Hi all! Ahead of the premiere of our reconstruction of ‘The Missing Coach’, I just wanted to say a few things. Firstly, please do not go into this expecting a 100% accurate depiction of what could have been. The script for the lost episode is likely in Mattel’s archives or in the possession of a collector, so we had to guess what would’ve made the cut from the original books as well as how it could’ve been depicted. This included altering or removing several scenes and lines of dialogue to ensure that the reconstruction was 4 minutes and 30 seconds like the other episodes of Series 2, so don’t be surprised if some things didn’t make it in. We’ve also tried to be as accurate to Series 2 as we can, but some shots have been taken from Series 3 out of necessity since nothing similar exists for Series 2. Please keep that in mind. Secondly, I want to give a massive thank you to Thomas and TUGS Man, GermanOfSodor, Tidmouth Milk, trainsandtugs and Percy66 c for their contributions to the project. They’ve been incredible and without them, this wouldn’t have been possible. Thirdly, I do plan on going back and updating this over time, especially if higher quality images from the story are released to the public, or more unlikely, the original script or some footage. For now though, I hope you enjoy ‘The Missing Coach’ and I can’t wait to hear what you think! If you have any questions regarding the reconstruction, please reply to this thread and I’ll answer them in a video response later down the line! UPDATE 06/09/20: Pre-production on a 'Gordon Goes Foreign' reconstruction is now underway. I'm currently scouring through clips from the TV series that are a close match for the book illustrations and developing a rough storyboard. It may be some time before it comes out, but if I could get uhhhhhhhhh 1K subscribers then I'll make it a top priority video and try and get it out asap. Thanks chiefs.
This is an absolutely excellent reconstruction of what The Missing Coach would've been like had it made it to television. Whilst it was disappointing that the episode was scrapped during production, I CAN understand why Britt Allcroft axed it. I understood the plot fine when I read the story when I was a kid, but it may not have translated well onto television. All these rare photos over the years - especially over the last few days - have been amazing. And it does give me hope one day that the lost footage itself may actually see the light of day somehow. Efforts to reconstruct the episode via computer simulations, models, photos & footage from other episodes...they've all resulted in many RUclips recreations that have ranged from genuinely-great to poor. THIS ONE is one of the best, guys! Be proud of your work and all your efforts! And seriously...KUDOS to those who found these extremely rare production shots.
I get that the story didn’t translate well enough to television, but if you ask me, this episode being scrapped for possible confusion just ended up being hypocritical on Britt’s part - there were stories in season 3, all of which I can tell were just made for the sake of giving Shining Time Station more stories to use when you really study the season hard enough, that could get super confusing as a result of having to blend in stories from previously adapted story arcs (Trouble with Mud is a good example) while also having to put in a ton of filler/another story from Andrew Brenner to somehow make it work (again, Trouble with Mud comes in mind and the same goes for Trust Thomas). In the end, confusing as it may have been, I really wish they had continued with it because Donald and Douglas’ introduction in Breakvan was very poor and rushed, and as a kid, I often wondered why it felt like I was in the middle of a story when I first saw the episode on my Thomas, Percy and the Dragon tape (American fan). Reading the stories in the books made a lot more sense, and then I felt somewhat empty on the inside from feeling like I was lied to with the show.
I feel like with some new screenshots shown off a few weeks ago and from all the new screenshots from this cancelled episode I feel like things might be a step close to discovering the full episode of this cancelled mystery
It's really impressive that you got this into 4:30. I've seen a lot of versions of this episode fail to do that. Great stuff. Finding out there are more pictures blew my mind. It really seemed like they filmed the whole episode. Wish they would do a special "Lost Episode" edit and bring back Ringo Starr. EDIT: That said, I can see why they shelved it. It's hard to explain the tender switch in such a brief amount of time in a way that kids can understand. It's a shame though.
When I saw the stills of Donald with Douglas’s tender uncoupled I didn’t know how that would look, it just looked so weird. Yet now! It seems like I’ve watched the entire episode! I have you to thank for that
With only a minute left I was worried how this would end. Hands down my favorite missing coach recreation within the constraints of the tv series time frame. Excellent work!
So the original episode was cancelled cause allcroft thought it was too confusing for kids (I assume the tender swap) but this creation is perfectly understandable and watchable and actually astounds me that the original crew couldn’t have thought of this. Nice job Obornom👍
Definitely the best reconstruction on RUclips. Hopefully, someone out there is a good George Carlin impersonator for the US version. It's too bad we can't have the real George Carlin, since he's been dead for 12 years. Unlike The Missing Coach, Gordon Goes Foreign was _never_ in production for budget reasons. While Big City Engine would've used a modified version of Henry's model, they would've had to build a scale replica of King's Cross Station, which would've costed too much.
This is a great reconstruction and showcases (perhaps) why it was cut. Between introducing the twins, having Duck show them around, the confrontation with Gordon and Henry, and the Special Coach, it really is too much to fit into 4:30. In fact, the titular coach doesn't even get mentioned until halfway through the episode. Cutting the Gordon/Henry bit may have been the answer. It does feel breathless for the format.
Agreed. We kept to the normal time format as we felt that it would not be an accurate depiction had we gone on any longer. I personally would like to do an extended version at some point with the other chaps, but we'll see.
This was great Tidmouth did a great job at the narration and I’m more than happy to have helped out on the animation of the eyes and the editing the scenes with Thomas and the Special Coach 😁
It isn't too hard to cut it all down to that timeframe honestly, Hullo Twins and Missing Coach have quite a bit of dialogue that can easily be trimmed down or removed entirely so it flows together as one piece, like the explanation for the special coach.
Oh my gosh this is amazing it literally feels like it’s the actual thing and the animations or whatever you did a great job with that too I don’t know what to say amazing .... it art LOL but seriously amazing job 10.1/10
This was really well put together and I love you were able to make it the same length as an actual episode. I can tell you and the others did the very best you could with what was available.
This reminds me of a video I saw ten years ago where someone put the RWS audiobook narration over already existing shots from the series. I'm glad it can now be reconstructed more accurately thanks to those new images
That idea of D&D at Tidmouth confronting the big engines is such an awesome scene I'd love to see. They definitely have the most backbone of all the classic engines and wouldn't take that from them
Donald and Douglas are both my favourite twin engines in Thomas and friends series since they appear back in Season 2, I even like their theme song. Still I wished I could have seen more of Donald and Douglas in each episodes for the rest of Thomas and friends before CGI has ended and replace with Season 25 in reboot.
You know what this reminds me of? It reminds me of those reconstructions of missing Dr Who episodes that used telesnaps and the original audio. Except this one had less to work with (Snapshots, some footage used from other episodes and no original audio). Overall, its a pretty good visualisation of what could have been.
Loose Cannon’s reconstructions of lost Doctor Who serials were in fact the main inspiration for this project, albeit without the script directions appearing. May be something I’ll add to future versions of this reconstruction. Thank you for your kind words!
This is a truly excellent reconstruction. It's easy to see why this episode was skipped, though. It's rather dull compared to some of the others in series 2.
