Man rewatching it, this actually got off to a great start, and Bill gives him a few outs but eventually gets exhausted from the weird questions and goes in
Ethan was out of his depth here. Bill Burr got his start at the Comedy Cellar, a club that was the gathering place of some of the greatest roasters and downright villainous insult geniuses like Patrice O’Neal, Colin Quinn, Bob Kelly, etc. He stood his ground on Opie and Anthony all the time too, a radio show notorious for making their guests look like complete fools if weren’t witty or thickskinned. Ethan is a RUclipsr, from a community where roasting and insulting is done by videos where you can take all the time you want to construct your points and what you’ll say. Bill Burr can do this on the fly. Ethan just can’t, he hasn’t been around it for years like Burr. This wasn’t a good choice for a interview.
I can't fathom why everyone jumps on the 'hate Ethan' bad wagon when Bill Burr was nothing but a condescending prick in this interview. Bill Burr tends to do this in interviews, he memorises a bunch of roasts and always comes off as overly offended and unnecessarily hostile. I also can't comprehend why everyone thinks of Bill Burr as this comedic genius when his jokes are recycled and he is about as charismatic as a tin of baked beans. I don't think I've laughed at one of his jokes; yes comedy is subjective but it doesn't usually take much to make me laugh lol. I went to your channel to shit on your content but ended up finding it catchy. I would still like to state my point, however tired or inconsequential it may be, that none of us ever expected intellectual aptitude from the dude who coughed a lot obnoxiously and coined the term chub n tuck. We fell in love with ethan because he reminded us of ourselves, and as we all started to grow apart from ethan, economically and then emotionally, some of us made him a target for our own projections. That was embarrassing. Ethan just has a big ego. Can't stand that Bill is smarter and funnier than him in front of Hila. So he was way too controlling, interrupting, egotistical on this podcast. Any good host should make it about the guest at all times. Let them talk and make it about them. Not about the host. Ethan kept acting like he was on Bill's level all the time. Or that his comments mattered more when he is interviewing someone like Bill.

Watch any interview with Bill Burr and you'll find it isn't uncommon. That guy will tear you a new ass hole if you look at him sideways, he's a monster.
Ethan isn't a good interviewer, that's why. I can't blame him though, interviewing is something you acquire through experience. Hopefully he will learn from this. Bill is a pretty difficult guest as well, always looking for something to make fun of (which is why I like him). Not even Fallon, a "professional", can deal with him.
I'll tell you right now, no one can deal with him except his wife lol. The only reasons fallons and conans interviews are a complete disaster is because it's scripted.

This is one of the few older episodes I never watched. After hearing it be referenced for years, and again recently as being so brutal, I finally gave in. It’s really not that bad. Bill could’ve destroyed Ethan, but instead gave some light ribbing. Ethan was nervous and said dumb things, asked stupid questions and Bill briefly called him out then moved on. He just remembers it being worse than it was because he wasn’t expecting any call outs at all for some reason. Which he should have.
Yea finally watched it as well and it’s not remotely that bad. Just goes to show Ethan’s state of mind at the time and how depression can make the smallest things seem like a big deal.

This really isn't as bad as the comments make it out to be. There are a few awkward moments and the overall chemistry isn't quite there but its definitely not the train wreck I thought it would be

