Reminds me of a recent graphic novel for children I read called Tiger and Nightmare. A friendly bedtime monster defends Little Tiger from nightmarish things in return for food (She loves curry, just like her friend.) and playing games until bedtime. This goes on until a Wendigo style nightmare comes along that even Monster cannot defeat. The ultimate solution is that Monster and Tiger end up fighting nightmares together and sleeping peacefully every night.
