    In regards to the comment of “something going on with Brian’s lead vocals” for the mono copies, much of it could have to do with the fact that many of the lead vocals that were double tracked for the mono version were changed to single track vocals on the stereo remaster, due to many of the original multi-tracks being lost. It’s a subtle change, but it makes the vocals come across much differently on the stereo version

    I really appreciate you making this comparison. I just discovered Pet Sounds about 2 weeks ago. It has completely changed my perception of music. I've already purchased 24bit FLAC and today I purchased the 2017 Analog Productions Stereo Pressing. I agree with you that the stereo mix is better - there are a lot of things going on on that album. I love this album enough to buy every pressing but I don't have the time to. When you talked though I realized that you got it and I trusted your judgement.

    I have the 2016 stereo pressing that I purchased from my local record store. I originally wanted the oldest pressing possible because I love to collect old copies of some of my favorite classic rock albums, but after watching this, I’m sorta glad I didn’t spend $300+ just to have an original copy of Pet Sounds

    Great comparisons as always! Id love to hear your thoughts on the best Genesis pressings, for either Foxtrot or Selling England. Some more Pink Floyd like DSotM or WYWH would also be great! Linking your videos on forums is a great way to slow down confused discussions, really clear and concise about what sounds best and why.

    Please consider reviewing the Beach Boys' "Sunflower" album. While maybe not the sales equivalent of others you HAVE reviewed, it is an awesome album creatively and sonically (read the liner notes). Several critics considered it the best post-Pet Sounds album the group ever did.
    [P.S. You seem like a bit of a fan of the group, per your comments of "mono vs. stereo" and the "trance" comment. The engineering on Sunflower was exemplary, by the legendary Stephen W. Desper. It would be fun to hear your experience hearing it on your superb system.]
    [P.S.S. - " 'He was a genius engineer. Oh my God he was,' said Brian Wilson, when I recently asked him about Stephen W. Desper." -- Alan Boyd, 2002.]

    My problem with the stereo versions that came out on the pet sounds box was the incorrect vocal put on the bridge of wouldn't it be nice. On those versions Brian is singling it, but the original had Mike singing the bridge. Do these chosen favorite stereo issues have the correct version of the vocals?

  • @JangleRadio365
    @JangleRadio365 6 лет назад +30

    Thanks for all the comparisons because there's so many reissues of this album. The mono mix is muddled because Brian Wilson did so much bouncing between 3, 4 and 8 multi-track recorders and then mixing it all down to mono trying to equal Phil Spector's huge productions. And Capitol's 60's mastering engineers did no favors with his master tapes. The stereo remix is so much better. It's funny that the Duophonic LP is going way up in price with Beach Boys collectors though it sounds terrible. Have you checked out the early-mid 1980's green Capitol budget label reissue? Many on the Steve Hoffman forum love that pressing, and it was the pressing that made me a fan of this album.

      I'm sure that by the time of Pet Sounds they had 8 track.

    • @Andres-fh3em
      @Andres-fh3em 2 года назад

      @@horowizard Probably a very late response but yes, Pet Sounds was recorded in different studios (Gold Star, Western, Sunset Sound, etc) using different machines, including 3, 4 and 8 tracks. There was a lot of generations of tape being made for overdubs and even some vocal takes were recorded directly into the master mono tape, so to make the stereo mix there was a loss like 2% of the vocals from the album.

    In my opinion, the 1972 Artisan version that came with Carl and the passions is the most natural copy available, followed by the 1980's Green label budget priced version. Regarding the CD version, the stereo mix that came as part of the Pet Sounds boxed set sounds most natural. Every other Stereo version released since the 1996 box set had some sort of digitization that sticks out like a sore thumb, and that includes the 45 RPM vinyl editions.

    I'm curious - How did you come to the conclusion that there's some digitization in the stereo mix because they went to the original multi-track tapes? Analogue Productions, unless specifically indicating otherwise, works with purely analog sources and produces AAA for their vinyl releases. (When they do a digitally sourced album on vinyl, such as Nils Lofgren's Acoustic Live, they state that in their copy).

    • @TheInGroove
      @TheInGroove  5 лет назад +1

      On The Beach Boys reissues they state that they were created from the best available sources. Also no stereo master was ever done for this album until the 90’s for the pet sound box set. That was done with Brian Wilson digitally.

