Ultras fuck it up but my macro is so dogshit I probably wont tech to it until 30 minutes. I'm terrible but appreciate the content. If you were a larger channel I would be less nice lol.
an scv can approximately mine enough to build another scv in 1 minute. 12s to build scv means we have 2 scvs at 12s into the game. but rough calculation means 4 scvs at 2min, 8 at 3min. and now limited by the 12s build time of 5scvs per minute, you get 13 scvs at 4minutes. but log12/log2 is 3.58. so basically a delay of 3 to 4 minutes. i definitely didnt take into account the minerals and time needed for supply depots and other buildings.
I play vs the ai alot, and each difficulty has a "unit cap", and the higher you get the more units they are alowed to make and the more frequent they will replenish the units lost.
That's not really a challenge. To put it quite simply, even my noob ass can steamroll cheater 3 AI without building workers. Just build something next to their base before they have units and they freak out, pulling the entire worker line to derp around (not even on amove, they'll derp around back and forth a lot before right clicking on the building instead of the worker). That, and their resource cheat starts really weak and scales up over time. So when you proxy early they're even worse than elite AI (since maphack makes sure they know to freak out, whereas elite AI might not notice it)
Haven't seen the full video yet, but I knew once you expressed all your concerns about being invaded against the easy AI, that you hadn't played against the easy AI in a loooong while haha! It's intended (for people like me) to be the easiest possible first-experience, for people who might not have even bothered with anything beyond the basic tutorial. After ~2mins, you start progressing at your full pace again, whereas people like me (who merely watch high-lvl matches or challenges on youtube) are still messing around, using no hotkeys, building random buildings and upgrades, setting arbitrary rally points, forgetting to create SCVs, overloading mineral lines, reading heaps of tooltips (SO many tooltips...), need wayyyy more time than that to build up even a minimal army :) Heck in my first match I thought 3 tanks, 10 marines and some marauders at 10min was too much and went back to decide if I should diversify into air units and build some starports, only to find my mineral line down to the last patch and my army getting nearly wrecked by the first AI invasion (that I hadn't scouted, of course) Puts things into perspective eh? ;) Groetjes from a fellow Dutchie! (I did still win my first game tho, IIRC thanks to the battlecruiser lol)
I just recently found your channel because of my sudden interest for this game and this has been a really great content, I still don't know how to play the game where you master your hotkeys and stuff like that, as well as the strategies but because of you I'm enjoying this game and I wanna at least practice so I can master all these controls and have my own strategy, I just wanna share and you keep it up!
The on-screen Billy 1 versus Billy 2 graphic was awesome! It would be so funny if you had on screen countdowns in your video to win ridiculous things happen.. "like salt in 3,2,1" or "terrible blink in 3,2,1" or speech bubbles for MVP units creating little stories about their triumph!
At 1:09:00 I accidentally looked at the video length and saw there are 10 minutes remaining. Never thought it would end that way. Watch out, spoiler in the subcomment!
Seeing the 10 minutes remaining, I was sad because I thought Marc will lose as I was sure there is no way he can kill all the AI's bases in 10 minutes. Boy was I wrong. What a game. Thanks so much
You have to remember the lower difficulty AI's are designed for people who havent even learned what buildings are required for what units and the hotkeys. I brought a friend in recently who had never played much of any RTS games, joined me in some 2vAI to learn, skipping the campaign till later. From that perspective this is an incredibly dense and confusing game.
You know, there's also this thing called handicap, in personnalised games. Try with 50% handicap, see where you can go! (meaning you'll fight with 50% less health) Great vid!
