NL Interviews: Saeed Naqvi on 'Being The Other' in India

  • Veteran journalist Saeed Naqvi has seen it all, and he's got the stories to prove it. Naqvi, who began his career in 1964 as a reporter in The Statesman, has seen the media industry grow over the decades, absorbing threats and becoming diverse. In his new book, Being the Other: The Muslim in India, Naqvi trains his eye upon India's modern history and takes some well-aimed shots at people who were once his heroes, like Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
Being the Other is a book that is as angry as it is nostalgic. It's filled with anecdotes and stories that sometimes delight and often disturb. There are parts where Naqvi puts away his journalist hat - like when he puts in a story based on unsubstantiated rumours about Vijaylakshmi Pandit - but for most part, the book is a richly-told memoir in which Naqvi isn't afraid to call people like Nehru and Atal Bihari Vajpayee out.
While speaking to Newslaundry, Naqvi spoke about the Hindu-Muslim divide that has grown in the past few years, the Muslim identity of Delhi as a city, and Nehru's status of the undisputed leader for Indian Muslims in the early years of independence. He also talks about how the media has created a divide in the world by playing with perceptions and how there is a need to bring "the space back for liberal discourse."

In Bombay, I’ve been denied a rental at various points due to being a single male, having a dog, having a small child, eating meat, not being a Gujarati, not being a Catholic and so on. Looks like everyone is the ‘other’. Mr Naqvi should get over it and focus on his stellar career/ friendships rather than wallowing in self pity.

Have been a fan of Mr. Naqvi ever since I saw his interview with Steve Paikin many years ago. (edit: now I am a bit distrustful of him)
When Mr. Naqvi speaks about the growing Hindu-Muslim divide, shouldn't he primarily be addressing the inherently divisive nature of Islam, and the fact that globalization is exposing Muslims all over the world to "true" Islam and Quranic texts, which leads to Muslims abandoning their local cultures and traditions in favour of puritanical Islam.....which leads to increased tensions between the Deenis and the Kuffars?
The interview was a bit superficial. Many interesting topics were started but not pursued, and cross-questions were lacking. But maybe I should buy the book for more.

Such a flawed understanding of partition; perhaps deliberately self serving. Nehru and Congress were left no choice by Jinnah’s 14 points, the same Jinnah you folks gave 87% votes to in the 1946 elections.

Naqvi claims that in 300 years not a single Urdu couplet has been written which is against the pluralistic society and Deepanjana looks with awe. Well ignorance is bliss. Here is a couplet from the great Iqbal " Chin o Arab hamaara, Hindustan hamaara, Muslim hain hum, watan hain sara jahaan hamaara". Too much for the pluralistic society. Deepanjana, stop behaving like a cheerleader. I once heard you supporting Zakir Naiq on Hafta and now this. Its good be secular and we all should be. But ignoring the mistakes of someone just because he happens to come from a minority community is also communal.

Are you seriously comparing the Eifel tower, the prime specimen of the union of french industrialization and aesthetics and the Big Ben, a symbol of Britain's transition to democracy, to the Qutub minar, which was built by an invader to stamp his authority on the land of the people whom he mass slaughtered, raped and pillaged? A minar built with the beams and pillars of the temples razed by this invader?
The Eifel tower and the Big Ben are symbols of pride and indigenous achievement. The Qutub Minar is a symbol of defeat and slavery.

Massively disappointing and completely disingenuous narrative by Mr.Naqvi.
    1) Blames Nehru and Congress for creation of Pakistan when it's amply
clear that muslims of Bihar , UP, MP, Delhi and Bengal overwhelmingly
voted for Muslim league which was in favor of a Islamic state, it's a
different matter that once Pak was created a lot of them chose to stay
    back.
2)Says Muslims are not a homogeneous entity (no prizes for
guessing) however proceeds to do just that by saying that Muslims across
the world were outraged with operation desert storm ,to say that only muslims were outraged , I don't recall Indian HIndus rejoicing at what happened to Iraq they were equally appalled, Shia's from Iran however by best guesses must have rejoiced seeing Saddam in trouble, so to portray Muslims as one entity is far from truth.
    3) Says Muslims are used for tokenism and then does nothing to protest it instead takes the
first opportunity to tag along with IK GUjral to feed this tokenism.
    4) Says Out of the 3 countries Bangladesh has the best future, Bangladesh has and continues to kill Hindus with impunity, he says the fundamentalism is residue of Jamaat-e-islami, not sure those young boys who butchered people in the cafe belonged to Jamaat.
    5) Says Bangladesh had made real sacrifices as if Indian freedom fighters who fought the british were not authentic.
    6) sounds as if he is waiting for a Hindu rastra to be made out of India so that he has the satisfaction of saying "I told you so". There will be no HIndu rastra, there may be Brahmin Rastra which RSS and VHP so desperately want , trying hard to bring back brahminical imperialism. If Somebody thinks Pakistan is a Muslim state he is mistaken, it's aSunni imperialist state, Shia's ahmadis and sufi's are killed for fun.
    7) Mr. Naqvi says there is no debate that happens today since people don't gather in coffee shops, well those of patriarchal male gossiping with friends over multiple cups of tea and coffee are thankfully over, men of
today are helping out their wives in kitchen and kids with their homework, Mr. Naqvi seems to be completely oblivious to the debates that happen on the internet like the one we are having now.
Mr. Naqvi next time you are in the at coffee shop don't forget to smell the coffee.

I belong to a family which suffered the horrors of partition. My grandmother cried for her beloved Lahore till she breathed her last. I have always heard my elders say that Nehru and congress simply should not have accepted the partitioning of our land. So I feel there is truth in what he says.

What would happened had Congress not accepted Partition ? G.B.Pant favoured Partition as alternative would have been worse. Very loose federation, Muslim Communalism and League in almost States, Hardline Muslim Insurgency and blasts as currently experienced in Pakistan would have been rampant in India. India would have been troubled and economically distracted with the internal complexities and problem of Global Islamic Movement.

Indeed a very good interview. But we'll have to see that the kind of conversations that happen (The Ones' he's suggesting) are not hijacked by people of only one ideology or narrative. Like he rightly said, let the 100 flowers bloom (which btw he quoted Chairman Mao Zedong). The sham that followed the whole JNU episode in the name of "conversation" is the worst thing that can ever happen to what he's suggesting here.

You ignored sect, language, the difference between the landlord and the landless, the capitalist and the exploited and just fell for the canard of Islam in danger/ new Medina. No use crying over spilt milk now. The day Muslims start exercising their political agency as responsible individuals, they will be treated as individuals and not part of a monolith.
