    My county and surrounding counties are riddled with breeders and we’ve seen many puppies be surrendered to shelter by the breeders themselves. Now, one of my dogs was bought by a breeder when I was in elementary school and she’s a wonderful dog. So were the other breeder dogs we had previously. However, I love my shelter dogs just as much, they are just as good as dogs as any pedigree dog. One of the dogs we got from the shelter is a purebred, she is also poorly bred. I think the breeder was trying to breed a “micro” GSD. I used to be of the opinion that there are some ethical breeders but then I started working in vet med and volunteering with shelters and I’ve noticed how big of an issue overcrowding and overbreeding is. I’m lucky enough to be surrounded by no-kill shelters, in fact many of the rescues will drive to kill shelters and bring back the dogs in line for euthanasia since we have a huge community of fosters. But all of them are still always at capacity. Too many people have become breeders to make a quick buck and many people refuse to spay/neuter their dogs and we now have an overpopulation of dogs and not enough shelters, homes, or volunteers. Not only that, but many of these puppies are born with genetic risks or straight up deformities (looking at brachycephalic breeds, the poor dogs) and need special care that can’t be afforded by the shelter and these dogs are euthanized before they even get a chance to live. I’m of the personal belief that if you want a certain breed of dog, look into dedicated rescues for that breed, I guarantee there is one out there. Look into mixes with that breed in it, you’d be surprised at how many there are in your local shelters. And don’t even get me started on cat breeding. I love Maine coons, they’re very cool cats. But after having kittens abandoned in 103° heat during kitten season at my current clinic, and having my brain chemistry changed by seeing and taking care of inbred ragdoll kittens that didn’t survive past a day (and other details that I will not mention here because I understand some people, especially kids may not want the gruesome details), I just can’t imagine paying for more cats to be brought into this world. Again, while rarer, if you want a purebred cat, wait for one to come into the shelter. Or just get a shelter cat, there’s a good chance they probably have that breed in them. My brother got a ragdoll mix on accident because he just liked her, my cat has a lot of Maine coon in him despite his shorter hair (it is very thick though). I know that there’s very desirable traits in both cat and dog breeds, but we are in a crisis and we shouldn’t encourage breeders by buying from them. I applaud you, Stacy, for using your platform to talk about it. I could rant about this all day, especially brachycephalic breeds, kittens/kitten season, and the deformities that me and others in the vet med community have seen. Thankfully, I do think I’ve convinced my mom to only get shelter dogs from now on.
    On a lighter note, I’m very excited to finish the video (because I wrote this halfway through your rant) throughout the week, it’ll be a welcome distraction from finals (wish me luck!)
    Edit: just got to your comment about doodle breeders. I think you’ve cemented your place as my favorite RUclipsr.

      This is very informative and considerate! Thank you for taking your time to type this.
      Stacy’s words encouraged me to consider things like this for if I adopt a new dog and made me glad my dog I previously had was a rescue from a shelter, but this really convinced me: the breeding thing isn’t worth it anymore, right now.
      I’ve thought about how greedy and cruel it is that people breed dogs that have genetic disorders and cause dogs to pack shelters that euthanize, even before Stacy’s words and your words. Both of you kind of sealed the deal for me about whether or not I’ll ignore it: no.
      Edit: I plan to continue to do research on the best ways to rescue dogs, for them and humanity. I’m more alert about issues of how they’re treated, but I’m not one to 100% take a side on an issue. I believe there’s always a higher cause and a place for everything, so I’m not 100% mutts-only or 100% for breeding.

    I adopted a cat 2 weeks ago. I went to a shelter and asked which cat has been here the longest and has the lowest chance of getting adopted (terrible, but accurate) and they showed me a cat and said “this is a really sweet girl who’s owner passed and no one shows any interest in her because she doesn’t seem very cuddly or friendly.” She just slept all day long. Well I took her home that day and she has been the SWEETEST. She loves to play and snuggle and is so well behaved. But no one wanted her because at first glance she didn’t “look friendly”. She has been the best addition to my home.

