereotypes about men. _Men do this, men are that._ All sorts. Posititive, negative, silly, serious. And the repeated question (roughly translated) "What makes a man a man?".
No judgement. Just fun. And, yes, it was a great hit. Thus his quaint intro "A now a song that nobody knows."
The lyrics make it. Pun characterizing the species "men" with all our attitudes.

I remember hearing this song in the early 80s when I lived in Switzerland.
The German title translates as "Men".

Actually it’s an 80th song and the one of the most recognized one of Herbert.
I‘m so happy that you liked the song. If you weren’t happy that would have upset a LOT of people because Herbert Grönemeyer is kind of the Bruce Springsteen of Germany and this song is the equivalent of “Born in the USA”. If you would have have disliked it, it would have been a complete disrespect to the whole German people and its music. Just imagine someone disrespecting a legend like Bruce Springsteen 😅 The score could have been higher regarding this legendary song that every German knows and loves to death!

I rarely listen to Grönemeyer myself, practivally never in the last 15+y (probably last when he wrote the song/ballad "Zeit, dass sich was dreht" for the football world championship in germany back in 2006) but he is really big in Germany, has been for 3 decades, 4 by now I think.