I've always said that Blizzard's AI (not just starcraft, but every game I've played of theirs) is designed to trick you into winning. Easy for someone who's never played the game before, Medium for a casual player, and Hard for people who've played other games in the genre (with the Insane/Cheater modes just being a quick hack to make an AI that's designed to lose be at least somewhat challenging by accident.) For myself, coming from the Age of Empires 2 world (I watch SC2 but haven't played a blizzard RTS since Warcraft 3), the difference is night and day; in AoE2 the various AI levels are designed to behave (not just approximate in difficulty) a real player of certain ELO levels. They don't perfectly mirror human behavior, but they also don't cheat even at the highest level, and have much more complex behavior than a Blizzard AI. This video really highlights how far player skill has come since the blizzard RTS days; at this stage (AoE2's AI is STILL regularly updated to this day) blizzard AI looks like it's not even trying, even on the "harder" difficulties, compared to the knowledge and muscle memory even an average pleb like myself has built up over the past 20 years. Really feels like we're at the stage where RTS is becoming a well-understood game on both an external and internal level just like physical sports, and Blizzard's AI is suck in the days of 20 years ago when most people had never even played a single round of "Sim City 2000 with guns" before.
It would be fun to see the one scv challenge but instead of only starting with one scv you can only build with one scv (maybe this also means if that scv dies you can't build anymore)
After watching for about 3 years now I've finally started to learn how to play. Currently stuck trying to beat the Very Hard AI, feeling pretty humbled after you thought you accidentally set it to very easy after smoking them lol.
This gives me the idea for another challenge. Build depot, rax with full economy and then kill 10 SCV so you get a super-early push without spending more money on depots...
Hey Marc! Very nice AI examination, it´s always nice to see how diff AI´s function in many diff games & in SC2 as well. Thank you for this content ideas, in your series.
55:49 When Marc CALLS the AI attack LESS than 3 seconds BEFORE it happens.. LEGEND! I literally do NOT play SC2 anymore but watch almost ALL of your content! Also WinterCraft and Harstem are pretty great too! WinterCraft is the BEST SC2 commentator EVER! God Bless you ALL!
11min into that Insane challenge, I was thinking that it was time for him to switch his starport to techlab and build a couple roaming banshees to roam around and play Whack-a-mole with scv's trying to set up new bases. Not only would that have slowed the expansion down, but it could cause enemy reactionary movements trying to catch up to them and - in turn - presented more Derp situations on the map for Marc to capitalize on. Also: probably free scouting on the composition and movement of the upcoming Attack.
Nice win. Since you mentioned it I would love to see you play deadlock with an arranged team of discord members on voice chat. It could be a good time. I think you need someone to send you an invite to play it but that shouldn't be hard for you to get.
Hey! The shoo shoo scv train gave me an idea for a challenge. What if you could only control one unit type? Say you decide to only control zergling, then if you make roaches, you have to put the roaches on follow on the zerglings. Can you beat insane AI (or grand master) by doing that for each unit for each race?
the problem with AI also is that it is trained on basic starting conditions. it does not know nor understand that you are starting with 1 scv. if it would know it would probably just base trade at minute one. and since you would have only 1 scv you would lose. but still fun video! i like the train of billys. :D
Now I want another serral or clem series where they have to send one more drone/svc after each win. harassing allowed for more fun. Could be even cooler than the one with reduced health
I thought the very hard AI would just play a uThermal i.e. make a Reaper and just start eliminating the SCVs ..... and that would hit extremely hard and fast ... so Marc got lucky! Thank you for the insane challenge!
The problem with built-in computer opponents is that they are very limited in what they can do. You will never see smart distraction on one side while doom dropping the back door at the same time. Nor do you see proxy 3 rax and rushing in 3 minutes into the match or ramp harass like building a depot on the ramp to stop you from being able close it off.
Okay I'm 9 minutes in and if I know my Ai Easy, medium, and hard AI hit at a specified time with a specified supply then expand as long as you have enough to hold that first attack you should win. (Rush tank ez win) After hard or very hard the builds will start varying and after very hard they start cheesing and clocking if I recall. I am a new player I have lost to the new AI about 6 months ago. now I have beat all three campaigns on hard differently working on brutal and a silver rank on the ladder. I'm really enjoying starcraft 2 and Uthermal's videos.
