Rising food prices deepen food insecurity: Kentse Radebe

  • One in five South African households does not have enough food on the table, and the situation is growing worse as food prices soar. Research by the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group (PMBEJD shows that South Africans are finding it increasingly difficult to afford basic, nutritious food and the situation is even far worse for those living on a minimum wage. The worst food hit by prices hikes are vegetables, cooking oils, bread and dairy products. DG Murray Trust says child hunger and resulting malnutrition was a national emergency and should be the number one issue for politicians and businesses as we head to general elections.
