Its to cover any sharp edges on a strike where the mono can rub on. We run 100lb-300lb runners or “rub line” here in hawaii due to sharp lava rock. However ive seen clean cuts on mono due to sharp tackle edges, sharks, and constant abrasion from GTs
@@kriskee89Been fishing since the late 70s and never see heat shrink used for fishing, other than my trolling friends who use it on their double or tandem hook set ups to keep them lined up straight and not getting tangled up in the skirts. Seems kinda useless, especially on this dead -end slide stopper. Once the slide hits the stop ring setup thats meant to capture it and prevent it from going back up the line, that wire of the slide and the THICKER TiG welding wire locked together will be taking a lot of the abuse and abrasion on those contact points. That thin plastic on the heat shrink will get mangled! Aside from the rock and reef contact, tail strikes and body rubs from the fish, or other lines the fish might run into during a fight, the rub line should be able to handle that if you chose the appropriate size and length. I doubt that thin heat shrink gonna do anything or serve any purpose on a battle with a fish, especially a decent sized one! Thats the reason for my initial question to the OP. No disrespect my bruddah, just my 2 cents 🤙🏽.
Frankie Fernandez all respect here bruddah! To each their own. I personally wouldnt use it on the stopper, but the slide itself since I mostly slide live bait, that when alive could contact or wrap around my main before it hits the stopper. The whole rig would be useless if the slide causes a nick on the main mono. However this would be a great experiment, heat shrink vs non heat shrink slide and abrasion test.

Im pretty sure its 1/16 i went to buy some it matches the slide wire i had from previous slides. The welding rod seems slightly softer than what i used before but after a stress test it should hold up
really difficult bending 400/600lb wire with hand tools and keeping them in frame - if you are able to find a solution, please share with me so I can make things better.
was hard to manage with the stiffness of the wire, but you can actually see the before and after. will try better next time. might redo this down the line.

So the plastic shrink tube is for anti abrasion purposes on metal to metal contact points??

What size is that 304 tig welding rod? 1/8 in?
you know what, when I bought it, there were two sizes, one thick and one thin, if I find my caliper, I will measure and post it here.