I still liked the interaction because it shows the two being humans. Ethan gets embarrassed, Bill picks up on it, and makes jokes lol. No one is perfect.
Honestly I love ethan, but as a host he's not that good he asks mundane questions and isn't natural. Same thing with Tim Heidecker I was too excited for it and it was not at all good even Tim was surprised at the end. Ethan has sadly changed a lot. The only spot that was really bad was when Bill brought up the fact he had like a zillion siblings, and when Ethan asked him how many? Bill Burrs reaction to that question was completely un-called for and just a massive overreaction and he really should have fucking apologized for ripping so fucking hard and aggressively into Ethan. Ethan wasn't doing anything bad or pressing to hard about it he literally just followed the flow of the conversation and Bill lost his mind for whatever reason at Ethan. I'd spill something or trip and go into a full rage that I couldn't calm down from, and the slightest things would tip me off into a depression spiral or a fit of rage Not to say that's an appropriate reaction at all; I realized I was sick and needed treatment because one day I fell into one of those rages and realized, I was acting absolutely pathetic and that it wasn't right of me, once i got healthy I stopped acting like a buffoon
This video speaks to Bill Burr’s character because he knew Ethan was a big fan; he gave him many chances and handouts it’s ridiculous, yet hard not to get frustrated.
What happened here is a perfect example of Bill being good at what he does. He at first left a lot of openings for Ethan to control the interview and guide it, but when Bill started feeling that Ethan was unsure of what he was doing, then Bill just took over to help it along, which sadly Ethan didn't know how to recover from, so you see him struggling to keep up with a Bill that's essentially doing his job for him of making it interesting.

I feel like 80% of the dialogue was from bill and due to ethan's anxiety and insecurity, he felt he had to even it out and take every opportunity to put in his piece. It wasn't handled well but understandable.
@Frank Hobbs Have you watched the Joe Rogan & Neil deGrasse Tyson podcast, it's probably even closer to 90% on here. It's a blessing to have someone on who can just talk so freely for so long, If you listen well enough all you have to do is ask more questions to elaborate bits of the story etc. It's still early days for him, but I hope he continues to improve and not get comfortable because it wasn't to watch.
I saw this episode being referenced in a newer episode and Ethan and Dan talking about how brutal it was but honestly I don’t think it was that bad! Ethan’s definitely much better at interviewing people now but I also don’t think Bill had a horrible time. Truly not as bad as I thought it would be
Same, it's probably because of what it was being compared too. It lasted no time and sure Ethan stuck on it a bit, but showed Burr knew how to stick to his boundaries and get Ethan to back off in the end.

I thought it's been pretty obvious Ethan's on the spectrum. You can tell by his eye contact with guests and peculiar hand movements, I like to call it "aspie hands". It's not the same as regular hand gesturing while talking, in aspie hands they move their hands and fingers while speaking in an almost uncoordinated fashion like awkwardly moving fingers while they express themselves with hand gestures, etc. It's not a bad thing, just a common occurrence I've noticed that people on the spectrum share. Philip DeFranco does this a lot.
While hard to watch, this episode should really be an important crossroads for Ethan - he needs to decide whether to change his casual and overly - personal podcast style if he wants to keep interviewing these big stars, who, unlike fellow youtuber guests, don't know the first thing about him. I feel it all comes down to whether or not he wants to funnel all his energy into making the show suitable for huge celebrities or continue shooting the shit with friends and fellow youtubers. If he comforms his style to be more fitting for celebritiy interviews then I won't be watching anymore because then the soul of H3 would be lost and it will be just another lame celebrity talk show where it's all about kissing up to the guest and promoting their shit show.

He never said he hated reaction videos, he was way more specific. He was pointing out the insane high energy idiots that record a video for each and EVERY viral video there is, and that adds nothing to the video. H3H3 always added something wheter it came in the form of pure comedy, or even adding a well made opinion on something to make the viewer potentially look at the video a different way.

I love Bill Burr, and I like this podcast, but for the love of god Ethan PLEASE stop interrupting your guests. It's so jarring to listen to. Just let them finish what they're trying to say before interrupting them mid sentence for clarification on something that probably would have been made clear later on.
Ethan's used to shyer guests that need more help getting a conversation going, but Bill Burr is a stand-up comedian and thrives on the attention. Watch any interview with him and you rarely see the host talking, just laughing at Bill ranting. This is great news for Ethan, it means he doesn't have to constantly think about things to talk about. Of course his anxiety clouded his judgement but I think it's good to know
No i mean he does a terrible job. He becomes uncomfortable when the conversation gets interesting and then asks the most banal fucking sterile questions to regain control of the conversation. But he does get incredible guests Ill give him that
I'm well aware of the type of person Bill is, but that's irrelevant. Ethan does this to every guest he has on and it's so irritating and degrades the quality of the podcast. I'm giving him constructive criticism that he could use to make it better for a lot of people as I'm definitely not the only person with this complaint.
I’ve watched most of the podcasts, this was one of the few that I hadn’t seen. After watching the birthday roast and hearing it brought up many times over the years, I decided to finally watch it. And I gotta say it really wasn’t that bad. The way everyone talks, I thought Bill must have absolutely decimated Ethan for an hour straight. But that’s not the case at all. Bill gave Ethan a little shit, Ethan was obviously uncomfortable a few times, and that’s about it. Not the cringe-fest verbal beat down that it’s always made out to be. I’m just sayin’! 🤷🏻♀️
I think its a generational divide. Bill always gives people shit and that’s really common in his generation while people mine and Ethan’s age and below are more prone to take that shit seriously/personally. I hope it evens out one day but yeah, it really was not bad and honestly good a lot of the time.