      This is from Wiki lifted from the box set liner notes. I Don't think it's possible to have an analog cut of this in stereo. There would be no way to sync the multitrack stems.
      "Pet Sounds was first released in 1966 in monaural and duophonic formats.[5] Overseen by Brian Wilson and engineered by Mark Linett, the set includes the first stereo mix of Pet Sounds. These new mixes were permitted by the survival of the original Pet Sounds multitrack tapes. Advances in recording technology allowed the compilers to digitally sync multi-track stems that had been ping-ponged numerous times prior to their final mono mixdown.[5]
      The new mixes created for the box set were made in January-February 1996.[6] Linett wrote: "In mixing Pet Sounds in stereo, every attempt was made to duplicate the feel and sound of the original mono mixes. Vocal and instrumental parts that Brian left off the record in 1966 were noted and duplicated, as were the fades."[5] To this end, a Scully model 280 4-track was used to transfer the analog reels to digital multi-tracks - the same model used for Pet Sounds. The mix was then processed through an original tube console from United Western Recorders in the 1960s.[5]
      Some exceptions remain, and so the stereo mix of Pet Sounds does contain some differences from the original mono mix. Among them, alternate vocal parts used for the bridge of "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and the end of "God Only Knows" due to the original tracks no longer existing. "You Still Believe in Me" features a single tracked vocal instead of the doubled vocal of the original due to a missing tape.[5] In the mono version, chatter can be heard buried in various tracks; instances of them were omitted from the stereo version at Brian's request.[5]"@@jeffbellin8224

I really liked the 2012 Mark Linett stereo CD too. Many prefer Pet Sounds on mono, but my pick is stereo. I bought Pet Sounds when I was 15 and I didn't like it besides the big hits ("Wouldn't It Be Nice" "Sloop John B."). It was so different from the Beach Boys usual surfing, hot rods and girls songs. So I sold it off (which was dumb because it was a Reprise pressing). But in the mid 80's when I was in my 20's I found a Capitol reissue cheap in a discount bin, so I bought it again. After hearing it from a young adult's perspective (and on a good stereo) I finally understood what Brian Wilson had created with Pet Sounds. It's mostly an album about growing up from your teenage years to an adult. Brian was only 22 when he made it, and that's even more impressive.

But when the CD came out in stereo in 1996 30 years later, I was absolutely floored. It's like a whole new album was waiting to be heard. The liner said that the reason it was only released in moni was because the album existed on different tapes, making it hard it not impossible for a stereo release. That problem was overcome with digital mastering. You can thank CD technology for this. Whatever the results, the job was excellent. I listen to it practically all the time.

      Fuz Japanese pressings tend to be on the bright side with thinner bass. The problem with ITCOTCK is that the tapes were lost after the first few pressings so everything after 69 sounds mostly terrible. Until 2009 I think when they were found again and made into digital and then pressed on vinyl again. Thats why the 2010 issue sounds so good in general. If you want good sound for little money thats the place to look. If you want the best sound you will have to pay a lot for an old original which might or might not be in your desired condition.

    I have the AP 45rpm Mono and I found it to be really really good. I have one of the HDCDs that include the mono and stereo mixes and on that the mono is thin and quiet so I prefer to listen to the stereo. So I guess it's format dependent for me.

    What about the $18-22 Stereo and Mono LP's of Pet Sounds they still have in stock in Record stores/Amazon? The ones that have an Anniversary sticker on the cover. I've read some have pressing defects, I have the Stereo one, but I don't have a thousand dollar system or any mint 90's or 00's Pet Sounds represses to compare it with

    Thanks for the in-depth reviews. Love this choice of album, too. Unlike David, below, I am a huge BW / BB fan of over 50 years. So I especially dig what you are saying. Have you done "Sunflower" yet? Probably my favorite overall and sonically one of their best, although I haven't compared various versions. What are your tables/arms/cartridges? And what are you using for speakers?

    What a great video. Finally someone who has a clue who and has done the detailed comparison. Not just a handle on a forum. An actual person who has done methodical side by side testing. AND has the guts to choose a STEREO version as the winner! Love it. I had to return an expensive “Near Mint” Pet Sounds 1966 Mono vinyl LP on eBay today - it was just unlistenable (yes after cleaning) with crackle throughout and muffled vocals. This video told me exactly what I needed to know for what to buy. THANK YOU!!

    The stereo version is great if you love fake digital reverb effects and hearing vocals that are out of sync with the backing tracks. #NotMyPetSounds

    Look what it takes to make Vinyl sound decent. LOL I love my CD's. No distortion caused by a rock scraping plastic.

      @@TheInGroove Mike I know this video is 6 years old, but I'm thinking of getting a 1st UK stereo & mono pressing. Do you have any experience with those?

    I have tried to listen to this Album numerous times and have failed to see why people think it's so good. I my opinion, overrated.

      If you listen to just the instrumental bed behind the lyrics you can begin to appreciate the overall complexity and yet simple beauty of the PS project. That's really what it was, a project, a journey that Brian and his lyricist set out on, eventually resulting in a "record album." ruclips.net/video/kak2x0j_m8I/видео.html

      I like what another person said, regarding this "album" - "Not to start a debate, but when I got into this album and the box set, I found it much more satisfying than Sgt. Pepper, with all its overdubs and edits. Not that it isn't a work of genius as well, but it doesn't have the magic of 20+ people all playing live in a room, well-rehearsed, with complex music produced and arranged by the songwriter. I think the fact that the Beatles used George Martin while Brian made all the decisions himself made a difference. I'm not trying to slag off the Beatles, but this is why the best Beach Boys material is more satisfying to me. The organic approach." (Ben Culture)
