  • This is a short clip from the belt promotions we did at my gym back in October 2022. In the clip you'll see me promote one of my students to Black Belt. It's been around 10 years since he started and he's been one of the most consistent people on the mats even being 40 when he started BJJ and is now 50 years old. He's had some injuries along the way and kept coming and gotten very good at Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
In the video I also share why I try to give Black Belts that I wear to my students when I promote them.
Just a sneak peek from inside the gym.
    -Chewy
P.S Sorry about the kids in the background. I know the noise can be a bit much. They were playing on the other side of the gym and I didn't think the mic would pic it up as much as it did.

Trained consistently for the first 4 years but no where near as much as I would’ve liked the last year because of Covid lockdowns/birth of my 2nd child & now a torn medial meniscus. Looking to start going minimum 3 times a week next year. Can’t wait to push myself again in this beautiful art that is BJJ. Congrats to the gentleman in this video…..must be an incredible feeling receiving that black belt. ☺️👊🏼🥋

I’m 40 and just started training BJJ. I dive into everything I do at 100% full speed. I bought a few Gi’s and paid for an entire year up front. I have enough time to be at the academy as much as 8 times per week. My goal is to make it to Black Belt in 8 years. I’m not gonna beat myself up if I don’t get there in that time frame, this is just a goal I have set for myself. I’ll grow as fast as my Professors see fit. But I’m in shape, I’m athletic, I eat right and take care of my body and learn really fast. So I think it’s attainable.

Congratulations! I will be 60 in a few days, started about 8 years ago and became a brown belt 5 months ago. Last week I decided I was going to quit. I felt like I couldn't keep up with the 20 -30 year olds and if I did well it wasn't from years of rolling it was because they were going easy on me - a 'pity party', which I don't want. I could not accept my limitations. However, I do love Jiu Jitsu. I told my Coach about quitting. He definitely was not pleased. He has encouraged me for many years- (whenever I have doubts like now). He once again convinced me not to quit. BUT - I still am very sad about my age etc and it's always in my mind that if I just quit I would not have to think about it.

@@deifor Hi, good, sensible advice- I have thought about taking a break, but I kind of work like that saying 'an object in motion will stay I motion..etc'. I have taken a break 2× - once for rotator cuff surgery- about 4.5 months- the other, Covid shutdown. Aside from those pretty much train 4-6×/week. I get paranoid that others will get 'ahead' of me. So either I'm in or I'm out (yes, not necessarily sensible)

    • @juandenz2008

An aging body can definitely make things more challenging. On the other hand you have to ask yourself what made you want to take the BJJ journey in the first place ? If it is no longer rewarding then there is no harm in devoting your resources to another activity. On the other hand if you still feel like you can get a lot from BJJ, maybe you just need to reduce your training frequency a bit to prevent burnout. 4-6x / week is quite a lot. It's probably a mistake to try and compare yourself to others too much. Sometimes I feel like there is too much focus on the competitive nature of BJJ as opposed to each person focusing on their own personal growth.

I think the reason a lot of people are starting BJJ so late in life is because when they were younger, most of them didn't know much about it. I think the awareness of BJJ came in 4 distinct waves:
    1. Televised UFC/MMA matches
    2. The rise in violent crime prompting you to learn self defense
    3. Tired of the same old fitness routines and wanting something different
    4. The enormous amount of RUclips videos that espouse the benefits of the sport
If it weren't for YT videos, I think many still wouldn't try bjj. The videos are very helpful in filling in the gaps of information on why people should try it.