Hila needs to interject more. She has a natural way of disarming people. Ethan just needs to let go of the reigns a little bit and let her interject once in a while. At around 56 minutes she jumps in and totally saves an awkward situation.
Hila was on her A+ game. She was composed, observant, & quick to take charge whenever she noticed Ethan was on the ropes struggling (which seemed like it was back to back). She came in with assist. True MVP.

What's the definition of a real comedian? Someone who can stand on a stage? Even someone who does only 1 show with 20 ppl a week? Ethan can be really funny and provide unique creative content, hence why he's such a huge comedic/commentary channel. He has brung entertainment to millions of ppl for a very long time, and even tho he's not doing well recently, doesnt mean he doesnt deserve appreciation.

I don’t understand why the whole number of siblings question Ethan asked of Bill, why Bill not only gets bent out of shape over it, but also criticizes Ethan for saying he was genuinely surprised that that particular question was “off limits”. Bill talks freely about his wife and child in every podcast he’s on and in his standup, yet Ethan is supposed to know not to ask Bill about the number of siblings he has? Chris Rock not only talks about the number of siblings he has as part of his standup, he goes into detail about them individually. Bill has been interviewed enough times that he should be smart enough to know the difference between an interviewer who is being a jerk trying to ask him an intentionally rude, invasive, or “gotcha” question, versus an interviewer who asks him a question from a standpoint of naïveté and genuinely not knowing that a particular question or topic is going to upset Bill for whatever weird reason. Ethan may have his issues and shortcomings, but the awkwardness of this interview (to the degree that it WAS awkward), rests entirely on Bill’s shoulders, not Ethan’s. And I’m a fan of Bill’s, but sometimes in these podcasts he suddenly (without warning), becomes annoyed with other panelists (or the host himself) at random times over random things causing that person to question their own podcasting etiquette and feeling bad about how the interview with Bill went.
He isn't expected to know. But he is supposed to respect bill and drop it once its made known. Ethan being socially autistic just doesn't seem to grasp boundaries. Bill talks about his family because that's his realm. As for his siblings, they are their own people with their own lives, he doesn't want his stardom to negatively impact any of his distant relatives. If they want it to be know they are his siblings they will. He's mature enough to allow his loved ones to have that choice. Many many people including celebrities highly value privacy and some things once they are out there can never be taken back. Bill gave Ethan so many outs where if it had been anyone else he would have immediately ripped them apart, but Ethan clearly demonstrated autistic levels of social skills here pretty sad honestly

I totally agree with Bill on this, Ethan always pauses the video way too often and describe what we can see in the video, like someone holding a red ball in his hand *Pauses* "here you can see the guy holding a red ball in his left hand" NO SHIT, we can see that. What Ethan used to do on his reaction videos was actually entertaining and funny, now even Hila gets annoyed by how much Ethan pauses the video and describes what's obviously happening without adding anything to it.

I know that when I meet someone I have a celebrity crush on, I always interrupt them, and definitely bring up their children getting hurt. Nothing bad can happen when you follow these guidelines.

