Absolutely breathtaking. His South African roots shine through every chord. The lyrics are addicting and memorable. His voice remains gorgeous after years and years in the industry. You cannot deny this talent.
Whenever I tell friends that he doesn't have a genre, that he is his *own* genre, they all give me a strange look and try to categorize him as "alternative rock"...but he isn't. He is, simply put, Dave Matthews. His sound, his presence, his skill...none of it can be duplicated, mimicked, or copied in any way and this performance just proves my point.
The perennials usually are. :) (Maybe your friends are trying to take that first step to possibly enjoying Dave's music? Sometimes that entails getting their head around what his music sounds like. My strategy for this: 'Acoustic' --- and if they like maybe...something like 'Christmas Song'...it's easier to introduce tracks with the full band.)
Truth be told: This voice (and a few others) helped me get through 2,941 days of incarsanation... Still how this song resonates within me 💚 Thank you for sharing!
The absolutely best sign of a great musician is having them play an acoustic solo... Just incredible! I love listening to the band but enjoy his the shows with just Dave and Tim even more so I can really hear Dave's guitar playing (and Tim too, of course) ❤️
Bloody hell...a legend in his own time. The way he strums and his rhythm is brilliant (I may be biased but the best I have seen and I feel somewhat underrated). I am so happy to see this album getting the credit it is due.
I've been a big fan of both of these guys my whole life, and Howard never really had much nice to say about Dave or his music on the air. Seeing them together like this, and Howard very genuinely enjoying it really brought a smile to my face.
This song and your voice reminds me one of the best times of my life. You’re pure magic, Dave. Thank you for gifting us with your unique talent and amazing voice! Much love always❣️💫
Thanks DMB for all the memories, always plays and sings from the heart. Being 37, I grew up on this kind of music and I'm always greatful considering what's out now. Keep it up Dave!
I can never hear anyone else sing this after you. This is the way I have always imagined this song should be played and they way it should be sung. 💗DM
Always ever creating, love Dave even when he has made a full studio album. He is ever creating, even in his live music there are songs created that were never released by recording means. I love this mans tenacity and love for his art. Not enough artist like him.
Amazing performance legendary / congratz for Howard for showcasing and interviewing amazing musicians and artists, Howard will go down as the finest celebrity interviewer of all time...needs a bigger plaque in the radio hall
When Dave's in Chicago, if you happen to be boating on a river, make sure you are under cover, or at very least, have an umbrella when your boat crosses under a bridge....Dave likes to unload the Deuce Juice out of the tour bus into the rivers....that's all for now.
Wow! Howard, you're spot-on with that 10! I've been a Procolholic for five decades, and it's great to see such talented and prominent people honour the song in this way.
Never thought I'd hear Dave on Howard. Really great to hear a long form interview with him. Great job to both of you. Dave seemed a little nervous at first but got calmer as it went on...Definitely need more frequent visits.

When I was young howard stern was just a movie with private parts I couldnt watch. Now I'm 32 married with kids and I just fucking love this man! Hes the best fucking radio guy there is. Period. Love coming and watchin him do a brief interview and then they play a song or 2. Dave Matthew's is wonderful man. People dont appreciate him enough. His music is beautiful. Just a great video man. I am filled with joy upon leaving this comment section. Truly.
Reminds me of the first time I heard him play to an audience- in C-Ville. He did a solo acoustic Watchtower, and we all held our breaths- knowing what was to come. And we were right. C'Mon Dave! Let's do a reunion of the original Pink Warehouse crew!! (you know you want to!!!)
Any players wondering about the tuning? I think I have it figured out. It's standard but, while his chords are fingered as in key of C, he's performing it in G. You can do this of course with a capo on fret 7, but as you can see, he isn't doing that. Instead, his strings are tuned up a 5th to BEADF#B. To do this without breaking strings or the guitar, I think he's using an A string in place of the low E tuned up a whole step to B. Same tactic for the rest. If you notice, what would normally be the D and G strings are unwound here. Not sure what he's using in place of the D string but you could probably get by with a G string there tuned up a whole step like the others. The G would then be a B string. Probably just using an extra light for the E. This allows him to play this song solo as if it were an octave lower than where it would be playing it in C with a capo on the 7th fret. Pretty clever but not practical if you're a gigging player.
Man, forget all the haters, Dave is an outstanding musician, regardless if you are into his style of music or not, you gotta respect the talent.
This was so beautiful. I consider myself extremely lucky that this band and Dave were a part of my youth in the 90's.
Absolutely breathtaking. His South African roots shine through every chord. The lyrics are addicting and memorable. His voice remains gorgeous after years and years in the industry. You cannot deny this talent.
Expert Excavating you cannot deny this comment. good stuff
Expert Excavating: Who would deny his talent ????
more like North American Jazz in his chords structures
The band that wrote this song is from England.
Amen!

Still how this song resonates within me 💚
Thank you for sharing!
Just a microphone, speaker and a simple guitar. #DMB Still the best ever. Age is no contest. It's wisdom.
The show has been great during the Pandemic but these studio performances are what I miss most
No body sings like Dave Matthews. That guy has his heart in every note. Emotion is at full blast. F**K he's so awesome.
Thank you for this gorgeous rendition of this song❤️
The dudes guitar playing is undermined. His all around ability is superb. Dave is the greatest! Very underrated in my eyes
The absolutely best sign of a great musician is having them play an acoustic solo... Just incredible! I love listening to the band but enjoy his the shows with just Dave and Tim even more so I can really hear Dave's guitar playing (and Tim too, of course) ❤️
Dave Matthews might be sitting, but I'm standing. Bravo! Bravo!
Captured the feeling of the song perfectly awesome
Lol Dave is the coolest. His kid like reaction at the end ❤️
Incredible. His voice is so beautiful and I have loved him forever. So wonderful to hear him solo on such a touching song. Thank you Howard.
I love dave not every song suits him but he finds a way
And when he does find a song , its magic
That melancholy guitar releases so many memories of another time and place
Love that he chose to do this song.
One my all time favorite songs, one of my all time favorite artists, nothing but beautiful 😔
Very special thank you - Johan Marais South Africa
Awww!! This is so sweet!! He's awesome.
Absolutely extraordinary!
Howard Stern needs to have Dave on again alot sooner than later.
Bloody hell...a legend in his own time. The way he strums and his rhythm is brilliant (I may be biased but the best I have seen and I feel somewhat underrated). I am so happy to see this album getting the credit it is due.

Can't wait to see Dave live this Friday in Chicago!

Beautiful... just like Dave. :)
Dave did a great job on his first appearance on the show and thanks for putting all the performances up for future enjoyment.
Dave Matthews Forever...All Hale the Singer SongWriter!
