  • The Mackerel are back which means free bait for the creels. Barry heads out before dawn to catch some mackerel before pulling the four sets of wooden creels in the Norwegic sector and shooting them inshore.
Also there was a quick repair to a flag end that had been run down and the rope was cut.

Wow the accent takes me back Barry to working in Leith in my twenties and one of very few surfers that called Pease Bay their home break. Now in my seventies and calling OZ my home I I still remember catching Mackerel with my old man on feathers and a sinker with a hand line, Great footage.

So aggravating...now matter how many times ive hit the subscribe button it just dont seem near as satisfying as giving it your all on the sea. Love it. Amazing content. Me and the wife are tryng to retire in the next 10 years and finish out our days fishing and traveling on the sea. ive been a mechanic for 25 years and we are trying to learn all we can. Learned a lot from some family in florida that have a rigged center console for some trolling and a few other things. We are looking at a 40-50 foot combination boat. Maybe with no engines so i could install something updated and more efficient. Work are way into it over 5 years. Fingers crossed anyway.

Chap on Anglesey showed me how to quickly despatch mackerel, I expect you do similar. Index finger into the mouth, pad upwards, to the back of the head, thumb on top of the back of the head, quick twist upwards to snap the spine.
Love a bit of mackerel and great sport on really light tackle.

      Hi John.
Thank you so much for your comment.
There's also the knife at the back of the skull and draw it forward method, very barbaric, but does the job just the same.
I must admit, I prefer the way you described it. It's far quicker and less messy.😁👌
Mackerelling is such fun when they are running.

Yeah, I was shocked and took a wee minute to figure out how we got into this situation and how to solve it.🤣🤣🤣
It's nice to see the mackerel running.
It's far cheaper and fresher pot bait than the frozen stuff we have to pay over the odds for.
      Plus...it's blooming fun.🎣🎣🎣😍😍😁👌🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I wish I could post a photo or video. I came across a school of Mackrell recently in South Australia. The Mack’s were all above 450mm long. Probably 4 acres in area and went from the surface down to about 20 m. There must have been millions of them. We caught about 10 of them and smoked them. Very tasty

I used to love fishing for mackerel in the 1970s it was magical,
Blue shark fishing waters on the see front in Rhyl north wales
I was in my teens and couldn’t wait for the holidays,we were from Coventry
Hard work on a trace of six,
They were much bigger then ,it’s nice to see it still off the line
My last trip was with my youngest son in colwyn bay
2005, we would venture out off the coast near Llandudno the great Orme and bout 6hr trip memorable experience he loved it ,that day I spent most of the time untangling his fishing lines lol

Mackerel bashing...love the phrase. Back up in Rhode Island we used to have massive mackerel runs. Two guys, one rod each, four hundred pounds an hour. Two hours of fishing & you could almost pay for your fuel for the day. Yea...the big guys used to shatter the price. @ five cents a pound. We got our hands on an old walk-in cooker & converted it into a smoke house. No more nickel a pound anymore mackerel for us...lol. Love the vid. Thanx for posting Bud.

@@onemanandhisboat Heck you need to remember this was back in the day. Late 70's. Most of what we were selling was bootlegged to restaurants & hotels. COD bud. And I'm not talking about the fish. lmao. Now a days you can get away with a little bit of "shack" (cash sales). But not much. Today with the licenses & health inspections it would be almost imposable for the little guy to score three of four times a month without breaking one law or another.

I've just found your channel and it's brilliant. It brings back extremely fond memories of my holidays in roseharty . I had family up there and had family friends with a trawler, yes it's slightly different but our family friend also went into lobster fishing when he retired from trawling. Absolutely love it please keep it up. You have a new subscriber. Many thanks Graham

We used trawl as well, but with things getting ridiculous from the government, we decided to down size to something more manageable for one man.😁👌
I'm so glad you have joined our ever growing family, and we do hope that we can keep those fond memories coming coming back, with our vlogs.😁👌

1975 , When I was 9 yrs old my dad took us fishing , out of Lyme Regis, on a 2hr mackerel charter boat trip we were fishing with hand lines .
I never forgot the magic of that bump bump bump when I caught my first Mackerel.
It was a Tuna in my mind .
    A gift from the sea.
I always tell my kids, fishing is like Christmas,

