Dr. Joseph Hobbs, Chair Emeritus of the Department of Family Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University, discusses a potential new “early warning system” to spot chronic rejection in organ transplant recipients.
“Chronic rejection is the most common reason kidney transplants fail. To improve the success of these life-saving organ transplants, scientists developed a humanized mouse model. It has the immune system of the patient that needs a transplant. The blood of potential living kidney donors can be given to the humanized model to see how the patient’s immune system responds. Evidence indicates it’s a much more comprehensive assessment than current methods to identify the best donor. Now those scientists want to know if, after transplant, their humanized model can also serve as an “early warning system” that the recipient’s immune system has started to notice the new organ. Current monitoring methods tend to look for signs that the transplanted kidney already has been damaged. I’m Dr. Joseph Hobbs.”
