I had my 2nd son at home in 1989, partially because we had no insurance. We paid $150 for the midwife's birthing kit and traded her $150 worth of haircuts from my husband the barber for a grand total of $300! Best money I ever spent! High cost of basic medical care is terrible burden for most US families 😔 Government should be Embarrassed 😳

wow. I had both my preemies (3 years apart) at Vanderbilt in Nashville. Each of their bills were close to 1/2 a million dollars each. (Not including the 50 mile ambulance ride for one ... or the emergency life flight on a blackhawk helicopter for the other!) Good job we were covered on military insurance because hubby was active duty. We only had to pay for meals I think. $12 a day???? I don't know how civilians do it, especially when there are complications.

@@villamathilda6984 I’ve recently gone back to work after being home with my son for 20 months. With pay from my job and government. Now my son is in preschool, for which I pay around $100 a month. That includes lunch and snacks for him. I have lived in the US as a student but I could not see myself living there now as a single mother.

Lydia, even less than half way through this, I have to pause and give you a thumbs up and kudos. It sounds as though the years before we get to see the beautiful you offering advice, your life was a financial sh** storm, and I am SO glad you and your husband pulled together as a team and are over the hump. I know day-to-day life is still a series of challenges (isn't that true for us all?) but I have to say, you present reality with such grace! I hope you are imminently successful and are blessed with more abundance than you ever imagined possible. - SE

We drive super economical cars. We work in town. We shop locally. We take our lunch and coffee to work. We sold things we are no longer needing. We do our own yard, home and car maintenance. I stopped going to the nail salon. I do my own mani pedis. I do them for my mother and sisters also. My husband cuts and colors my hair.

You are such an inspiration. I too was in a very bad financial situation, and managed to survive. I was a working single mother of three, with no child support, then my youngest at 16 presented me with a grandson. She had also been victim to the war on drugs, she passed away. My grandson is disabled and required a lifetime of care. My small income barely made it through the month, there was a time I had to calculate how much laundry detergent to get me by, not to mention gas to get to work. Whatever I read about money management, I was already doing. I cashed in my retirement accounts, negotiated with credit cards, etc. But eventually I was able to get out of debt, and buy a house. I raised my grandson in a house. That was my goal for all my children. It’s just that the older ones grew up too fast! When he grew up and moved on to living with another relative, I sold my house, moved into a senior subsidized apartment. It took me a lifetime of challenges, but I am finally debt free. I have an investment savings account, and keep two credit cards for emergencies. I use one only for household spending (cat food and litter, it gets delivered right to my door), I pay it off each month.... no interest. The other is used only for gas, occasional eating out, etc. It also gets paid off every month. They each accumulate points, so that is a plus. I mentioned emergencies, I had to use them twice. When my daughter passed away, I had to search in my file box for the card and activate it, and go to the bank for cash. Do you know they won’t sell you a cemetery plot on a credit card?! I had insurance which covered the expenses, just not fast enough. Years later, my ex-husband, the one who never paid child support or had any contact with the kids until a few years ago.... died! Guess who had to pull out that otherwise unused credit card for the cremation expenses..... boy do they itemize everything! I had not seen or had contact with this man in 45 years! Fortunately one of his relatives reimbursed me.
I live only on my social security, but I am finally debt free, and have been for over 10 years. I am very cautious of my spending.
Your video brought back memories, not bad ones, survival ones. I am happier than ever. Thank you for allowing me to share.

Thanks again. I told you already I cleared £32000 of my own debt of credit cards. Whilst I was responsible for the payments I also thought I needed to justify why it was so high to my family and friends. I helped out family members as I was the only one with a salary. Watching your channel helped me focus properly. In the UK we get deals sometimes where a card gives interest free for a period. I moved all my debts onto 3 cards offering interest free for 36 months Then I worked out much I would need to pay before the free period ended. As each one ended I put that payment onto the next. A little like your Dave Ramsey. I did it!,, salary end of October sees final payments, the interest free ends in March 2021. I really can’t thank you enough. You are very special. 🥰🥰🥰

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that ignorance isn’t bliss. Self awareness leads to a feeling of security. This goes for money/budget. It also goes for a lot of other areas of my life. My health/weight, friends/family, etc. As much as my default can be to ignore the problem, the problem just doesn’t go away. But when I take the time to come up with a plan and work that plan, in the end I feel better having control over that part of my life.

