I love the idea that someone was going around writing reviews of pub signs, and that these reviews have survived the ravages of time.
That was my favourite fact too!
Just been reading Alice Loxtons book Uproar about the 18th century and the satirical print trade , it seems that images where quite rare on the streets not like today when there are so many, so when a new pub sign was put up it was quite the event to go and look at it and yes some one would review the work! we are bombarded by imagery all day long now, how different it must have been back then.
It's weird that he is not better known as an artist, this looks really well painted, those eyes look so alive.
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to meet the artist and see his work. This painting looks very promising and I can’t wait to see how you bring her into the light again!
Hopefully your customer will decide to go for a full restauration!
You're right about the kindness in her face and you're doing a beautiful job bringing that back out again
Thank you I think she does have a really kind face
The cleaning stage is the most marvellous. Thank you.
Looking at the distaff she is spinning from, it is possible that Mrs Calvert is spinning flax/linen rather than wool. It will be interesting to see what type of wheel she is using when you clean the lower right hand side.
You do brilliant work. Love that this one has local history! ❤
Fun tour of your town, thanks for that! I enjoy hearing about the history and seeing the sights.
I just found your channel. I like the effort you put into the background of the artist and in this case going to where he was born! Fascinating. Thank you!
We think she's beautiful! Cleaning up wonderfully!
Thanks guys! whe is coming along nicely!!
She looks very kind. Too bad you can’t work on it completely, it is a very pretty painting.
Nice way to end the weekend, with one of your videos!
Hope you enjoyed it!
Splendid...
I know I've said this on Patreon, but I love when you go out and about, looking into the history and the artist.
Thanks , this was from a while ago so apologies for the sound when Im walking! was very blowy!
It would be fun to see before & after pics when you’re done with a painting.
Oooh she looks quite promising! Looking forward to seeing what comes of that murky background and her clothing.
Interesting subject -- quite a dramatic change once the dirt and yellowed varnish goes away. Sorry it's not getting a full restoration, I'm sure there's lots more you could do for Mrs Calvert. You seem to be soliciting feedback about your videos, so I'll offer this: I'm not uninterested in the walking tour of Manchester, but I think that, rather than filming your 'talking head' moving through the area, show us the area and add the description as a voice over. The audio would be just as interesting, and much more clear without all the extraneous traffic noise and wind noise. Besides, walking down a city street with a phone held up in front of you and chatting away is just asking for a collision. I do enjoy your videos and look forward to more progress with dear Mrs Calvert. Thank you!
Noted, I realised this in editing! lots of wind makes it difficult to hear, Ive been filming today some static shots in an around Manchester and will feature these in a later eposide! thanks for your feedback it definitely helps me plan futire episodes
I think she is beautiful.
Always happy to see you. Nice work as usual.
Always pleasing to see the dirt and varnish come off. But more pleasing to see what is revealed. Your walking history tour is very interesting. Who knows what lies beneath the modern streets, or is encased in modern buildings. Thank you!
glad you enjoyed it, so much history is just built over, and then lost...Manchester is rapidly developing too hope it holds on to some of its heritage
@@Bloomfield_Art_Restoration I understand. I live where a major civil war battle was fought. Troops were on the subdivision land my house is on. They camped 800 feet from my house. The city keeps building on the battlefield, destroying history. It’s sad. Your artwork reveals so much history and is a way in which those people recorded history, just as death masks have been made for millennia. Your history research adds a lot to your videos. Even if it isn’t the history of my country it is still interesting! By the way, I have metal detected civil war artifacts in my yard and down the street. I found a bullet that had molar impressions in it. Sometimes the troops chewed on the large lead bullets.
Love that this is a mature woman spinning. It makes it seem more realistic especially with the nose I’m sure she wasn’t happy with it but I feel like it enhances her beauty by being a contrast.
Holloway and seven sisters road are also areas around Islington London just btw. So this painting might have travelled a bit??
I’d love to know more about the pub sign critic? This was a job? And it was published for prosperity? Let’s Bring It Back! 😂
Not sure if it was a job or not but yes could be a spin off RUclips channel!!
Whenever you say, I think that's it for today, my first reaction is noOoooooo! Love watching you work. The background information on the paintings is very interesting.
Thank you glad your enjoying them
It reminds me of a Gilbert Stuart in the Smithsonian Catherine Brass Yates, nearly same costume the sitter in that portrait is threading a needle.
Ever tempted to grab a little sponge and use that instead of endless q tip ends?
What was the typical price of a portrait in that area for that time period? That price he was charging doesn't seem like very much.
A lot of it depended on the artist and how popular they were at the time.
Bother. I’m looking for an image of “The Ticket”, but it isn’t coming up on my internet search. Have I missed something?
It may have been called the Kings Shilling - it was whatever they gave you to recruit you into the Army or Navy
Yes - The King’s Shilling, ruclips.net/video/c0d8O1ktm3E/видео.htmlsi=KNgmRcI2EYLL5QhB
This lady is spinning flax, only watching less than 5 minutes but I can see the distaff and thread
Her face looks familiar. Have you released this video before?
He says at the start that it was originally released on Patreon.
She seems familiar to me as well. Maybe one of Baumgartner's restorations? The Lady of the Manor?
I doubt it’s one of Baumgartner’s. The finish on the tacking edge and backing aren’t consistent. Lady of the Manor was a different sitter and artist.
You will have seen this on my Patreon, once they have been up there for around 6 months I then release them on RUclips
Weird you say she's not the most attractive when her nose is shaped like yours.