    This series feels like when your favorite childhood show/movie/book gets a more mature adaptation, and somehow (the word “somehow” being less applicable here) it ends up being better/more fun. Longer episodes designed to pick up your high school/college week, what feels like more references to college and adult life, talking about more personal “life in general” stuff, heck even a Chappell Roan shoutout and Stacy not being afraid to share her (controversial) beliefs with her older audience. Loving it!!!

    Hey Stacy! I’ve been watching your videos since the beginning of Dog Craft and I love your message of “go rescue a dog”. I also agree with you that people should adopt from rescues rather than breeders, HOWEVER, I do believe there are ‘good’ breeders out there and that it is important for there to be breed standards. A lot of people require dogs for certain tasks such military, farm work, service animals, etc. These jobs require a dog with certain temperament, size, energy level, etc that you just can’t predict in a dog or esp puppy rescued from a shelter. Also people looking for a first-time dog with no previous experience could have a very difficult time getting a rescue from a shelter because they might end up with a high energy dog with Belgian malinois, border collie, etc. lineage that they can’t work with who just ends up back in the shelter or worse, neglected. This can further extend to older people, people in small households or apartments, in cities, or with high-demanding jobs who simply wouldn’t be able to properly care for a dog such as that. People with small children, other animals, etc, would need to make sure not to get a dog with high reactivity or super high prey drive as well, which is another reason why breed distinctions are so important since child-injury is a large leading cause to innocent dogs being put down. I’m not saying that no one should adopt from shelters, I believe that if you can, absolutely do, but I do think breeders are important as well. There definitely needs to be more standardization, legislation and guidelines regarding who can breed and sell dogs however as the number of “backyard breeders” is disgusting and so disheartening. I think it really comes down to people who are looking to get a dog need to do adequate research and really make sure they are prepared for the dog they are/may be getting, and not just get a dog based off looks as so many do. I’ve also heard horror stories of people living in the same household with opposite-gendered in-tact dogs having “accident” puppies which is something that should NEVER happen. People with in-tact animals HAVE to be more responsible and NEVER leave their pets to mingle freely without supervision. I apologize for the rant, and I could quite honestly go on forever about these different topics, but essentially:
    Tldr: breeders are sometimes necessary, breed standardization and destruction is important- people need to be more educated and prepared before getting a canine companion

    As other people have said, the sniffers find seeds to grow ancient flowers! They're bigger than you think and want a good amount of space to roam (I don't think they can dig on the last 20 blocks they dug on) and can dig on anything dirt related except mycelium. The flowers are only decorative, but they're beautiful.

    Hi stace! I agree with you for the most part on dog breeding, but i wanted to bring up that ethical breeders make sure their dogs dont go to shelters. their pups are pre-microchipped with the breeders info, so if the pup is ever sent to a shelter, the breeder will be contacted. the owners are contractually obligated to return the puppy, and a dedicated breeder can and will sue if you dont stick to the contract. Owners are carefully picked out, so the pups go to great homes with dedicated owners. I know its really easy to go the adopt dont shop route, but ethical breeding/ownership and protective legislation are what will actually solve the problem. Additionally, good breeders health test their dogs, and work hard to produce dogs free of genetic health and temperament issues. And i think the dogs of the future deserve that, to be given the best chance at a happy and healthy life, to have a dedicated breeder who sets them up for success and picks out the perfect owner. (ethical breeders dont make money off their dogs btw, they're actually lucky to break even. they do it out of passion and love for their dogs) I live where there are many stray dogs, and i volunteer at a local shelter. Both my dogs are rescues and both of them have genetic health and temperament issues due to poor breeding. But yea ill fight a doodle breeder, and i wouldnt mind if all breeding, even ethical breeding, was banned for a year or two so we could sort out the shelters. love u stace!

      all purposeful dog breeding should be banned, regardless of “wanting a specific dog” for aesthetic purposes. the overcrowding is RIDICULOUS and if you truly volunteer in shelters you would know how horrible it truly is to breed dogs for no other purpose than wanting to. BTW, anyone who is selling puppies (regardless of profit) isn’t doing it with pure intentions.

