This song showed up at the hospital as I was holding my daughter for the very first time after she was born. God has a way of putting the right music in your life at the right moments in your life. Every time I hear this song it reminds me of that moment of unexplainable Joy that all parents feel in that magical moment.

The saxophonist probably doesn't realize that the intro phrase is already childish. Important notes are a half step off.
There are too many such parts in this performance. That's what makes Satchmo's regacy a blasphemy. That's why Pat Metheny told him no.

@@hiroono1 The saxophonist was Kenny G. I thought he did a wonderful job with this tune! It is very difficult to reproduce a piece of music (with permission, of course), add to it, and get it right. Learning a tune like this, and playing it by ear on the piano, is a different thing, and ALMOST impossible, but I did it, after not seriously playing piano, since I was 10. The reason it's almost impossible, is that when you're listening to music on the stereo, when you hear it the notes change pitch ever so slightly, because of the shape of the ear drum. To try and mimic on the keyboard what you're hearing, you have to go up half an octave, before it "sounds right." The minute you do that, you end up having to play sharps and flats. My Father used to call this, "Playing in the cracks." There's that extra note in between each key, that nobody can seem to find . . . !

    • @hiroono1
      @hiroono1 6 месяцев назад

@@deirdrejohnson3468 You seem unable to hear chromatic intervals.
The notes Kenny G plays do not contain important intervals. You do not have the ability to understand them.

    As Pat Metheny said:
"But when Kenny G decided that it was appropriate for him to defile the music of the man who is probably the greatest jazz musician that has ever lived by spewing his lame-ass, jive, pseudo bluesy, out-of-tune, noodling, wimped out, fucked up playing all over one of the great Louis's tracks (even one of his lesser ones), he did something that I would not have imagined possible.
He, in one move, through his unbelievably pretentious and calloused musical decision to embark on this most cynical of musical paths, shit all over the graves of all the musicians past and present who have risked their lives by going out there on the road for years and years developing their own music inspired by the standards of grace that Louis Armstrong brought to every single note he played over an amazing lifetime as a musician.
By disrespecting Louis, his legacy and by default, everyone who has ever tried to do something positive with improvised music and what it can be, Kenny G has created a new low point in modern culture - something that we all should be totally embarrassed about - and afraid of."

    To all the haters:
I don't follow jazz. I don't have the experience that might dictate being angry over how Kenny G covers this song. I just know that I've been playing the saxophone (alto) long enough to respect the clarity and smoothness of the tone. On top of that, I simply think that it sounds very nice. Unfortunately, Mr. Armstrong isn't here to settle the matter, but I hope that he would think better of this than you all supposedly do in memory of him. What a wonderful world, indeed.

      I just found this. (2024?)
This was one of the tunes that brought me back to the piano, after not touching one, since I was 12.
I'd put this on the stereo, and ATTEMPT to try and play it, but I found I was using a lot of the black keys!
I persevered until I got it "right," (in my mind), and then my Father--who was an accomplished musician himself--came home from work one evening, heard the piano (and the stereo), stood behind me until I was done playing. It took a second or two, and then he said: "That, is the most difficult piece to learn how to play!" ("Sentimental Journey," is another one that's difficult to copy from stereo to piano). "How long have you been doing that?!!!" I said:
      "A week."
No sheet music--just playing by ear.
After that, my Father dug out all of the sheet music he'd put away, thinking he'd never play it again. (40's music).
      I was "challenged" daily, after that . . .

"Not long ago, Kenny G put out a recording where he overdubbed himself on top of a 30+ year old Louis Armstrong record, the track "What a Wonderful World". With this single move, Kenny G became one of the few people on earth I can say that I really can't use at all - as a man, for his incredible arrogance to even consider such a thing, and as a musician, for presuming to share the stage with the single most important figure in our music.
This type of musical necrophilia - the technique of overdubbing on the preexisting tracks of already dead performers - was weird when Natalie Cole did it with her dad on "Unforgettable" a few years ago, but it was her dad. When Tony Bennett did it with Billie Holiday it was bizarre, but we are talking about two of the greatest singers of the 20th century who were on roughly the same level of artistic accomplishment. When Larry Coryell presumed to overdub himself on top of a Wes Montgomery track, I lost a lot of the respect that I ever had for him - and I have to seriously question the fact that I did have respect for someone who could turn out to have such unbelievably bad taste and be that disrespectful to one of my personal heroes.
But when Kenny G decided that it was appropriate for him to defile the music of the man who is probably the greatest jazz musician that has ever lived by spewing his lame-ass, jive, pseudo bluesy, out-of-tune, noodling, wimped out, fucked up playing all over one of the great Louis's tracks (even one of his lesser ones), he did something that I would not have imagined possible. By disrespecting Louis, his legacy and by default, everyone who has ever tried to do something positive with improvised music and what it can be, Kenny G has created a new low point in modern culture - something that we all should be totally embarrassed about - and afraid of. We ignore this, "let it slide", at our own peril.
His callous disregard for the larger issues of what this crass gesture implies is exacerbated by the fact that the only reason he possibly have for doing something this inherently wrong (on both human and musical terms) was for the record sales and the money it would bring.
Since that record came out - in protest, as insignificant as it may be, I encourage everyone to boycott Kenny G recordings, concerts and anything he is associated with. If asked about Kenny G, I will diss him and his music with the same passion that is in evidence in this little essay. " - Pat Metheny

I can't believe intelligent adults carry on like the above. So you don't like him and that automatically trumps anything he does. You don't have to listen to it if you don't like it.

Beautiful Lyrics, Beautiful Instrument. They both make you feel good, if only for a moment, then sadly you have get back to what the world is really about, as evident in the comments.....hate.

When I was a kid, my Mum & Dad used to turn the volume up in the car when this was played on the radio. I hated it. Now many years on I love it, and with Kenny G on it I think it is much better that the original.

They like myself are jazz enthusiasts. They understand jazz, they understand that Louie would want this crap on his work. Imagine you are a painter and you paint something that the world identifies with you. Imagine decades later someone takes your painting and draws squiggles all over it trying to ride on your notoriety and makes a lot of money doing so.
IF you were an artist that would kill you. Yes intelligent people can feel that way.

I never understood the hate for kenny g. Sure its not bop or fusion. Sure its smoothed out. But listen to whats on smooth jazz channels now. This stuff blows it away. Music is music and he's got enough tallent to make it work.

He, in one move, through his unbelievably pretentious and calloused musical decision to embark on this most cynical of musical paths, shit all over the graves of all the musicians past and present who have risked their lives by going out there on the road for years and years developing their own music inspired by the standards of grace that Louis Armstrong brought to every single note he played over an amazing lifetime as a musician.- Pat Metheny