Nah this interview is exactly the difference in experience. Burr is a master at controlling and being funny in a conversation because of a lifetime of improving on it. Ethan hasnt had nearly as much time/practice even talent.
This one? Dont think ive ever watched one of these and thought the interview was well done, the questions are so awful that i actually hope ethan just comes up with them on the fly. Aside from ethans complete lack of comedic timing and charisma the interviews just seem poorly planned/researched and low effort.
Nah Ethan is socially awkward here. He is in trying for rapport mode the whole time instead of his usual neutral or breaking rapport and you can tell he was sticking to his script like Burr hated watching those videos. You can tell he was really nervous leading up top this one and you can hardly blame him. Bill Burr is a legend.

I was one of those people saying this episode was awkward af back when it came out because I think compared to all other episodes where Ethan is never challenged *it is* but this episode is not as bad as I and most people made it out to be. Bill was soft with him all things considered. We made it out to be a much bigger deal then it actually was.

I can't fathom why everyone jumps on the 'hate Ethan' bad wagon when Bill Burr was nothing but a condescending prick in this interview. Bill Burr tends to do this in interviews, he memorises a bunch of roasts and always comes off as overly offended and unnecessarily hostile. I also can't comprehend why everyone thinks of Bill Burr as this comedic genius when his jokes are recycled and he is about as charismatic as a tin of baked beans. I don't think I've laughed at one of his jokes; yes comedy is subjective but it doesn't usually take much to make me laugh lol. I would still like to state my point, however tired or inconsequential it may be, that none of us ever expected intellectual aptitude from the dude who coughed a lot obnoxiously and coined the term chub n tuck. We fell in love with ethan because he reminded us of ourselves, and as we all started to grow apart from ethan, economically and then emotionally, some of us made him a target for our own projections. This is one of the few older episodes I never watched. After hearing it be referenced for years, and again recently as being so brutal, I finally gave in. It’s really not that bad. Bill could’ve destroyed Ethan, but instead gave some light ribbing. Ethan was nervous and said dumb things, asked stupid questions and Bill briefly called him out then moved on. He just remembers it being worse than it was because he wasn’t expecting any call outs at all for some reason. Which he should have.

The only spot that was really bad was when Bill brought up the fact he had like a zillion siblings, and when Ethan asked him how many? Bill Burrs reaction to that question was completely un-called for and just a massive overreaction and he really should have fucking apologized for ripping so fucking hard and aggressively into Ethan. Ethan wasn't doing anything bad or pressing to hard about it he literally just followed the flow of the conversation and Bill lost his mind for whatever reason at Ethan. Idk if Bill was just dealing with something hard that day or whatever or if he's had something SUPER serious happen when talking about his siblings so it's just a sore subject. But Ethan couldn't have known that, he's not a reporter and doesn't claim to be. He's just a normal goofy guy interviewing interesting people in a casual relatable manner. Bill should have apologized to Ethan directly after that though. His reaction was very disappointing and way to fucking escalated It's hard to not lose some respect for him. What happened here is a perfect example of Bill being good at what he does. He at first left a lot of openings for Ethan to control the interview and guide it, but when Bill started feeling that Ethan was unsure of what he was doing, then Bill just took over to help it along, which sadly Ethan didn't know how to recover from, so you see him struggling to keep up with a Bill that's essentially doing his job for him of making it interesting.

I feel like 80% of the dialogue was from bill and due to ethan's anxiety and insecurity, he felt he had to even it out and take every opportunity to put in his piece. It wasn't handled well but understandable.
@Frank Hobbs Have you watched the Joe Rogan & Neil deGrasse Tyson podcast, it's probably even closer to 90% on here. It's a blessing to have someone on who can just talk so freely for so long, If you listen well enough all you have to do is ask more questions to elaborate bits of the story etc. It's still early days for him, but I hope he continues to improve and not get comfortable because it wasn't to watch.

I thought it's been pretty obvious Ethan's on the spectrum. You can tell by his eye contact with guests and peculiar hand movements, I like to call it "aspie hands". It's not the same as regular hand gesturing while talking, in aspie hands they move their hands and fingers while speaking in an almost uncoordinated fashion like awkwardly moving fingers while they express themselves with hand gestures, etc. It's not a bad thing, just a common occurrence I've noticed that people on the spectrum share.

