The criticism is valid and they said they will learn from it but half the community just wants to cancel this movie. Can't they appreciate that this was a at least one step in the right direction.
It's stupid and misguided. Leslie Grace, the female lead, is Afrolatina herself. And now the criticism is that they want DARKER actors? That's admitting that the criticism is not about identity or representation. It's in bad faith.

In terms of colorism and the lack of afro-latino people in main roles, I think one of the biggest losses from the adaptation is the cutting of the conflict between Kevin and Benny. I think cutting Camilla had lots of negative impacts, but one of the biggest was this gutting of Kevin's storylines and, generally, flaws. The play really does go into anti-blackness and "us vs. them" in latinx communities in the Kevin and Benny storyline, and I was really sad to see it missing from the movie, bc not only was it an important part of the Rosarios story, but of Benny's arc as well. The darker skinned characters were the ones here to get their stories chopped down and that's a real let down
I'm usually a musical nut and was expecting this to have been pretty good but idk. So many of the songs felt same-y and kept totally changing tempo and tone midway through them to accommodate more storylines. The songs in general felt like they kept dragging just for the sake of huge dance numbers that are neat but don't really do anything. It's also really irritating to see more latin stereotypes like the tiny abuelita matriarch and the easily-angered father. The entire film was lit like it took place under supermarket lights and it made 90% of the thing feel like one gigantic coke commercial. Plus none of the colours ever made me think "yeah it's actually as deathly hot as they're saying it is." The absolutely biggest missed opportunities for me though are it not taking advantage of the medium and not using more diegetic sound. That first scene with the sewer cover record scratch had me thinking they were going to incorporate the environment into the songs since all the trailers were like "let me listen to my street" and talking about the importance of the setting. I was hoping for some sort of latin-heavy Stomp-meets-Rent but it just felt like . . . Rent the movie.
"Coke commercial" 😂 Yeah there are some deeper adaptation issues that I'm excited to delve into in a later video. Still not sure how I personally feel about the music hardly changing from the original.