    I know I'm 3 months late, but here's my stance on breeders: I love ethical, responsible, and reputable breeders.
    If all breeding of dogs stopped, there would simply be no more dogs. However, if only ERR breeders kept breeding, there would be little need for shelters.
    ERR breeders will always health and temperament test, depending on the breeder one goes to, the dogs temperament would better suit different jobs (companion, working, SD, ect). They will also have a legally binding contract regarding giving up the dog and breeding the dog you get from them. You may not surrender these dogs to a shelter and may not rehome the dog. If a situation comes where one can no longer take care of the dog the breeder will take the dog back or help you rehome the dog.
    Also some people need a specific dog with a specific temperament for a specific reason and they would have a higher chance of success if that dog came from and ERR breeder.
    I, personally, do not support any breeding of mixed breeds whether it be PBMs or "doodles" of any kind. I feel that no mix can out perform a well bred pure bred no matter if it's in sports, a working environment, or service work.
    ERR breeders actually make little to no money from selling their puppies unlike BYB breeds who make hundreds if not thousands of dollars each litter. I've heard one breeder mention that they did make a profit of of one litter...$0.07, that's it.
    Now, I'm 50/50 when it comes to euthanizing in shelters. I know I sound terrible hear me out. The dogs may LOOK healthy but are they mentally sound? Imagine being in a room for 20 hours a day on your own for months, you wouldn't be mentally healthy. Those dogs are covered in scars even if you can't see them and it's best if they are put out of their misery. Same if a dog was run over and no matter what was done to fix it they would still be in tons of pain and would be better to just end it then.
    I know for a fact that there are shelters that absolutely do euthanize dogs even if they are perfectly fine inside and out. Those are terrible shelters and they should lose there funding altogether

    • @supertaco1375
      @supertaco1375 Месяц назад +2

      ERR breeders also only have a few litters a year. A ERR GSD breeder I know only produced 1 puppy in in 3 years. A few other ERR breeders I know only have 2 litters a year. Pretty much all BYB breeders I've seen will have several litters on the ground at once and be breeding multiple "breeds" at once while ERR breeders specialize in only one or two breeds never crossing them

    • @supertaco1375
      @supertaco1375 Месяц назад +2

      And not everyone can handle a rescue. Like you said you'd have to get a young puppy in order to have it not chase your cats. Those who are looking to get a rescue need to be mentally and financially prepared for anything.
      Was the dog abused before? What are it's triggers? It's could even be something specific that you won't find out until later. Maybe they were abused by a woman in a hat and may become afraid around women and/or hats.
      What if the dog has a genetic issue that isn't currently showing it? You need to have the money to pay for the surgeries/meds/or special food.

I wanted to say you are completely valid in your position and I do agree that for companion animals, both cats, dogs, rabbits and the like, should prioritize adoption/rescue over breeding. Culling is not nessasary or okay in any sense of the word.
    But... im playing a little devil's advocate here... I think i know why *some ppl* get so defensive over breeding dogs (and by extension other animals)
    Unfortunately, ppl are out there have specific requirements for an animal they want costumized. Some are shallow and surface level, others center around temperment, others are breed to be allergy freindly, them of course you have working dog breeds. Herding dogs, police/military dogs, search and rescue dogs, and most importantly, service dogs (at least as far as I know) all are bred. A lot of said animals bred tend to not even meet the requirements for the jobs they are 'created' to fulfill, especially service animals (they go through a lot of training first ofc).
    I don't think we can stop breeding, unfortunately, but we should be responsible and always look to shelters, fosters and rescues as our first options always. There is a chance you'll find your dream dog, cat, rabbit, chinchilla... whatever, really! I'm not encouraging breeding, there are so many animals who deserve good homes, but we also have to acknowledge that for some who have service animals or allergies, it might be their only option (not to say rescues cannot mske amazing service animals, but as far as I know, may need to do more research, most legit service animals are bred and trained for that specific job, like seeing eye dogs, cardiac alert dogs, ect)

      Appreciate your perspective. And I definitely understand the need to breed service dogs, military/police dogs. I think that is wonderful and I should have clarified more that breeding those types of dogs should absolutely continue.