13:20 thats a video idea doing mono battle/ other wierd cheeses aganst people that have map hacks. i thing i saw pig cast show matches of pros vs "ethical and consensual map hacks"
I'm really curious if the "scouts" cause the AI to make decisions, or if they are just sending out units to make it look like a computer needs a scout.
I was pretty sure how this would go: easy, easy, easy...and then you get to Insane and it's suddenly laughably impossible. Was *NOT* expecting what actually happened. Exploitable AI behavior FTW! (That's why the 10-Bronze challenge is such a nice pairing with this video. Bronze players may be erratic but they're not predictable, and this is a big problem....)
You should use the arcade sometime, much easier to do these challenges with it. Also, how about you start with 1 scv, 400 minerals and no command center next time (of course, using cheats in the arcade to make it happen), it’d be super cool what a Grand master can do with that!
To uphold your promise to play "whatever" if you managed to beat the insane AI, I'd like you to consider playing Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance Forever. Also known as FAF. EDIT: I have long wondered how a pro SC2 player would fair in FAF and what strategies they would use. Knowing you uThermal, you'd pick Cybran, build mobile stealth field generators and micro rocket bots while rushing rambo support commanders!
Honestly, as far as the probots go, almost all of them will put on early pressure. The only one I can think of that doesn't really is a bot that Ketroc made that plays mass ravens and PFs, as is his style lol
From my experience of playing Ai, not all Ai of the same difficulty are built the same. Some hard Ai are much easier than others. I can't explain why but there is definitely a difference.
Man I need to save up for a gaming pc. This channels got me itching to play sc2 again. My last pc bit the dust like a month after heart of the swarm launched.
I wonder how crisp marcs pushes are now compared to his pro-times. If he's even remotely as sharp as back then I can see this working simply for that fact alone already :D
You should do this with the other races! I think the ai behaves differently against the other races and might even scout if you play random. Could be wrong though.
The "AI" that you find inside video games so far in bots, is not constantly learning. It's just bots set at a fixed difficulty, for early learners to develop. SC2 is a VERY VERY mature game, your grandmaster knowledge is FAR FAR greater than these bots are meant to reproduce, because they were meant to help brand new players develop before the highly developed micro, macro strategies etc were even figured out.
He won against the insanse AI. So now we get him to one thing we want him to, right? That was what he said after all... Btw. didn't he say that he might have to take on the pro AIs with this challenge if he beats the insane AI? Will that be his next challenge video?
This just proves how braindead turtle terran is.
lol
Turtle any race is braindead, that has nothing to do with Terran!
at least its entertaining to watch haha
I want to rename Billy2 to gezenews

Your channel always brings me back to starcraft, i love these videos and i love these challenges. You are incredible man keep it up!
Plot twist uThermal and the A.I. are the same person and the A.I. is just playing a challenge against him like slow lings.
Since you have to play a game of our choice, I nominate Dwarf Fortress.
I'd love to see how his starcraft brain reacts to Total war warhammer3 totally different type of strategy
@@h0h0j0e5great idea

@Blinky867 bro dont have to smart shame man. Dont comment if u dont understand
The AI has a tech limit, too - I don't think Easy ever gets upgrades. The ScoreScreen graph flat-lines
I play vs the ai alot, and each difficulty has a "unit cap", and the higher you get the more units they are alowed to make and the more frequent they will replenish the units lost.
glad im not the only one who noticed that
Meanwhile on his stream: "He has only one SCV but I'm still not allowing myself to have hopes"
Love these! Challenges against AIs are fun. The archon challenges, 2v2 challenges, and of course all of the solo challenges are lovely content.
What about never building additional SCVs? The ones you start with are the only ones you'll ever have, any losses are permanent
That would be cool. Like my Granddad
That's not really a challenge. To put it quite simply, even my noob ass can steamroll cheater 3 AI without building workers.
