PG’S John Bohlinger hung with Marcus King before his gig at Nashville’s 3rd and Lindsley. King goes with the tried-and-true combination of Gibsons and Supers to blend with his rocking band of soulful horns and funky keyboards.
King’s No. 1 is this 2016 Gibson Memphis 1964 ES-345TD reissue. It replaced his grandfather’s vintage 345 which is too valuable to beat up on tour.
The backup is his 2016 Gibson Les Paul goldtop ’57 reissue loaded up with Seymour Duncan Antiquities. It has a total Duane Allman “Layla” vibe. Both Gibsons are strung with Elixr .011-.049 strings and King uses Dunlop Jazz 3 picks.

Real amps. A few great guitars, one pedal for attenuation and that’s it. No auto tune. No bullshit fake singers. True guitarist and great singer. No matter what he’s using. Pure talent.
Marcus has changed many many things and now has a pedal board & new amps. We need a new rundown with him!!
***2nd this!!!
what does he play now?
@@blameitonablackstar Lately it looks like he is playing Orange amps and he never used pedals other than a tubescreamer.
i know Im asking the wrong place but does anybody know of a way to get back into an instagram account?
I was dumb forgot the password. I would love any tips you can give me.
@Julius Nixon Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and Im in the hacking process now.
Seems to take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Man what a joy it is to watch Marcus King continue to grow and "Take the World by Storm". I've been fortunate enough to see him play live and the young man just stomps. He plays blues, soul, funk, rock, delta blues, country, psychedelic rock, jazz, jam band acid rock etc. He'll fuse in and out of all those styles then he'll throw in a little Eddie Van Halen topped off with a BB King punctuation. The kid is HOT!!!
I know a lot of folks love those long rundowns that go 40 minutes plus (and certainly nothing wrong with that) but you gotta love when a guy steps up with killer chops and can sum it up in 10 minutes. Cheers.
When you only play 2 guitars and the entire pedal board is a tuner, wah and TS9, it shouldn't take long! Some of these rundowns the guys have like 15 guitars on stage, a dozen pedals and some rack gear.
He's such a humble kid, and a ferocious talent I really like him.
I don't have many pedals, but I swear I think I have 1 more than him lol.....I love it. His old man's amp, a tube screamer, wah, and a tuner. 3 nce guitars and tons of God given talent. Compared to some of these episodes showing an artist guitar tech going thru the giant racks, 4 foot wide pedal boards, etc....Marcus has much closer to what us couch players keep at the house. So young, but so talented. Much admiration.....
I love this guy, such humility, you can tell his Momma raised him right. Don't change Marcus.
Man this kid has “THE vibe”.
John has this great way of being knowledgable without patronising or interrupting.
Man this is a trip. The way he's dressed, I expected him to have some type of cowboy boot on not red vans LOL
Awesome band. Very much worth a listen.
I love watching rig run downs for bands I don't know or guys like this who don't play the way I do. I find I always learn something new from their approach that I would never have even considered. Plus I get to find new bands to check out: bonus!
i remember this kid from norms guitars
hahahaha true!!!
Incredible talent
I remember him from Breaking Bad when he was in love with Lydia and shot a little kid. I didn't know that he could wail like that though. LOL!
haven't stopped listening to his music since.
terrible interview
This kid can play it all!! He plays blues as well or better than all the blues legends!! Muddy Waters is smiling from above every time this kid plays!!!
who would believe this kid is 21 he already looks and talks like a bluesman well beyond his years. I can't wait to see what more he has in store.
Please stop saying “bluesman.”
@@johnqpublic2718 This kind of freaks me out.
I went up in my attic during a thunder storm and while looking out the window, I said "Bluesman" 3 times.
Nothing happened.
I kind of feel ripped-off....
All you need to is listen to the intro of Jealous Man and you know this kid is one of the greatest players around.
A simple rig with a great sound , his voice is something else too ! Onwards and upwards for this guy 👍
Agreed , his voice is very cool .
Saw Marcus recently with this setup and tone was wonderful. Of course he's a player and would sound great through anything.
"i was using my 62' grandfather guitar" how cool is that
No matter what I’m going through, Bohlinger’s mood and vibe just makes me feel better. Love this rundown too
I was pleasantly surprised by this rig rundown! good shit, man.
