This 😂 Last night my husband and I had dinner at Longhorn. We had the white cheddar stuffed mushrooms as our appetizer. I had taken the croutons off of my salad and set them on the empty mushroom plate. He started eating the croutons, and I picked one up, ran it through the cheese sauce from the mushrooms and gave it to him to try that way. 😂 Any excuse to pick up some more ooey gooey goodness. 💯 😂

Southern food ways are actually really interesting! While there are some foods that can be considered 'pan southern' there is still a lot of variation to those dishes regionally. Being in New Orleans will have a lot of Cajun influence in that gravy than you would find in gravy from Kentucky or North Carolina. Then there will be foods that are completely southern but only found in a specific part of the south or a specific state. There are whole books written about how food in the south developed.

Thank you for doing these videos. Sometimes I think US cuisine is underrated on the world stage and you are helping change that perception a video at a time. Much obliged, fellows, for showing the world how very, very good our food can be. As the other commentators have pointed out, we took the best from all over the world and ran with it. Add to that glorious international panoply an historical perspective (for example, our biscuits date back to early European settlers- think your navy's hardtack as the starting point- to which we added a bit of rise, fat and other flavors that improved over time) and an understanding of what ethnic groups settled where and a wonderfully complex picture emerges. You could travel the US for many years and still not taste everything there is to offer, but you are both young enough to give it a real go. Thank you for showing that we do not just eat crisps, boxed dinners and swill garishly-colored sugary drinks. Of course, we like those things too🙂but the reality of what we eat lies far beyond these. And the generous South holds a truly unique and special place in US cuisine.

And some of the food that was developed here was developed by the ingenuity of poor people and slaves so they had something to eat, and they made do with that by using what they had.

      > Of course there are very few foods completely native to the US.
There are more than you think. Just off the top of my head, some of the more obvious ones include sloppy joe; PB&J; soft drinks (the entire category, but especially root beer and cola); cactus jelly; corn bread; succotash; corn on the cob; popcorn; kettle corn; caramel corn; candy corn; graham crackers; buckeyes; green been casserole; Cool Whip-based (Jell-O and/or fruit) salads; waldorf salad; fortune cookies; condensed cream of tomato soup (unless you consider any soup automatically derivative just because other types of soup existed before); and that stuff with several dozen different names that's made from mini-marshmallows, Cool Whip, crushed pineapple, and pistachio pudding mix.
America and Canada have a roughly equal claim to maple syrup, and maple-flavored foods in general.

Guys, I grew up and live in the South. I’m glad to see our traditional foods raised to the level of “cuisine”. But I must admit that the simple foods my mother made, and the family reunions, really are something I miss. Casseroles galore, various peas and beans, cornbread and rolls, fried chicken, ham, and the most wonderful desserts you can imagine. Sadly, I am old now and relatives have mostly passed away.

yes cuisine! too often the south is said to only eat deep fried food. That misconception saddens me because they miss out on all the wonderful things we offer. What I would give right now to have smothered cabbage and some peas with cornbread or okra and tomatoes over rice!

This is exactly why I love that they are doing this series. A lot of people outside of the US don't know much about our food and how diverse it is - Midwestern, Southern, Northeast, and West all have different things. I grew up in the Midwest and we have meat, corn, cornbread, casseroles, yams/sweet potatoes, etc. I think the Midwest shares some commonalities with the South.
