    Spoilers: Absolutely nothing.
Inklings and Octolings only dissolve when they fall into a huge body of water, where there is more water than the ink in their body.
For example, if they fall into the ocean, the ratio of water vs ink is like 99.99 to 0.001, so they dissolve. But if they just dip a finger in water, its harmless.
How else would they drink soda and juice, which is just water with additives and fruit?

@@thehatter9400 technically yes and no, rain is just little bits of water falling together and quickly, so i think that it would be safe to assume that if they move away and hide quickly it won't do anything.
Also consider their clothes, they may not be water resistant (i think they would be more water resistant than our average clothes considering water is a danger for them) but it's likely that they can hold off rain water long enough for the ink/octolings to find a safer place.

I think inklings work in a way which allows their bodies to merge and absorb small amounts of water, like a glass of it. When they're introduced to a large body of water, their body cannot absorb it which results in their body trying to spread it's molecules across the entire surface area in the efforts of absorbing it, which their bodies can't handle, causing them to be splatted.

Inkfish skin is so thin that the pressure from falling into or being submerged into water that's more than knee deep will result in their skin literally imploding from the pressure. The skin is so thin in order to allow them to transform between swim form and human form. (as confirmed by a dev interview awhile back)
So no, nothing will happen if one dips their fingers or even hand in a glass of water. They may feel a bit more pressure than, say, we would, but it wouldnt dissolve them or do anything of that sorts

One of my friends theorized actually it's not based on how much water covers their body. Rather it's based on the water density.
Inklings can drink water, and they shower too according to Marie. What my friend theorizes is if the water is fresh water, for say drinking water, showers, and sinks, they can survive. However, if the water has too much density, especially containing salt, they would dissolve. Pools and fountains are known for using chlorine to disinfect, which happens to contain sodium chloride.

  • @Meep_kun
    @Meep_kun Год назад +53

Inklings are not hurt by water itself, they are just unable to swim in it and get overhydrated when they enter in contact with water this is all due to SALT.
inklings are adapted to a high osmotic pressure environiment created by their own ink which is rich in Sodium, this keeps their squishy structure in a constant balance of water and electrolites, but when they enter a low osmotic pressure environiment like regular or salt water their cells get bloated with water molecules and they take cellular damage.
a little water wouldn't hurt them (like we see in game) but prolonged exposure to it and specially swimming in it would cause more serious damage although not as instant as we see in game.
this is the exact same reason why we can't put salt water fish in freshwater environiments.
TLDR inklings absorb and release salt constantly from both their ink and their environiment, if you put them in water it would not kill them immediately but they wouldn't be able to swim in it, just like how a human has an easier time floating in salty water compared to freshwater

I think the problem is that the inkling COULD in theory survive in water, but instead of just prolonging the inevitable they allow themselves to dissolve, so that they respawn faster (the attempts to swim likely natural reactions). Otherwise, how would they drink water? Also, the pool in Mahi-Mahi Resort implies that inklings and octolings CAN swim. I think the issue with the water in salmon run is that it’s akin to enemy ink, which would cause them to splat.

It’s a pressure differential thing. If the pressure exerted onto their body is greater than X, their body cannot handle it and they splat. Water has a density high enough to cause enough pressure for them to splat. But the thing is, you need enough pressure exerted across the ENTIRE body to cause a splat. In this case, while it would likely be uncomfortable, they still have enough internal pressure elsewhere in their body that this would never be able to splat them. You need a total sum of pressure across the body to create enough pressure to overpower their internal pressure, and a simple hand in water simply cannot achieve that.

  • @Lula5YL

They actually have an organ in their body that reacts to pressure change from water causing it to expand to the point the inkling/octoling explodes; though its more around their waist/belly thats why they can dip limbs and submerge parts of themselves and be fine.

If they fall in water then diffusion happens and all that ink is mixed with water and their ink body dissolves. If they put hand in big body of water than it would happen but it would be slower and probably would just dissolve their hand. If it's only glass of water then the water would turn into ink or maybe it would be absorbed by ink body.

I imagine the way it works is that inkling guts are highly hypertonic with porous skin, meaning water would flow in very quickly and basically flush out any ink and guts in the part of the body dipped in water. This is why we see ink splashing out of an inkling when they fall into water. This could also be the case with how splatting works: the enemy ink flows into the inkling and flushes out their ink, then basically filling them and popping their skin with the ink, creating the ink explosion when an inkling gets splatted.
Very disturbing, but likely the truth.

the ink in the inklings body basically diffuses into the water when they fall into a pool or the ocean or similar (and as they are nothing but ink and cartilage for the most part, this is not good). a small amount of water wouldnt be awful but it shouldnt really be advised to stick their hands in and keep them there, rather dry it off quickly. prolonged exposure or exposure to a large quantity of water would kill them fairly fast.

