Let me put it this way. If the rating on this film was one to ten stars, I give it ten stars. This was made only three years after WWII ended. I saw it when it first came out, full screen in a movie theatre. It was marvelous then as it is now. It has held up extremely well. The movie stars are all wonderful, and you can thank your luck stars you get to see it. I may not be the genius Mr. Belvedere is, but I know a good/great movie when I see one. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy.
Clifton Webb doesn't get many positive remarks but was one of my favorite's actors for the bio of Sousa, Great Band Leader who created such wonderful Marching tunes for the military, Mr. Belvedere was another movie as well the great mystery thriller "Laura" with the actress Gene Tierney.
Please also see, " Mr. Belvedere Goes To College". This film ( "Sitting Pretty" ) lets us enjoy the results of Mr. B. as " Know It All " , but he really does ! 😊👍 I liked the husband's reproach to his wife, when she'd just said Mr. B. " dances like a saint !" Hubby retorts, " I don't care if he dances like Saint Vitus Himself ! What about ME ?!" And the neighbours, recognising themselves in the novel, a best-seller, naturally ! 📖👍😊 🇬🇧😊👍📽️💙👍🇬🇧
@@homegown1234 And, toss in, "The Razor's Edge" with Tyrone Power, Gene Tierney, Herbert Marshall, John Payne and Anne Baxter. Anne Baxter won an Oscar for her performance. "The Razor's Edge" is one of the greatest stories ever told on film and is beautifully shot. The direction is perfect as is the music.
"Intoxication is a form of escape often sought by the mentally immature." Best line of many great ones in this movie. Clifton Webb must have loved playing that part.
What a film !!! What a masterpiece !!! Those reading comments first , to judge the film kindly be pateint and watch , enjoy and learn . Tributes to everyone contributing towards the film . ❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
Maureen O’Hara was magnificent in everything she was in! ❤. I have never watched a Mr. Belvedere movie until this one……now I’m going to look them all up.
Better than 98% of modern films. No CGI, no car chases or sex scenes to pad a poorly composed script. I just want a good story made by skilled artists. Out of dozens of these old films I haven't found one that didn't have a solid plotline.
This movie proves the point that a person can make something suspicious or devious with simply explained ordinary circumstances very funny entertaining really cute movie is there anything Mr belvedere doesn't know or know how to do!!!!!
Loved this film 👍💙😊 My mother was pleased to hear from me that she looked like Maureen O' Hara😊, 1950 to 1960 , approx. 😊 It was admittedly meant as a compliment, but Mr. Belvedere would have been proud of my pragmatism...😊 🇬🇧😊📽️👍🦉😊🇬🇧
It’s the fact that in the very first scene, the minute that guy spoke, I knew he was the caterpillar from Alice in wonderland and I looked it up and sure enough ❤😂
Many do. as long as you only wish without making it happen thouigh, it won't happen. You transform your wish into intention, will, plan and action! To your success!
You darn right Mom was a better cook! What can I say, I saw this movie when I was eight years old. Saturday afternoon. Maureen Ohara just enthralled me because my mother was Maureen Ohara all the way around. She wasn't an actress but could have been her stand-in without trouble. This movie should be re-done, but it scares me a bit to think how they might re-make it. Got a kick out of both (John Russell), (Clifton Webb). (Webb) imagine (Donald O'Conner) and (Russell) how he portrayed that certain look of (Clark Gable/Burt Renolds) expressions. lol The excellent abilities of the child actors as well during this period of movie making. Not to take away the child actors that followed, but still incomparable along the way into today's Hollywood. These "Classics" are worth it to me to keep my RUclips subscription. Thank you...
I could never exist in a home with that much clutter. Floral drapes, floral wallpaper, flouncy curtains, meaningless accessories on every flat surface. This is so remembered from my youth and the 1 o'clock movie on Channel 12. Lunch, then a movie all summer long. Me and Mom. KPTV 12 out of Portland. Oldest indepentent station west of the Rockies. Now a Fox affiliate but the most unbiased, comprehensive local news team we have, imo. A trusted source for news for a long, long time. Don't know if the 1o'clock movie anymore but it surely brought out a great love for the films of the 30s, 40s and 50s in me.
I played the youngest child in this movie..I don't recall much about it. However, it launched my acting career I specialized in commercials..as my wife said I was a pain in the ass I mostly did commercials for hemroaid creams.
I love this movie I did notice this house & especially the staircase is the same one used in the old movie Jackpot with Jimmy Steward & “forgot her name” Perry Masons secretary in his TV show. Guess Hollywood has used same sets for a lot of movies. Yep same set Same staircase 👍
29.10 Why does he specifically ask for "gluten bread " ? I dont remember Gluten being a significant issue before the 1980s. And here he is asking For it, not without it !
FYI - Chuck Lorre originally intended Johnny Galecki to play the role, but Galecki thought he would be "better suited" for the character of Leonard. Lorre said that when Jim Parsons auditioned for the role, he was "so startlingly good" that he was asked to re audition "to make sure he hadn't gotten lucky".
Okay... I will suggest a silly movie I really like, then you suggest a comedy gem you would watch again... "lust in the dust" with Divine! A classic in my book.... now you! : )
I stopped watching it when the snobbish Clifton Webb arrived saying he can't stand children and threw the flowers in the trash! Sorry, but not my kind of comedy!
A suburban couple solves its babysitting woes by hiring snooty genius Lynn Belvedere (Clifton Webb)...but being that it's the suburbs and that it's 1948, much gossip ensues. Slick, episodic family comedy was a huge hit in its day (and got Webb his third Oscar nod) but I'm not entirely feeling the love. Belvedere is not only a one-note character but, for me, remarkably unlikable, even if that's supposed to be the joke; his treatment of everybody in the sculpture scene alone is enough to make me want to dump the bowl of pablum from earlier in the movie on HIS head! Still, Webb would become a major star playing Belvedere or variations thereof all through the 50s, so what do I know? I do wonder, however, what happened to Henry, the huge family dog from the beginning of the movie. Did Belvedere have him sent to, uh, a nice big farm out in the country? Wouldn't surprise me! 6/10.
