The games story would've been similar to what Raystorm ended up being with there being a military coup on the Planet Secilia only this time it would revolve around this object called Iris Ore which is the diamond shaped core of the boss ship. Also looks like the entire game would take place inside a test colony which would formulate virtual reality segments for the player to go through. That explains the gibs of the enemy ships warping away, as well as the opening transition effect. There was also plans for 4 ships to choose from each with there own unique lock on. The Player-1 ship you see here is called the R-Gray 0, and the Player-2 ship is the R-Gray 1. The development documents stated that the R-Gray 0 was supposed to have fewer lock ons than the R-Gray 1 but that doesn't seem to be the case in this footage. Also there was supposed to be a choose your own path system ala Darius which would've taken you to different stages depending on the players performance/skill level. Unfortunately the game was scrapped in favor of Raystorm, and some of those concepts they had planned for R-Gear didn't make the transition. The story was reworked, the initial Arcade Version only gave you the choice of 2 ships R-Gray 1&2, and the game was linear pathed like Rayforce. Console Versions did add the R-Gray 0 ship, and the HD version added in the R-Gear ship which brought the total ships to choose from to 4. Even though some of the concepts didn't make it in to Raystorm, Raycrisis with it's virtual reality setting, and alternating of stages felt like a revisit of some of the ideas they had for R-Gear.
That initial transition before the start of the stage and the heavy use of polygonal motifs on things like enemy gibs, the boss' projectiles, and the boss' weak point make me wonder if R-GEAR's plot was supposed to involve a cyberattack on the Con-Human, like what RayCrisis ended up doing. Not much imagery that'd be pertinent to the Secilian ascendancy crisis plotline RayStorm would go with here.
@@LamestLameOK also the music tittlle called "Nomads from the ether world" explaining that the location that R-Gear stage 1 set is something like a Artificial Planet that human live since Earth already invaded by AIs in Rayforce timeline.
@@RuV9999 Yeah it's kinda hard to say since this game was scrapped mid-development so who knows where this would've been placed in the time period. I did notice that when the game starts the ship kinda spawns in like a computer program, and the background changes like it's in some virtual reality. So maybe it would've been a prequel like Raycrisis?
@@NCC-0000 I'm still thankful that this exist for the public. I'm very certain that they are getting tons of feedback from fans saying that they want to play a complete version of this game, but I worry that they wouldn't get all the original talent back together to see this happen, or maybe it wouldn't follow the original vision. Though the times were becoming progressive and working under Taito meant they were made to shift focus to the 3D gen, I think we can all agree that when it came to 32-bit vs Low-Poly 3D, the majority of fans would go with the Rayforce/R-Gear style especially in this current time now.
Yeah, I hate when companies do things like that. My only solace is that while this is an interesting curiosity its not exactly a full game... and I'm sure someone will dump the rom of it someday.
Hmm, i think that this game story is sequel of the metal black. In 8:41 , you can see half of earth, and in metal Black's ending, earth was split in half. And this game's bgm, feels like metal black in 5:52.

Really awesome to read this info. I wish we would've gotten R-Gear instead, but I'm still glad we got RayStorm and RayCrisis in the end.
This really is a thing of beauty!
Interesting. While R-Gear has R-Gray 2's lightning lock on, it still doesn't let players lock on to enemies that can be hit by the normal shot.
Although I didn't get satisfied, at least R-Gear got a little tribute for its main inspiration for Raystorm.

if you see when the ship spawn is pretty similiar like how Waveriders(Raycrisis's ship) Spawn after dying.
Earth looks half destroyed in the background so maybe it would've followed up from rayforce.

I hope we can get a full version of r gear.
I wish for that too, but I wouldn't hold my breath for it.
Probably that is everything that Taito managed to program and salvage of the beta/game

It should become a full game.
Nice play😊
Sadly it only contains one stage, really hope Taito rework on this game with modern graphics
Yeah it became Raystorm 😂
@@karnovjunior sadly raystorm didn't have those soundtrack and stages. only adapt it the R gear ship into R Gray 02 and R Gray 01

or maybe metal black exist in both Darius and Ray trilogy universe?

That's a good thought that ray series is a prequel to the entire Darius series but was never realized due to changing direction.