@elmerfud44 - this is Jeff Carter (OMAHB Cameraman / Editor / Producer). First of all thank you for subscribing to the channel and taking the time to binge watch the videos. On your suggestion, as Barry says we do take all views into consideration. Sometimes we need the music to cover up the howling wind, the blank spaces in between chats and to put underneath the drone footage. However the latest few vlogs I have edited I have left some of the sequences without music as the ambient noise from the sea-birds etc has been good (plus Barry has been very chatty - more than usual). So please bear with us, we will have some sequences with music and others without. Thanks again for your support :)

      I've worked on a GM33, 2 infact.
And we used to own a GM32 before the idea of the Lynsey B came about.
Great sea boats, but like you say, very rolley Poley! Can't beat the Cygnus roll🤣🤣🤣🤣
She does 5.5knots at 1700 rpm.
Obviously, she can do more, but being a displacement Hull, she will always be limited on speed.
But what she lacks in speed, she makes up in sea keeping. She is the BEST boat I've ever had the pleasure to sail/ work on, for her size😁👌

Great Both informative & realaxing to view is it essential to go boat fishing for Mackeral to increase your chances ? As I’ve never caught any off Chesil beach in Dorset or Ilfracombe pier North Devon ? and exactly how far out and deep is 14 Fathoms ? Would be great to know that keep making the videos looking forward to the next buddy 👍🏻

    • @onemanandhisboat
      @onemanandhisboat  11 месяцев назад

      Hi Ian.
Thank you very much for your interesting questions.
No, you don't need a boat to increase your chances, especially if you have a long pier.
It really all depends on your area and how the shoals are moving through that area.
Ask a local fishermen, they can give you a better idea of where and when best to fish.
Fathoms is basically half in meters.
So 14 fathom is 28 meters.
It's the way fishermen have always measured.
For us, 14 Fathoms is about 1.5 to 2 miles out, depending if we are east or west of the harbour.
I hope these are the answers you're looking for.
      All the best.😁

You are so correct, right of the boat and onto your plate is the only way to eat mackerel.. because it's an oilly fish like herring, and length of time, or any type of heat of day, and it starts breaking down rather rapidly.
I hope your next mackerel tasting will be a better experience 😁👌

Atlantic and Atka mackerel from Alaska are high in inflammation-fighting omega-3s and low in mercury, but not all mackerel get a thumbs-up. King mackerel, from the Western Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico, has a high mercury content. Zumpano suggests limiting Spanish mackerel as well due to mercury concerns.

No, I didn't lose my pots, we have 2 ends on our fleets/ strings.
It's just a matter of going to the other end and hauling from there, then sort it out in the right direction when you get to the end of that fleet.😁👌

Hi I seen your video about making scupper covers from stainless but I see you have changed your mind with them. Was there a reason for it? Ave just bought a boat with scuppers and was looking for ideas for covers.

      Hi Craig.
Thank you very much for your comment and question.
It was more to do with the dreaded MCA route.
The basics answer to your question are the scupper covers I have now, will let more bulk water out ( not that a 21ft boat will be out in conditions to get bulk water🙄🙄🙄🙄)
Where as the stainless cover would only let out inches of water out per scupper, if that makes sense?
So, as nice looking, and probably better for keeping water out a small vessel, in the MCA's eyes, they are no good.....but! That was just my vessel, I'm sure you know how the MCA work by now, with the inshore sector ( they DON'T!😡😡😡)
I hope your boat will be different. 🤞🙏😁👌
I hope that answers your question, bud.
      Any more, just fire away.
      All the best.😉👍

@@onemanandhisboat Thanks very much for replying. Yeah that’s makes sense you need to keep yourself right. Ave bought a 27ft boat purely for pleasure so I don’t have to worry about MCA. I think I’ll go with the stainless option because I think it looks better. Thanks again for replying and your help. All the best buddy👍

For the UK, at least we hardly have a fishing industry now, all thanks from poor management responsibilities from our government.
They would rather sail sustainable small business under the bridge and increase industrial fishing (ships) and you can tell their plan due to the ridiculous regulations of small business are having to suffer, because of there greed....but as far as my comments go, this is world wide🫣🙈