I had a stroke at 49. My part was 20%. Just ICU was $86,000. The hospital would not budge at all on my 20%. Period. They ended up taking me to court and won, and I appealed that and got it dismissed. But still, my part ruined my finances. Thank God I didn't lose my house because my house payment is less than a one bedroom apt in my area. I so understand a lot of this, but I'm fuzzy about how you made the change, because what you've said about extra income around the 10:00 is unclear. I wish you had just a written list somewhere showing us how this works. sigh.

Dave Ramsey's $1k baby emergency fund was set up 20 to 25 years ago when a grand went further. I agree with your 2 to 3 month baby emergency fund. At least when something like covid hits you can size up situation and be able to do something radical (like move quick into parent's basement) before all hell breaks loose.

If we had not prepared and fanatically as we had...we would have been up the creek. Instead, it was a blessing. We decided that I would stay home. That's where my heart is and he found a good job. Regarding insurance payment after an accident, there is usually a cap on medical per accident which typically is $100,000. My daughters boyfriend recently was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident which was not his fault. He had ambulance to ER, #1 ER, life flight to larger hospital, #2 ER, many days in ICU, more days in regular hospital room and physical therapy. He will never be 100% again but at least he's alive and has no brain injury or paralysis. The $100,000 was a drop in the bucket and the guy that hit him has been liquidating his assets so no chance of anything being left by the time a lawsuit could be heard (no court during the pandemic). The last I heard he'd only received billings from #2 hospital and that was in the $200,000+ range. Life flight generally is on the plus side of $16,000. I keep reminding him to be thankful he's alive and that bankruptcy is an option that he might have to consider. This is a basic fact of life in the USA. A huge percentage of bankruptcies are the direct result of medical expenses whether from illnesses or accidents.

I’ve just started the debt snowball. So far I’ve paid off about 7 debts. I’m now trying to work on making a budget. Do you have any advice on making budgets for beginners?

We paid off $45 with one income. My husband was like why are you worried about it now? Bc he was in College at the time. I was like I want it gone. We have $25k left. Some of it was car tho.

Great Video! Except for rent, we are debt free! He will retire in a few years, we are putting money away to pay cash for a home if we ever want too. I like you struggled for many years, I finally got everything paid off and it feels good.

Was the person who hit you uninsured? I would think at least their insurance would cover the medical expenses at minimum or even some for pain and suffering. I also got into an accident when I was pregnant but it was my fault, that had bad financial repercussions (totalled car and no full coverage, so no money to replace car) but thankfully noone was hurt.

In order to get someone to pay for medical expenses in an accident like this you have to go through subrogation, which means your insurance company sues their insurance company. It took two FULL YEARS to get any claims paid.

Yes, I hear ya. I also had another accident where I did get hurt (the other driver's fault), I remember it took a long time to get my medical bills paid, I kept getting annoying calls.

If you have credit cards in a collections agency that won’t leave you alone, you can negotiate with them! Google this! Do it yourself or if you have a close person that is a good negotiator ask for their help!

Remember when on the Two and a half Men show Allen blow up his last alimony check? I wanted to do that with my husbands Sallie Mae student loans!!!! Hahhaha! Also felt great when I paid off our new van early and got that title in the mail🤗 Then I wanted to get another check blown up when he completed paying child support through the state. In between we have no credit cards of any kind. We are almost finished with his car not in a few months. I would like to do some projects around the house and put in extra payments to our mortgage. Our goal is to make extra payments to pay less to interest. Overall paying the mortgage off early. It is like a snowball effect.

I have no debt except my mortgage and was planning to pay it down fast but now we have covid. Im grateful i still have a job but its uncertain. My income covers majority of the household expenses and my husband is recovering from a stroke in jan 2020. I have 6 mths expenses saved up. Should i build up my emergency funds to 12 mths and pausing on paying down mortgage? Or pay down mortgage aggressive and be done in 2 years? Dave ramsey says when there is a major life event, hit pause then continue later. Its very logical but why do i have this constant nagging feeling to clear my mortgage instead!? I need advise.

It's such a shame that your insurance didn't pay more for you. I live in Florida and paid $200 to have my baby with insurance which was a blessing!

this has definitly helped me, We currently bring in $60k together. and we have $30,000 in debt not including our mortgage, (198k) and car title ($475). Its very hard, were paying $1000 a month in just credit cards, its very hard, very lol, and emotionally draining since we have two small kids who are wanting to go out, dieny, waterparks, and eat ALOT lol. trying to juggle everything. i hope we can stay on pace. definitly trying to not go out as much or buy stuff i want :/

In the uk its unbelievable that having a baby cost €11000.
It doesnt matter your income if your working or not we all get the same care and any tests, visits ,surgery or blood test or having a baby costs nothing.