Seriously the best band I've heard in a long time.
This dude brings back the OG 🔥💯
Just watched his 2022 RR. Now that I rewatched this one, I think this was where I first heard of Marcus. Thanks again PG!
He is amazing live. Super nice guy too!
His acoustic set and his voice is over the top pure southern velvet comfort -plus he drank like me so hes an automatic brother.
Do I hear another Derek Trucks coming up? This guy plays way beyond his years, I will definitely be delving into his music.
Reminds me of a young Warren Haynes
@@wittvonwitt4403 Not without reason, he said his favorite musician is Warren Haynes.
CJSchecter96 trucks herring and haynes had a kid
@@wittvonwitt4403 Warren Haynes produced one of his albums.
I highly highly highly recommend seeing the Marcus King Band live. They are a band that will blow you away. From the killer horn section, to the groovy keyboard playing, to the in-the-pocket drumming, to the tasty bass playing, to Marcus's killer godly guitar playing in vocals, they will rock your frickin socks off. Every👏single👏time👏
Best sounding les paul I have ever heard
the tone from the goldtop is to die for
such a beautiful tone
first ive heard of him def gomna check out his stuff now, great tone! i love how he uses the tubescreamer with the super.
New drinking game.... take a shot every time one of them says "man"....
Two shots when one of them says, "cool."
Sounds like someone has a death wish man!
I saw Marcus King perform here in Leeds, UK on Friday. His last name is absolutely 110% fitting to his talent.
I was at the Louisville Ky gig.....HUGE SOUND!!!
Thanks again Rig Rundown for introducing me to an artist I had not heard of. I checked out some of his tunes and he is a killer guitar player and really great singer too.
HOT SNAKES RIG RUNDOWN PLZ!
Vintage Vox and Marshall wonderment to be had!
Very humble young man ! Plays from his soul !
All of the people with Premier Guitar are great, but I always love the John Bohlinger rig rundowns the most.
MK IS THE REAL DEAL, WITH A VERY UNIQUE STYLE AND SOUND. BLESS THIS DUDE MAN.
This kid is a living legend..
I agree
He is indeed!
Hes gonna be up there with the greatest
I was prepared to make a snarky comment when I saw this on RUclips. Then I watched and listened. This young man is talented with a uniquely original sound. Best of all. he's an extremely humble guy about it. Oh btw, I happen to like Orange amps too!
1. i've been looking for a hat like that for years
2. really good idea to use the TS as an attenuator!!!
Nice clean simple rig!!!
I swapped a Big D Varitone switch into my Gibson Lucille so I actually use it now. Highly recommend it.
Marcus King has an amazing voice as well. Sings with a lot of feeling and soul. Check out his band playing "Rita is Gone" in Jam in the Van. Incredible talent.
Seeing this and some recent videos after this was published he is the next best artist to big old C.D. Charlie Daniels.🙏God rest his soul. Put a fiddle in that good ol boys hand. Can't wait to see him in person
Nice guitar!! I have a 355Lucille, pretty much the same, but with No Fholes.
Love mine
Paints quite a picture. Grandpa’s 345 and Super when he was ten years old. On ten no doubt. And lived to tell about it.
You keep it simple and it is always better!
Proves you don't need a ton of pedals to be a monster guitar player
I mean Hendrix was Hendrix with 2-4 pedals
The best use of pedals is to mimic the feel of loud guitar when the venue is too small to get loud.
It's not the arrow
No it doesn't--it proves that you don't need a ton of pedals to play this style of music. You're not going to play math rock with this rig.
I get it, it's easy to hate on or assume everyone with more than 5 pedals is a hack player or the band sucks but just goes to show that this criticism is offered by people with a limited scope of music. I mean by your logic all worship music guitar players are hacks. I mean nothing gets you closer to God than every Strymon pedal ever made, right?
@@warbutters The best use of pedals is whatever the player decides is the best use of pedals. I mean, if your opinion were true then only maybe 2 or 3 types of pedals would even exist.
