Will any more Tar Heels transfer out? | What roster holes does UNC need to fill?

- Last Friday, James Okonkwo announced plans to enter the transfer portal. On Tuesday, the day after the National Championship, Seth Trimble did the same. As things stand currently, those are the only two Tar Heel defections of any kind (transfer or NBA Draft). Will Coach Hubert Davis see any other players transfer out this offseason? We wait to find out.
What holes are still in the roster? The biggest is the one vacated by Armando Bacot at the center position. UNC needs another big to fill out the frontcourt. Additionally, the Heels lost their starting Small Forward, Cormac Ryan. Is his replacement already on the roster, or will Coach Davis go looking to fill that void as well?

It's always good listening to coach Rob's stories and hearing his viewpoint.
I think if you look at last year's transfers and where they landed they would have been better staying put. Other than Love they had less than great seasons
Next year's SF is on the roster - Harrison Ingram. With 2 small guards (again) and no Bacot at C, we will need to be bigger at forward until we see how Drake Powell acclimates to college. I see a new starter at center, preferably Maxime Rayaud (7'1", 250 lbs., 36% from three on two attempts a game), Washington and Withers at 4 and backup 5, Ingram and Powell at 3 with Ingram seeing some time at 4, Cadeau, Davis, and Ian Jackson at guard. Hubert will probably look for a shooting specialist (or two) for the 2/3 spots when needed.
I don’t think Ingram is returning he’s made it clear a couple times already he’s ready for the NBA so I’ll be shocked if he returns
@@jgodoy80 My former assistant coached at Stanford the last few years. He anticipates Maxime returning to Stanford to finish his degree.
@@jgodoy80 I hadn't heard that, but he would be a fool to leave unless a team guarantees to pick him in the first round. I expect he may enter and then return if he finds he's not a first rounder. Did see one mock that has him late first.

Seth would have been an elite 2 guard his senior year. What better place than UNC to show the pros your potential at the next level. So many 1 and done, and 2 and done players coming through the Carolina ranks. Seth needed more patience.
Perfect spot for Seth would be Houston where he could showcase his defense and driving ability while continuing to work on his 3 point shot.
I would love to see James Okonkwo at Appalachian State. They were so close to getting a bid to the big dance this year.
This portal shenanigans is just insane. It making coaching kids near impossible. College trading kids like baseball cards. This portal has to come to a close but that is highly unlikely. The good American dollar has taken hold. What ever happened to a kid competing for a spot.
The portal does make coaching kids difficult because college athletes have the power/control not the coaches and universities. It's not going away and neither is NIL, so coaches need to adapt or retire - and so many long time coaches have. It's a balancing act for coaches and kids have the freedom to make bad choices. Tyler Nickel is a great case study. Comes to Carolina as a scorer who never had to play much defense in high school. Gets early playing time but shoots 37% and 22% from 3. Too slow to play 3 and too weak to play 4, he's a defensive liability. Even though his defense improves somewhat over the course of the season, his poor shooting percentage/scoring never justifies additional playing time due to his defensive liabilities. Unhappy with his playing time, he leaves for Virginia Tech instead of coming back and working to improve his game. On a less talented team, he gets the 4th most minutes and 5th most shot attempts, plays better defense, and shoots a respectable 44% with 40% from 3! With a number of players leaving, Nickel would likely have been the focal point of the offense next season but decides to drop another notch lower on the team caliber scale, transferring from Virginia Tech to Vanderbilt. I can't fault him for leaving Carolina as he would likely never have been a starter. Virginia Tech seemed like a good choice - closer to home, still in the ACC and at a decent basketball school. Leaving for Vanderbilt makes no sense. Mike Young is supposed to be a good coach but maybe there was a problem.
@@TL-175 I agree 1000 pct. Saw a kid in the tournament on his 4 team in 5 years. Absolutely absurd to me but as you said in your comment it is not going away. Great analysis on this. I don't understand Tyler's choices either going there with a new coach etc.

seth was really disappointing. hope this means rj is back, ec is back and ian will not decommit. i also hope it means we will be getting another wing or combo guard that can shoot the 3 very well.

I see this Seth transfer coming coach Davis doesn’t use her bench at all .. he played paxson ‘shot min. In that tight game with baumm 🤔 why cuz he didn’t play him since the beginning of the yr.
If Ingram leaves then they have to go get someone to help fill that void. Withers and High are great pieces but the Heels will need more help if Ingram leaves.
Why can’t Ingram be the 3? That’s what he will be at the next level.
Look at the highlight films Danny Wolfe not a starting center in the ACC he's horrible on defense he's worse than Armando he would be good coming off the bench but not an impact player he got abused in the San Diego State game
It stinks to see Trimble go, but there’s just not enough minutes to go around. If Ian Jackson lives up, it will end up as a net gain
You can't replace Tremble's defense and I wouldn't be surprised to see him land at Marquette where Shaka's pressing style would showcase Tremble's strong defensive game

Why you think that? His playing time goes up even more with Armando gone. Not to mention he will be a junior. Zayden or James Brown is not starting over him. Only way I can see he possibly go is the fact that UNC get that transfer from Yale. Which they just broke the news they are meeting with him just no date is set yet. Either way it’s too many positives there for him saying he is staying
I would love to see him at the 4. He can space the floor and has a good jump shot. I really don't see him banging down low. He has a prototypical NBA stretch 4 body style.

How did the last Ivy League portal transfer work out for UNC (WOJIC) too slow, couldn't jump and just was out matched that's why he stopped seeing playing time. In the Bama game Ryan and Wojic had a two on one and instead of filling the lane Wojic spotted up when Ryan came down in transition with the ball and Ryan pulled the ball up instead of driving to the basket because Wojic allowed the defender to just defend Ryan instead of continuing to the basket with Ryan, SURE COULD HAVE USED THOSE TWO POINTS and the BACOT MISSED UNCONTESTED DUNK
The NIL will change cbb for the worst.
Tar Heel fans, yes, we are losing Trimble. Don't worry, Drake Powell might be a better defender and better offensively than Trimble.

Drake could be better eventually. Defense and team defense takes a minute. Look how long it took EC to learn defense.
With Drake and Captain Jack if they stay two years sky's the limit
