    Thanks for a great Vid.

    Something I learned from automotive class regarding brake rotors: the brake lathes which resurface them don't actually cut the cast iron but rather break it off continuously kind of like if you use a plaster scraper on ice.

    Thanks for the info it was really useful, as you say disc brake rotors are the easiest to come across for most of us, maybe you could do us a video of how to prepare and do some casting with one from start to finish... ps your the best iron caster anywhere else on the net

      I make iron cast videos because not many are doing the same on youtube. Maybe that has changed so could you please tell me of others who are making iron melting videos

    Very informative video. Shame you busted up the tractor seat though. A bit of clean up and a few turns of wood and it could have been sold for 10x the scrap value. Antiquers go nuts for this kind of stuff.

    Hi! I'm Brasilian and when I see you melting iron looks very easy, but I know that is not easy, at least for me. I'm following your steps.
    I'm still taking too long to melt, about 3 hours.
    I really admire your work.

    • @luckygen1001

      How much are you trying to melt at the one time?

      I'm trying to melt iron about 600ml, A6 crucible.
      Now, I have improved my diesel burner, get up more the crucible in the furnace and today I'l trying again.

    I learn something from almost every video you make. But I appreciate this one especially. It's really the basics. But you have to walk a bit before you can crawl. And getting the right materials in the first place is the basics of a good casting.

    Are cast iron bbq hot plates & grills considered a good melting iron?

    • @luckygen1001
      @luckygen1001  6 лет назад +1

      I have never used it but it should be a good melting iron because it is very thin, breaks easily. If you need to drill holes in the casting it will be soft enough.

    I have a question if you do not mind me asking. Am doing some blacksmithing and additionally to my anvil came across an old imperial weight 56 pounds and it should be cast iron. But it looks like it has been used as an anvil before as it is all pounded down on top and bottom. Any ideas if that is cast iron. Perhaps you know if it is malleable grey or white? Don't know much about this. Thank you for your help.

    • @luckygen1001
      @luckygen1001  7 лет назад

      All of those weights were made from cast iron because it is cheap to make. That size weight would not break very easily but it would be highly unlikely to malleable or white iron.

    So cast iron you can break with a hammer...and steel not.

    Hi luckygen1001, Another excellent video. Very informative. Shocked that you would destroy a classic tractor seat, so if you have access to any more then please let me know. I was thinking that a sand blasting booth would come in very handy for cleaning up scrap iron prior to melting it down. Keeping in sweet with tradies whose by products are scrap cast iron would also be very useful, like the local garage and or scrap merchant. I recently asked my mechanic for my old brake drums when we swapped them out, so I know I have a source there.

    While I liked your vid, I can't believe your broke a $350 US McCormick Deering seat? That flywheel would bring well over $100 at the antique stores for decoration. Other than that great Vid,

    • @luckygen1001
      @luckygen1001  7 лет назад +3

      Would you pay those prices for the seat and flywheel?

    • @walterbeech

      I bought one for my IH Lister about 5 years ago but now they are going for well over $300. How much would it cost to ship to the states? DO you have a lot of them over there? If you put a piece of antique farm machinery in your yard here they steal the seats off of them so they are always in demand. The Amish cast reproductions out of Aluminum but they are getting over $100 for them and they don't hold paint outside.

    • @luckygen1001
      @luckygen1001  7 лет назад +2

      I tried to sell that seat at a swap meet and the most generous offer was Aust 5 dollars. Shipping heavy items to the states is very expensive but it is a lot cheaper to post heavy items from the states to Australia. I do have a lot more of them but they will be broken up for my furnace.

    • @rupert5390
      @rupert5390 6 лет назад +1

      Naah you're a bit behind the times swap meets are attended by tightwad silly old men - tractor seats are worth well of $400 AUD to young people as industrial retro furniture ant retro shop would have bought it off you - you singer sowing machine frame worth about $300 AUD also - chaff cutter week now antique machinery - you are basically destroying antiques to make toy engines.

    Just found your channel and subscribed! I really like it. I've got a question for you, would you happen to know what type of cast iron is used in various tools such as in Vises or Lathe bodies? Would it be grey cast iron? Or would it be another type? Do you know if it is hardened at all? Or just cast and machined flat?

    • @luckygen1001
      @luckygen1001  7 лет назад

    I used to use metal blades, but discovered that concrete blades are better suited to cutting cast iron.

    Why can't the bolts be melted at the same time - Cast Iron has much higher melting temp than steel - Isn't it? the bolt steel will be melted away before the cast iron melts - If leave them in there - the cast iron iron/carbon comp may change a bit - but that does not matter - or does it?

    • @luckygen1001
      @luckygen1001  7 лет назад

      So what makes you think that cast iron has a higher melting point than steel? You need to look up a carbon/iron phase graph.

      the last farm auction I attended had 10 seats from several makes of tractors. The rare ones near $200us. The lowest one $85us. The freight charges might kill your sales but you might try the U.S. market if you have others.
      They are a hot market lucky ........