      You obv know ppl go to extremes in arguments and debates when we are passionate

      To add onto this ethical breeders aren't adding to the problem. An ethical breeder will always do everything in their power to have the puppy returned to them in the event the buyer can't keep the pup. Most puppies now a days don't leave their breeders without a microchip registered to the breeder. If they don't the breed community's are kinda scary good at finding them and getting them placed back appropriately as well. Each breed also has specific heath testing to ensure they are breeding the most healthy dogs possible. A bunch goes into ethical breeding but those are the biggens to me. Of course they aren't very many in comparison which is a huge problem.
      Bravo to everyone that takes a chance on a rescue dog. Not saying we shouldn't rescue when we are able to to be clear.

    I feel like this is a good discussion to have and I'm hoping everyone can remain civil about it despite differing opinions: there are good, ethical breeders. I, personally, have no plans to ever get a dog from a shelter because the things I plan to do with dogs require specific, purpose-bred skills and breed traits, and I do not have the time or mental space to work with the variety of issues a shelter dog could have from that environment and their upbringing. I have also personally seen the effects of bad, backyard breeding with the dogs my parents have gotten growing up, and I have also seen the STARK difference in a well-bred purebred and a poorly bred purebred. Ethical breeders do not EVER let their dogs be put in the shelter system, you would have signed a contract for that with them that if for any reason you cannot keep the dog, they are returned to the breeder. And, IF a dog of theirs ever ends up in a shelter, for whatever reason, they WILL do everything they can to make sure that dog is out of the shelter as fast as possible and not taking up a space for a dog that needs it more. Ethical breeders also hardly, if ever, actually make a profit on their dogs -- all of the money goes back into supporting their dogs and they are not raking in money or making a huge profit. Yes, there is an overpopulation issue in the shelter system, but it is and never has been due to ethical breeders that health test, temperament test, and prove their dogs in the show ring or field trials. I believe this should be a matter of education, especially for new dog owners, and then letting people decide what is best for them. In my opinion, a shelter dog is not always the best for new, first-time dog owners, but it is not impossible and I applaud anyone who does take on that responsibility because it is not easy. But I also believe it is perfectly fine to not want that risk and want to have expectations and support systems with a well-bred purebred dog (key word being well-bred). Encouraging people and educating on what a well-bred dog actually is, and how to find an ethical breeder, rather than people going to BYB or whatever is going on with doodles (don't even get me started on that) will in return help with the shelter crisis because the profit BYB and others had will go down. Support for shelter systems AND ethical breeders can coexist, and providing accessible education as to what that entails for both options and why BYB and for-profit breeders need to be avoided is the best response, in my opinion. Both looking for a specific rescue (like Stacy is) and being on a waitlist for a well-bred dog take an extreme amount of time, because ethical breeders also will not just be pumping out puppies like a puppy mill (also don't get me started on those). I'm not trying to argue, simply offering information and open to (healthy) discussion here!

    Stacy, I totally respect your opinion but there really is a way to breed dogs responsibly and ethically. Saying otherwise is honestly detramental to shelters and dog soceity as a whole. I strongly believe people should get their dogs the way that fits their needs and lifestyle, which means adopting OR purchasing from ethical and responsible breeders which DO exsist. I say this with as much respect to you and your opinion as possible. I just dont want people to be confused as to what is wrong or right in getting a dog. I am totally open to any and all questions people have. This is something I strongly believe in myself.

It's wild to me that I've been saying "go rescue a dog" for ten years and there are people still saying, "Or buy one from a responsible breeder!" ..... no. How sad that some people want to purchase a dog when they could instead help a dog in need.

      @@stacyplays I believe this has been a misconmmunication. I was merely saying that either way you going about it, there is a way to do both responsibly. If people believe the opposite, then it will lead them to go to the bad breeders. The reality is that its really all of the bad owners refusing to spay/neuter and all the backyard breeders who are WAY different from ethical breeders that are keeping the shelters as full as they are. I do not wish to step on your toes though and really do respect your outlook as well. Please do not take this as an attack becuase id never do that to you. So far, all 3 my dogs I have had so far have been rescues. I am only now getting a dog from a breeder who I have very high standards for and MUST check all the boxes or they are no good.

    a ethical breeder would not let their dog go to a shelter. the reason there’s so many dogs in shelters is because people keep unethically breeding dogs just for the money, they give them to anyone who wants one wich means most likely they are not educated on the breed and cant handle them therefore get sent to a shelter.

