  • The longer this jobs goes the more I realize I under estimated the size of this dam along with the amount of dirt to be moved. But, that won’t stop the progress. Let’s get this monster built…

    Great Message as usual. I saw my dad die in July and come back to life. When we talked about it I said that isn't hoping, that is Blessed Assurance! He got to see the table and Angels on a White Horse! He woke up saying how clean he was. I told him it's because he was in God's Presence! What a friend we have in Jesus!

    If it's of any help, the contractor I used to work for used a 300ft threshold. If the dirt had to move less than 300ft he'd push with the dozer. If it had to move farther than 300ft, he would pick it up with a pan and cart it over to dump. Those numbers might not work the same for you, but the principle should.

    Well after searching around, here's a great short video I came across on how you do a dam or pond just with your dozer. Working it from inside out. Much much more efficient and time and money saving than hauling dirt around. Maybe a second dozer might come in handy but it's not that of a big deal.
    Here's the link to that video clip :-

    You had mentioned efficiency over this series of videos. I also watch a few other channels that build ponds amongst other things. If I recall correctly, Mike over at Dirt Perfect talked about the difference between using the excavator and truck verses using the bulldozer. Sometimes it was better using the dozer, other times it was not. So it may be worth a little time determining how much dirt can be moved with each method. One may be considerable more efficient than the other within a certain distance. Not claiming to be an expert, or an amateur, just giving food for thought.

    Just some observations and I hope you dont mind. After watching both Chris and Mike for years it looks to me like you under use your dozer for dirt moving. You mentioned people said bigger equipment but you could do like Chris does and just up the size of your excavator bucket and you will up production without the cost of a whole new machine.

    • @tristardiggin
      @tristardiggin  11 месяцев назад

    Efficiency is always about minimizing motion. In dirt moving that means handling dirt as few times as possible and moving it in as straight of a path as possible. Efficiency is money saved because as you know, time is money. Also not criticizing in a negative way but something as simple as getting full bucket fulls with the excavator every pass is a really simple way to increase production. May not seem like much but all of those small amounts added together at the end of the day make a large sum. Sam, love you brother, pray for you often and wish I could be a help to you.

    Thank you in showing a great video again. Also may God Bless you for bringing the word in such a great way here in your video.
    On building dams and ponds. You just need your faithfull dozer and maybe an excavator. The dozer just push all the dirt from the inside to the sides just where you want it. People underestimate the workforce of a dozer in displacing dirt from one point to another. You can do the damwalls in layers by working it flat and compact it with your roler and then move the next pile of dirt from inside to form the next stage of a layer on top of the previous one.
    I'm not in this industry but worked as an earthmoving mechanic on these machines and saw how these earthmoving construction companies do this farm dams and ponds just with a dozer.
    Hope it will be of great assistance to you.

    Retired estimator here. My past motto was calculate amount of dirt 3 times, then average of the 3 calculations. Then estimate time on equipment. I used going price per yard of cut and fill, then going price per hour on equipment. Then compared the 2 methods. I will guess you was off because of not calculating the fill properly. The dam is extra wide you had plenty of dirt to cut and made the dam wider than necessary. I hope this wasnt too confusing. Anyways your getting it done and it will be a good pond. And good lessons learned

    • @tristardiggin
      @tristardiggin  Год назад

      Thanks for the info Rick. Definitely need to spend some time learning how to estimate the dirt. I generally just do time and materials and figure how much time it will take. @tristardiggin, good ac system LOL, you may want to get a small flexible solar panel and tape it near the ceiling of the excavator. and a small wired fan to circulate air at the bottom of the cabin under your seat.

      What was I doing wrong

    • @d6c10k4
      @d6c10k4 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@tristardiggin not really wrong i guess....i come from a survey background where you set an arbitrary elevation on the bench mark then set your laser at the top of the rod and read the height off the rod directly (usually off the back of the rod). Add/subtract the rod reading from the bench elev. to get the difference. Allows you to carry an elevation wherever you need on the job site. Hope that's not too confusing. Didn't mean to be too critical oof your method if it works for you.

    I live super close to you and see you on the road frequently and just found your channel. Just a farmer not a dirt work man but built my first pond last fall and am currently dredging my 3 acre pond, totally felt your comment about respecting the people that move big amounts of dirt is an art to see how to lay it all out. I don't have figured out as well but enjoying seeing how you tackle it, and see little things to improve just watching others. Pond is shaping up nicely look forward to the next one.
