There are OT jobs in the US that are called PRN (as needed) or Per Diem which are not full time that provide people with lots of flexibility. I have seen some other OT RUclipsrs who have mentioned that they work for 2-3 companies as a PRN worker and that can supply a satisfying income for them. I do not know if they have this option in Australia though. Anyway, thank you for sharing your experience! This is helpful as someone who will be starting OT school this year :)

Thank you for the advice, Jennifer! We do have contractor roles in Australia but they aren't very common or well-established in my opinion. I would love to get some insight into it from fellow Aussie OTs!

Hi Cindy! I very much agree with you about emotionally draining, especially in doing things that are more subjective. I find life skills building session (NDIS general OT role) is really challenging for me because it is so individual-based and there are no straightforward guidelines to follow and my clients always lack of motivation to work on their "goals" or do not think they need to change. I always need to think if this is going to work or not, and it is hard to know if I am doing the right thing. These uncertainties and the use of mymental energy make me feel emotionally exhausted. I am considering something like hand therapy which is more straightforward and might suit my personability better. Hope it is :) It is really good to hear your thoughts about this and feel related :)

      Hi Emma,
Thank you for sharing your experience. It really is exhausting to work with NDIS. I also felt that motivational interviewing was a big part of my role but we know we can't "motivate" a client, instead, we can only give them feedback and guidance. I hope you can find a field that suits you! :) Let me know it goes. 💕

Hi there! Thank you for the support and new subbies🥰 I have been taking a little break to sort out my life. I hope you enjoy this video nevertheless ❤ I'm curious to know what are the things you find challenging about being a OT or making you reconsider a career in OT.

@@shahana_5110 There's definitely leave entitlements like annual leave (4 weeks off), and personal/carer's leave, but it really depends on the company if they give extra days off like RDO (when you get days off for working overtime).

Hey Cindy, was wondering if you have any thoughts on which particular fields in OT are better suited for introverts? I'm an introvert like you that does best in one-to-one settings but at the same time, I'm easily drained if I have to do small talk stuff / be around a lot of people all the time.

Hi good questions! I personally found that the jobs where I see the same clients on a weekly basis, helped me feel less overwhelmed. So settings like paediatrics, mental health and community can be good options. I also recommend checking with the employer how many clients you will see per day so you can get some downtime. I also prefer a less stimulating environment since that seems to affect me too e.g. clinic vs hospital.

      Hi Julz,
I have always considered a career in design so I am considering a career where I can be creative and work with a team on a project. How about you? :)
