  • Welcome aboard , in this episode we spend a day at sea on an hartlepool based commercial prawn trawler . It is christmas Eve and the rest of the fleet are tied up ready for christmas , will the trip be worth it ? What else would you expect to see amongst the catch ?
    Watch and find out how the prawns on your christmas cocktail are caught .
    I hope you enjoy the video .
    Tight lines
    And all the best .

    Dredging cockles and mussels in the wash which was the nursery of the North Sea, had a negative affect of North Sea fisheries. As someone who fished over many years in craft from small to massive its clear to me that there is no living to be had on inshore vessels now. Either go big or go home. My sibling operates a deepsea boat West of Ireland & right up to Iceland & the cost involved is unbelievable. For the hours involved if you were working in a skilled job on shore who would probably be as well rewarded. But as the Skipper there stated its in the blood & its for life. I see that you have birds following you. That is something I thought all trawlers have. Yet I was watching a video of Indian fishermen, not a single bird & as for their catch , the main was a silver fish around the size of a £2 coin. Nothing was waisted, if a fish was thrown back it was by accident. what would you say the reason birds don't follow the Indian trawlers?

    • @thehartlepoolangler
      @thehartlepoolangler  2 дня назад

      @@ColinLennard hi colin thank you for your comment …. You have sort of answered the quistion yourself within your comment …. The main reason birfs follow boats is for a free meal …. The indian boats unfortunately keep everything they catch with nothing going back . Hence no meal for the birds . The birds will no this and hence not follow the boats .
      Birds follow the british trawlers, due to the times that they can grab a bit of the byecatch before it manages to swim back down to the depths , but also when boats are catching fish they are gutted instantly bfor boxing up , and the guts go over the side . This providing another meal .
      Hope this info answers and is helpful . 👍🏻🐟

    • @thehartlepoolangler
      @thehartlepoolangler  Месяц назад +2

      Thanks for your comment . Totally agree . The gill netting game in the northeast is totally finished due to the massively growing seal population .
      They are now taking bait out of the bait band in pots . Swimming down the cod end on trawlers also . Most of these seals are not scared of humans and have had human interaction at some point in their lives so see a human as a food source . Imo there needs to be a cull like norway to make an healthy population .

    • @captainwull
      @captainwull Месяц назад +1

      Its impossible to over fish in a mixed demersal fishery. Long before there are no fish the boats will go bust and the stocks replenish themselves.
      What we actually have in the North Sea is too much fish and too little boats catching them. As a result the stocks have grown out of control and there isn't enough feed in the Sea for them. The Haddock and Whiting you see in the video are all small because of a lack of feed. A 5 year old North Sea Haddock will weigh app 400 to 500 grams. A 5 year old Haddock in Iceland (where they fish hard) will weigh 1.5 - 2 kilos.

    • @thehartlepoolangler
      @thehartlepoolangler  Месяц назад

      @ thank you for your comment , i appreciate your oppinion but totally disagree personaly .
      The herrings stocks got blitzed years ago off our coast , mainly by the big danish boats , hence the reason there is no proper feed for our fish to feed on , another point is , there is very little cod , hardly any inshore , so how can they grow big when there is none.? Yes whiting and haddock , but the haddock have been very very scarce up untill this year and yes they are all chats .
      In response to iceland , the feed is there for the fish to grow on , good herring stocks , same as norway .
      Some people say the water quility is alot better some people say the fishing is governed alot better . Imo both of these play a part in the fishing and stocks being alot better there .

      @captainwull Месяц назад +1

      @@thehartlepoolangler I said Demersal not Pelagic.
      I should post up some videos of us dumping thousand of boxes of Cod at the Seine Net. There are plenty of Cod and Haddock on the main North Sea fishing grounds.
      I have been at sea for almost 50 years. What I have noticed is that when a fishing ground gets left unfished for many years it more or less dies off. I believe this is because you need to turn over the soil on the seabed to keep it healthy, much the same as a Farmer needs to plough his fields.
      I first started to notice this when hundreds of boats got decommissioned in the late 90's and early 2000's. The areas that kept on being fished still produced good shots whereas the areas that stopped being fished due to the lack of boats died off. You only need to look at inshore Prawn grounds such as the Firth of Clyde, Firth of Forth, Dunstanbury etc. These areas have been fished intensely for generations and still produce plenty of Prawns. However, the areas east of this that were predominately Haddock grounds are never fished by white fish boats anymore as they were all decommissioned and now barren.

    • @thehartlepoolangler
      @thehartlepoolangler  Месяц назад

      @@captainwull again i respect your comment , i can only commen on the inshore waters where i have fished . There is no feed hence there is no fish .
      The fish follow feed . If your pelegic fishing for herring or makerel your bound to get alot of cod . They are up in the water chasing the feed . If a bottom trawler towed the same grounds they would probably catch very little compared to what you get .
      You are not wrong in what you are saying your whitnessing it first hand and so are we here hence the difference in opponions
      Thank you good luck with your fishing .

      On the salmon front around our coast its the absolutely huge seal population that has decimated the stocks , the seals pick the salmon off before they get up the river tees at the barrage 👎🏻🐟
