I never got the chance to shop there before it closed. I feel I missed out. I'm actually thinking about visiting a few malls like the Alton mall, just to get footage of it while its open. And when it inevitably closes, I could go back and see the aftermath. Would probably be years before I could do that, but that would be amazing, and it doesn't take much effort to film while it's open.
My first memories of being at a mall are from here. My first visit with Santa was here. I remember eating at the diner inside Walgreens and the restaurant on the 4th floor of Stix/Dillard’s with my mother and grandmother. My first computer came from the Sears at Jamestown. It’s hard to believe it’s gone, but then again it’s hard to believe how different malls are in our culture right now.
Great video! I grew up at this mall and visited it last in 2014 before it closed. They just had another fire on April 19, 2023 and they're hoping to fasttrack the demolition because it was so dangerous for the 2 firefighters that were hospitalized. I'll be driving by soon for one last dash cam video from the street and once it's finally demolished. Update: Got a little footage of demo and will check back from time to time.
Sad to see... I remember when this opened (am 64). It went the way of River Roads, Northland, and Northwest Plaza. Thanks for exploring, recording, and uploading. Good tunes.. who is it?
UPDATE: Last Friday, June 12th, 2 separate fires were set in different parts of the mall at the same time. Firefighters discovered "large piles of furniture" on fire in the old Dillards and Macy's stores, the Black Jack Fire Protection District said. Fortunately, the fire under control within an hour, though I do not know how much damage was actually done. Luckily this didn't happen while we were exploring. Stay safe out there
Yea, it was pretty surreal being there. Only problem is we had to leave early otherwise we'd get rained out. Also realized I have a serious problem with filming in low light. I resorted to using my phone because that performed the best. I have a new camera on order and should be here this Thursday. Also the wind was so bad I could only have the drone up for like 5 minutes before I couldn't control it. I'll definitely be going back soon for a proper reshoot. I really wanna do this place justice. It's really incredible.
A ton of memories at that mall. I worked at JW (Jeans West) from 87-90. Before that my mom and dad took me to see Star Wars in 1977. Dad would always hang out at The Ground Round while Mom did her shopping and I hung out at the Camolot record Store and arcade playing Astroids. While I was working at JW a attractive girl that worked at Camolot music took me to a Don Henley concert. Wish there was a way to get in contact with her and the manager of Camolot music. I just can't remeber their names.
My dad took me to the midnight Brisinger release-party (and midnight Eragon movie release) there and my friends and I used to play D&D there in the food-court. Did y'all need a permit to visit or does anyone care anymore? With the quarantine going on I'd love to explore it and snap a few pics for the boys.
Amazing how far it's deteriorated in just 7 years. Dead malls are an American phenomenon. There's a whole website devoted to them (deadmalls.com/). Combination of big box stores and internet sales killed them. If you grew up during the Mall Era (approx. 1970 - 2010) it's hard to believe they could die off. But that's what's happening. The fast decay we see in this video is a tribute to the way malls were built - fast and cheap. Put up walls and a roof quickly, get the merchandise in, sell it quickly. Older municipal architecture was built to last, and to look solid for decades. Go back further and the buildings are even more durable. The Pantheon in Rome was built in 120 AD, and is still attracts visitors today, 1900 years later. But this mall looks ready to collapse after less than a decade of neglect.
I remember shopping there at Christmas, and going to seeing movies at the theater.........really sad to see this mess, why they haven't just demolished it already is beyond me
Their maintenance guy lied on his resume. I bet that place will never be torn down. At least i know where to go if I'm homeless. Looks like all I need is a screwdriver.
Wow, small world. No, we didn't. I'm guessing he's friendly enough? I do plan on going back very soon. Got a new light today and a camera coming in the mail this Thursday so I can do a proper shoot. I'll get better drone footage. Was way too windy and we nearly got caught in a downpour while we were inside.
@@lofiurbex2511 Drone footage is still pretty good for those high-speed runs inside. The homeless dude spooked my friend at first but was fairly amicable. He kept to himself... actually I never saw or heard him again after that encounter; had the place to myself for a long while. I left around noon and swung back around a few hours later, possibly around the time you were there as it was clouding over, but the red car at 1:39 wasn't there when I had left so I aborted. Got out of town before the rain hit.
@@jonrev Its funny actually, we were beginning to give up after seeing all the doors welded up. But someone on a skateboard came by and and ended up giving us a lift to the entrance so we could get in. Real nice guy, hope he finds this video some day.
huge Place lot of money when in the building this Wasteland. clean up the debris in the center of this mall board up the store fronts put in a few little ramps for skateboarders and have fun. just stay away from the black mold of course LOL
Something about this is so heartbreaking. I spent so much time there.

I’m heartbroken by that... Nice video, thought.
Lived a mile away sad to see what has happened in that neighborhood.
Sorry to see and hear alot of st.louis is like that born and raised in St. louis
I wouldn't be walking through that mold pit without at least a mask...
Never thought I would see this in my life time. I remember a time before malls. So sad

Nice backstory on the video, great drone shots! (also that place is huge there could be so much cool stuff left behind, a lot of history)

The HVAC equipment is all stripped for parts. Damn. it doesn't look like a single one was intact.
Like Rotting Acres, but turned up to eleven. The mold's apparently so bad you need a breathing apparatus in parts.
my first bookstore job was at walden there, late 70s.
I can see that water and the scumbag Vandals have invaded the old Mall. Getting rich quick does not pay off every time.

i used to work there. It is sad to see it like that!
Hard to be optimistic since so many malls are in trouble.
So many indeed!.
It’s almost like the general population is being killed off And we just don’t realize it.
great drone videos. what kind do you use? I was wanting to get some sky view videos of my property but not sure if it is worth it
Geez I wonder what could have made the Mall fail? Lets think about it. Oh I know just can't say it.
Law abiding citizens?
Can't say Amazon or Walmart?

demolishing takes more money than just letting it rot, unfortunately
Part of my childhood 😢

wonder what they are going to put there once its demoed.....
This used to be the only Place in STL to get Chik-fil-a....
Looks like another Rolling Acres
Wow that looks just as awful as Northridge
I miss that mall wish they'd make up there mind on what there gonna do with it

Been there a hundred times!
My 15 yr old baby pics were done here and so was my 1st tattoo
They closed in 2013, not 2008. But cool video

OMG.
What caused the failure of this mall?
I think people just started favoring online shopping

Yeah but only with the Covid crap? It (e-commerce or online retail) is only 20% of all retail sales
