I would like to know the thought process when someone is playing (shredding?) something like this. Would the guitar player be thinking of the notes and what he's doing in the moment, or is it all muscle memory and his fingers are moving without thinking about it?
For me I think it's mostly about licks. All the licks and tricks you've learned are in your "library". You can reproduce them without actually thinking about them up front. If you practice , practice and practice you will be able to combine these licks while improvising. The bigger your library is, the more you'll nail every vibe you want to produce!;-) So we have to study my friend, that's our lifetime punishment for loving the guitar. I think Guthrie Govan's haircut, is the example of not being able to see a hairdresser while he had to practice to become such a fine guitar player. Now his hair is long and his library is huge!;-)