I've been doing the same thing with the tubescreamer for years, works great for tone. Run a Twin and a Super Lead and just back of the TS vol so your ears don't bleed. :D
Cool man, man cool, that’s cool man, cool, cool,.., man that’s cool. Lol, love Marcus love his dad sure enough fine guitar playing!
Great great great man!
This kid rips..... I'm old enough to have seen Duane play three times before he passed.....he was my inspiration to learn how to play guitar..... Dickie too
The man!!
Oh wow im from Charlottesville..never heard of those guitars!
great video guys please update asap!
The 'evil genius' behind the cabinetry and the tooled leather-look vinyl covering on the Homestead amp/cabinet is a fellow named Ken Jones.
What a nice kid,...such a talent.
Marcus 💙🙏
At 75 thousand views and counting I'd say Bollinger is doing a good job... Marcus is a giant of blues jazz n soul....
Pretty sure they're tuning in for the guitarist...c'mon
Cool guy. And a sweet sound. Dwayne Allman left quite a legacy
I went to see Marcus king on Thursday, and he most certainly didn't stick to one guitar all night, started with a firebird then a les Paul then a 345 then a 345 sideways trem, then a tele..... in the first six songs 😁
He’s been given many free guitars since this video was made.
@@Peter-ff1tp he's bloody good, I decided to pop and see some guitarists this year (lockdown no gigs) and managed to get Marcus King Billy Strings and Eric Gales all on the same day🙂
I had a 1975 Les Paul standard. They are extremely heavy. 'Cinder block' is a good way to talk about the weight of those years. Mine had a really nice tone and wonderful sustain BUT it was too heavy to play for any length of time.
It was said when Marcus was younger he wanted his band to be a "soul-influenced psychedelic Southern rock" band and let me tell yall: the MKB achieved that
Lovely.
Super cool dude 😎
I like Marcus! That's good people
very cool.
very cool, man. very cool. killer. verry cool
Whoa, last time I saw this guy he was playing at Norm's!
cool maaaan , really cool man , cool
hey maan, cool maaan! man!
ohh cool, cool man, thats cool, very cool !!
MPHC88 man man man man man man man man man!
Comes off like a narc.
Hell of a guitar player though :-)
Jeez John...had you been partying before this interview/rig rundown? You should have asked him if the Tube Screamer effect was going to both amps. It appears that way, but might not be obvious to everybody! Marcus certainly makes the most of a minimalist rig...
I love my 78 Custom pancake.
He's a great kid too. Never heard him give a bad interview. He's really excited and thankful to be where he's at.
a true southern rocker
I've got that TS9 tube screamer.
That's no Gibson Martin hybrid. It's the Roy Smeck model from way back when. Used to be played Hawaiian style. Gibson reissued it as the Jackson Brown model. Very deep body.
YEAH!!!.....COOL MAN
Carter Vintage Shirt. I dig it.
MK is my new guitar hero!
He's gonna take me the promise land.
Needs to over-wrap the strings on the bridge to go full Duane...
You've got to do one of these on Phil Keaggy sometime.
John makes me laugh every time
Cool, Very Cool, Cool... Very Cool Man...
dude has chops
"Duane Allaman fan". You are Duane Allman incarnate!
I'm lovin' the minimal setup, but can somebody tell me what's the constant buzzsaw noise I'm hearing in the background? Is it the super-reverb ground noise? Are the lights?
Hey, do Real Estate when they come to Nashville next month. They've got some crazy sounds popping off right now
Great player and love the gear, the interviewer?
You know I am comming, when you hear me humming ... bzzzzzzzzz
Dude makes it happen
great video, needs a gate :)
the kid is just a little baby lol. good talent. this southern rock resurgence is refreshing and beats the hell out of all modern music crap.
Marcus King deserves more that 10 mins.!
That's always been my preference .... get the amp up loud and let the guitar talk. Lower volumes make me more dependent on preamp distortion or pedal distortion. I love power amp distortion. That is where tone meets gain and then you can add preamp or pedal distortion for enhancement and use your guitar's volume to step on the gas or to play something cool and cleaner..
So, what's the acoustic then? beautiful pine top on that one!
he is so cool, i want to adopt him,,,,,,,, if i had a son,
Super Reverb on 10 OMFG YES
what a simple setup
