Elephants react during total solar eclipse at Syracuse zoo

- The Asian elephants at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo may not have gazed up at the sun in awe the way we did April 8, 2024, but they did react as their surroundings suddenly became dark in the middle of the afternoon.
The herd was scattered about the yard grazing, and when it started to get dark they came together, which is what you would expect in the wild if something made them uneasy.
The herd kept the babies near them, and Targa and Romani shared a reassuring touch of their trunks when the light returned.

It is safe to say that at least the animals got a first-hand example of how humans react to solar eclipses.

Maybe they are reacting to the extra hyperness of the crowd over a bit of shade for a while and not the eclipse itself.
May be the Elephants are observing the strang behaviour of the human species during the eclipse!?
I’d be more frightened of the crowd screaming their heads off.
I'd say they were reacting to the crowd, It may not get pitch black but it gets dark before a big storm, they would be used to darkness in the daytime.
They have no idea what the Sun and Moon are.
Good way to terrify the poor elephants with the eclipse and all that screaming.
They don't realize humans reacted the same way end up going to the hospital or sick for a few days. Now people wondering if it was more than an eclipse. Idk

Why are the people allowed to be so noisy around the elephants?
I get that the eclipse was amazing but why do humans feel the need to scream so much? Let's try to be quieter. The crowd should have had greater sensitivity towards the animals at this time. Thank you for sharing. What a silly species the human race can be !

I agree that the screaming and hollering may have disturbed the elephants - but most people reacted this way to totality, including where I was. It's not even a conscious choice - you can't help vocalizing at such a sight!

Probably better to get them used to loudness. My house is quiet as a morgue, and that's caused most of our pets to be scared of loud sounds. One of our dogs actually got sick from fear when we redid our back room. The racket that the nail gun made terrified the poor dear. And another dog we had would cry when we yelled at footbal....

Animals/Birds are naturally genius and don't need any schooling. They sense changes in Mother nature much before humans and take all measures to seek safeguard. They have all senses highly active. Gratitude to mother nature ❤🙏
No the elephant def knew something werid was happening their very smart they might not have reacted but they felt and knew something they even huddled up

So what's normal.....I mean what's normal elephant behavior? What are you comparing their behavior with? Do you have footage of this herds behavior on a normal day?
@gregoriancatmonk6904 grazing, like their doing, have done and continue to do is normal behavior. And although I do not have any video of said behavior, having lived on orchard road for 50 years and being ti the zoo 100s of times since it opened, absolutely what they do everyday.

This is so ignorant...these animals reacted like some ppl did ..nausea fainting weakened some became sick bcus CERN interfered. That poor elephant.