While hard to watch, this episode should really be an important crossroads for Ethan - he needs to decide whether to change his casual and overly - personal podcast style if he wants to keep interviewing these big stars, who, unlike fellow youtuber guests, don't know the first thing about him. I feel it all comes down to whether or not he wants to funnel all his energy into making the show suitable for huge celebrities or continue shooting the shit with friends and fellow youtubers.

I love Bill Burr, and I like this podcast, but for the love of god Ethan PLEASE stop interrupting your guests. It's so jarring to listen to. Just let them finish what they're trying to say before interrupting them mid sentence for clarification on something that probably would have been made clear later on.
Ethan's used to shyer guests that need more help getting a conversation going, but Bill Burr is a stand-up comedian and thrives on the attention. Watch any interview with him and you rarely see the host talking, just laughing at Bill ranting. This is great news for Ethan, it means he doesn't have to constantly think about things to talk about. Of course his anxiety clouded his judgement but I think it's good to know

I’ve watched most of the podcasts, this was one of the few that I hadn’t seen. After watching the birthday roast and hearing it brought up many times over the years, I decided to finally watch it. I think its a generational divide. I don’t understand why the whole number of siblings question Ethan asked of Bill, why Bill not only gets bent out of shape over it, but also criticizes Ethan for saying he was genuinely surprised that that particular question was “off limits”. Bill talks freely about his wife and child in every podcast he’s on and in his standup, yet Ethan is supposed to know not to ask Bill about the number of siblings he has? Chris Rock not only talks about the number of siblings he has as part of his standup, he goes into detail about them individually. Bill has been interviewed enough times that he should be smart enough to know the difference between an interviewer who is being a jerk trying to ask him an intentionally rude, invasive, or “gotcha” question, versus an interviewer who asks him a question from a standpoint of naïveté and genuinely not knowing that a particular question or topic is going to upset Bill for whatever weird reason. Ethan may have his issues and shortcomings, but the awkwardness of this interview (to the degree that it WAS awkward), rests entirely on Bill’s shoulders, not Ethan’s.
And I’m a fan of Bill’s, but sometimes in these podcasts he suddenly (without warning), becomes annoyed with other panelists (or the host himself) at random times over random things causing that person to question their own podcasting etiquette and feeling bad about how the interview with Bill went.

Bill talks about his family because that's his realm. As for his siblings, they are their own people with their own lives, he doesn't want his stardom to negatively impact any of his distant relatives. If they want it to be know they are his siblings they will. He's mature enough to allow his loved ones to have that choice. Many many people including celebrities highly value privacy and some things once they are out there can never be taken back. Bill gave Ethan so many outs where if it had been anyone else he would have immediately ripped them apart, but Ethan clearly demonstrated autistic levels of social skills here pretty sad honestly

I feel like Bill Burr is such a powerhouse compared to h3h3 when it comes to social commentary, honestly felt like ethan was way out of his league on this one.
More often than not Bill dominates the interview. I dont even put this on Ethan being socially awkard, I'd put this on Bill being a powerhouse.
Nah this interview is exactly the difference in experience. Burr is a master at controlling and being funny in a conversation because of a lifetime of improving on it. Ethan hasnt had nearly as much time/practice even talent.
This one? Dont think ive ever watched one of these and thought the interview was well done, the questions are so awful that i actually hope ethan just comes up with them on the fly. Aside from ethans complete lack of comedic timing and charisma the interviews just seem poorly planned/researched and low effort.
Nah Ethan is socially awkward here. He is in trying for rapport mode the whole time instead of his usual neutral or breaking rapport and you can tell he was sticking to his script like Burr hated watching those videos. You can tell he was really nervous leading up top this one and you can hardly blame him. Bill Burr is a legend.

I was one of those people saying this episode was awkward af back when it came out because I think compared to all other episodes where Ethan is never challenged *it is* but this episode is not as bad as I and most people made it out to be. Bill was soft with him all things considered. We made it out to be a much bigger deal then it actually was.