    Living in a small farm town in California (weird I know) there’s so much back door breeding and just pet dumping it’s just crazy to think how people can do that to sentient beings. I wish there was more help out here for them. People need to spay and neuter pets if they don’t want to or can’t care for more animals. Shelters have free or reduced access to that but people don’t take the time or knowledge before owning an animal

      Not weird at all! I visited a shelter in Bakersfield once and saw first hand someone dropping off a box of puppies. :( I would have LOVED to have seen what a puppy from Page, Polly, or Molly looked like, but having them spayed was the responsible thing to do. Being a responsible citizen is not always fun -- that's what a lot of people don't want to accept about dog breeding.

    Hey Stacy! While I see your point about breeders and more people adopting I have to say every dog breed matters and has the right to live on this earth forever. It’s not the dog breeds fault about mutts being in shelters in fact there are some purebreds that end up in shelters as well and it’s sad that any animal has gone extinct it’s a terrible thing but that also doesn’t mean dog breeds should go extinct as well. For example chihuahuas are a very important part of Mexico culture and are special to many people so it does matter that breed stays alive and that goes for every dog breed on the planet. People have special connections to certain dogs and that’s a special thing and it would be terrible for a dog breed that people love so much to be gone so while adopting is important and a thing everyone should consider it’s not like other dogs could just go away they have a right to live with us a well.

    • @stacyplays
      @stacyplays  5 месяцев назад

      This is why I put what I put on screen. I am Mexican. I get it. That was a bad example. And Chihuahuas will likely never go extinct. But if they ever did, that would be very sad, but future chihuahuas not existing would be LESS sad than killing healthy dogs at shelters which is happening every day.

    • @Awesomegardner
      @Awesomegardner 5 месяцев назад

      @@stacyplays I’m glad that you agree that it would be sad. I’m against no kill shelters as well but also take into consideration how strong a connection between a dog and a human is and some may always want the same breed to honor and remember one of their former dogs like their first ever dog and having the same breed as their first dog would make them happy and they could still adopt from a shelter as well too. Every dog and dog breed is special and we should protect every dog and dog breed. Good breeders are not overcrowding the shelters it is the ones who just don’t care about the animals which those are the minority of breeders. People should just do whatever they think Is right whether that is adopting from the shelter or a breeder.

    It’s Adopt OR Shop responsibly!!!
    If you think all breeding is unacceptable, go and adopt all the genetically neurotic messes that riddle the shelters and see how much “better” they really are compared to a health-tested, papered, well-bred, purebred dog.
    The difference will always be night and day. Numerous people do not want to waste their time on someone else’s mistake and mess that isn’t their responsibility to take care of.

    As someone who has worked with dogs for about 8 years, I do have to say that even if you are getting a mutt of some sort, it's important that you do research into different breeds out there. Their tendencies go back to what people bred them for even if most breeds may no longer do the jobs they once held. A lot of people say they want big dogs or breeds that may have high energy needs. I think we see a lot of dogs ending in shelters or being rehomed simply based on people not being able to meet their needs. Learning about certian breeds' common health issues help tremendously when trying to care for them. To me, loving dogs is respecting and caring for them all breeds and mutts alike. Learning who/what they are and issues they may have is key.

