Hey! For the main licks/ideas I record it with the Neural Dsp Archetype Petrucci plugin to get the best sound for that. For the lesson segment it's the same setting but my guitar comes out of my studio monitors straight into the room and gets picked up by my clip on mic. It would take forever to try to balance and "duck" the guitar out while talking otherwise.
Hey man have you ever analyzed/learned bits of early Petrucci solos, I'm thinking of from like "The Killing Hand" -- "Afterlife" and other really early tunes. Apparently he incorporated a lot of Yngwie licks, could be a cool breakdown for a video. Peace!
Hey! I played "A Fortune In Lies" and "Ytse Jam" back in the day with two of my bands. Not a big fan of this record though, it's so poorly mixed compared to the subsequent records so didn't really pay much attention to it besides these two songs.
that's awesome you used to cover them. and true about the mixing, I probably have listened to live versions of those tracks wayyy more than the WDADU studio versions.