If you ever watch the animation when Inklings fall in water, in squid form they just poof. But in human form they struggle a bit and flail around.
In the OG Splatoon people were just said to "not know how to swim" rather than water being fatal in some of the dialog. Which suggests that their humanoid form is probably actually as water resistant as most humans. And the fact that they drop so fast in a Turf War if they fall in water is them intentionally respawning to get back to the action.

Iirc, the only reason Inkling and Octlings splat in water in gameplay, is because they’re ink weapons and tank are hooked up via a tube connected to their ink sack.
This allows them to supply ink to their weapons. And when they enter water when hooked up to their weapons and ink tank, water gets into this system and floods their ink sack organ. Basically drowning them.
Outside of wargames, they enter water like pools, showers and baths fine.

This made me think of an interesting mechanic for an ink based character
The ink they're made out of is water soluble, meaning they're able to dissolve in water.
Water elements can make them get "thinner", giving them higher movement and attack speed, as well as transparency, but lowers their attack damage, defense, and max health
If they get too thin, they die, and when they respawn, they're back to the default stats and thickness

I remember there someone made a video debating about whether Inklings could take a shower in water. They went on for like 20 minutes discussing theories only to have it all disproven at the very end with a post-recording edit saying that Nintendo had the answer to that question: Inklings and Octolings have thinner skin than humans, which is why they burst/splat when submerged in water- they simply can't withstand the water pressure. However, that makes it perfectly safe for them to take a shower/be covered in water.
Now, submerging a fist or finger in a glass of water? I'm not sure about that front, but I'm willing to wager it would slightly hurt for someone to dip their finger or fist in. Something like adapting to a change in atmospheric pressure. (I flew from MNL to LAX a couple months ago, and when I landed my fingers started swelling up to the point where I thought they were going to burst. I assume the pain would feel something similar to that.)

  • @enrolledink
    @enrolledink Год назад

theres next to zero pressure in a glass of water. so being that these cephalopods are practically made entirely of ink, nothing will happen. however, something like an 8ft pool of water for example would definitely dissolve them due to higher water pressure.
although, they may be able to float cuz water is more dense than ink, making them prone buoyant in water. that wont last long tho since again, they'd be dissolved already.
another example for the heck of it, cephalopods would also be fine in the rain and showers since its only droplets of water. it would take a simple garden hose to splat them.

If they are covered in pernament ink they would not dissolve in bodies of water but if more ink is covered and the ink isnt pernament they will melt dissolve when inklings or octolings come with bodies not covered in pernament ink
The result depends if its pernament ink or normal ink because really its sticky ink and not pernament ink because a inkling is splat by another inkling or octoling and the ink spreads off with time so definitely dropped in water and hes melted as normal ink
Full body of soda or acids can dissolve the inkling
Eg: Acids enzymes dissolve the inkling in a pool of water or hand like food in you body traveling to poop
Inklings or Octolings should be careful of Water, acid or soft drink

Inklings and octolings can't swim, so when they jump into water with a fully developed body, they struggle to keep their head above the water for a split second before dying due to being splatted by drowning. They'd be perfectly fine if they were in waist to lower chest deep water, but anything above that point would kill them.

  • @WitchCandyVODs

Apparently it was canonized that they just can't swim? But I like the theory that while they can stand in water, if they end up fully submerged it ends up being too much and they well, splat themselves. The gear they wear must be heavy, which makes it hard to stay above water which is why you see them struggling.
This also supports that one picture of callie and Marie in swim gear, something they won't need unless they're able to be in water. There must be pools, and beaches that are safe, and if this theory is correct these pools are all definitely shallow
Tldr: in this theory I enjoy, they can drink, be in the rain/snow, and even take baths/showers as long as they're not fully submerged.

I'm not sure exactly where I've heard it, considering i don't even play Splatoon, but:
Technically, they're mostly fine inside water, however, it's their equipment that makes it lethal.
Apparently, they themselves create the ink they use, and their equipment just extracts the ink from their bodies and readies it.
When they fall in water, the water infiltrates the equipment, which being connected directly to the inkling, lets a ton of water enter their bodies all at once in places where it isn't meant to be, which makes them dissolve.
But theoretically (this is the part when I start speculating), if they fall in water without equipment, they should last a whole lot longer before dissolving, and dipping the human part in water should do absolutely nothing.

  • @wutadam