    Hey Stace, no offense taken from your rant, I do totally agree about the killing dogs thing. As well as other extinct animals. I think humanity is the problem, not just with breeding but everything. I've never really spoke to anyone about the adoption vs breeding discussion, but I've definitely researched the subject and have gathered my own opinions on it. I am happy to discuss and love seeing other comments! :) I do have to say there are a lot of valid responses that have gotten me thinking. (Like Paketche's comment on dedicated rescues of one breed) Paused the video to put my opinion out there as well lol
    First off, I totally agree with adoption! I personally have not adopted myself, but I'm just barely 22 so I've got plenty of life to exist with all sorts of creatures. I do support my local rescues and have referred them to my friends who have gone through with adoption!
    Second, I do agree with ethical breeding, as the breeders will make sure proper health testing and several screenings (including who the dog is going to!) are done. They make sure the dog is going to a home that understands and fits that dog's personality.
    On that note, I believe it is the owner's job to ensure they are selecting the dog that best fits their needs and wants. It is the owner's job to make sure they are looking for a breeder (if they choose that route) that is taking the utmost care for their product! You wouldn't buy a half-eaten taco, right? What about a piece of furniture that is missing screws for the assembly? Same with dogs who have a high risk of some type of disease (BYB Frenchies) or a family history of aggression (BYB Pitties) etc.! Ethical breeders ensure that their product is top quality, therefore the consumers can purchase their product that is PREDICTABLE.
    I DO NOT agree with BACKYARD BREEDING, which IS very different from ethical breeding - again research. Although I do agree breeding can create more of a problem (like the current doodle breeding I see everywhere, so disgusting), I also believe that there are breeders who want to preserve breeds that have helped humans for centuries. These breeds have key features, demeanors, traits etc. For example, Great Pyrs are guard dogs, meant to have a job. If we didn't breed, do you think any kind of mutt could take on a coyote? I'm sure there are, but you can never be sure what you are adopting. What about terriers? Great rodent hunters, not saying that mutts are not - but all breeds have a purpose. They have a strong desire to do one thing. With a mix, you could get a number of different things and also something you don't want, like aggression. Ethical breeders are sure that their dogs do not have negative traits that do not belong in the breed.
    The difference between ethical and backyard breeding ultimately comes down to education and understanding the actual responsibility of owning animals. Why are pits, huskies and doodles etc. a big common problem in shelters? People think they're cute as a puppy then, as they grow, they turn out to need a lot of attention and stability, and people can't handle that. Not only that, but they have more than likely been backyard bred, for someone to make money. Cash grabs. That's also why we see so many puppies constantly...
    I have a dalmatian, and I know what she needs to not be jumping off the walls. I made sure I understood the breed before getting her. My parents bought a dalmatian (BYB OFC) out of spite and jealousy of me (long story) and I can already tell they have several problems, that will only get worse as time progresses. I do think that proper training has a lot to do with things, but genetics DO matter! They matter in all living things, and we can't just ignore that. I think there is a reason why wild animals won't mate with one that is not 100%, because their offspring also would not be 100% and have a high chance of not surviving.
    We probably wouldn't have mutts if there wasn't breeding happening. Most if not all dogs, pure and mixes, in shelters come from backyard breeders - very rarely do I hear of ethical breeder's dogs in shelters. The dogs in shelters come from people who allow 'accidents' to happen or who do not want to take the responsibility. I have heard most ethical breeders make sure their dogs do not end up in shelters and often take back/re-home a dog if it does not fit the family! They want to be sure their product is taken care of. I do believe there are always animals, BYB or not, that will turn out okay, but that is not the case most of the time. A lot of dogs go back to the shelter after a week or so.
    Ultimately, we have the free will to choose, but we should have the common sense to expand our knowledge on what we choose and also be open minded to hear other's experiences. We should know what we have and not think of everything as normal. Maybe one person or one litter won't affect the scale so much, but if everyone does the same thing? It becomes a problem, and we get things like shelters (over-crowded ones at that). I believe due to humanity's greed that we will create a problem to benefits ourselves, in the moment. We need to start thinking about the future that we're not in. Don't let them clean up our messes. This doesn't apply to just dog breeding, but everything that we do.

    Just wanted to add to the breeder vs adoption conversation, there are plenty of rescue groups that are breed-specific if that’s what you’re looking for. I’ve really wanted a Golden Retriever for the past few years but my timing/financial just hasn’t lined up while I’ve been following a local GR rescue program just to check in on what dogs they have. I think it’s a good middle ground for people wanting to do good by animals

    ma'am PLEASE just turn down noteblocks in your audio settings (my apologies i believe the persistent DOOH DOOH DOOH was pushing me to the brink of insanity, retrospectively a gentle suggestion would have sufficed 😞)
