GWAR was gracious enough to let Premier Guitar sit down and talk with their human servants, Brent Purgason and Mike Derks, who know a few things about the rigs of the aliens Pustulus Maximus and Balsac the Jaws of Death. Before Nashville was covered in fake blood and sweat, we were “allowed” to talk to the guys about the trials and tribulations of keeping guitars and gear in working order under such hellacious conditions.
Purgason plays his signature Blakhart model, the Whargoul Pustulus Maximus. Even though the guitar takes a beating every night, Purgason says he’s only had to make minor adjustments. His guitars are strung with .010-.046 D’Addario sets.
The stage is packed with props, but Purgason’s amps and cabs are cleverly hidden in set carts to prevent damage. His rig is fairly simple: a pair of 4-channel Engl E530 tube preamps and a 6L6-powered Engl 850/100 tube power amp running through a blood-soaked Krank 4x12 cab.

I’ve seen GWAR too many times to remember....ive always admired how tight live gigs really are....everyone in the band is always on point
I seen them once opened for lamb of gwar not only was that a great concert but i was lucky enough to hangout with dave by myself for half hour then i met cory smoot i still got there signed poster
Mike Derks is one of the coolest and most humble dudes, ever. He’s always just been in it for the fun and love of the performance.
Ñ
randy can i get some tegridy
I have a glow in the dark Balsac guitar pick, got it at one of Oderus's last shows. More valuable than life.
+Mace Steffy Definitely more valuable than human life!
Why would you to be discussing the value of human life when there is absolutely none.Have our Interstellar invaders not opened your mind yet to the uselessness of our existence as humans?... Yes a guitar pick is worth more than a human life. So is a cat turd.
@@ziggylayneableI think I love you?
"What kind of wood is that guitar?"
"Ehm.... its actual grown organic live wood from a tree" xD
At soon as seen this comment. Moments later, it was said. I thought oh there it is- lmfao
I've had the pleasure of opening for GWAR twice this past year with The Meatmen and they were great and also super cool dudes. Wishing them all the best.
Gwar and Meatmen on the same stage. Awesome. Saw Meatmen back home in Portland, Oregon. Amazing show. Glad you got to rock with those bands!
Kevin Roberts prove it!!!
Do they really eat live babies before going out on stage and if so did they leave you any?
"im missin a couple things cause I was- I mean "the boss" was trying some different stuff out" good save
My thoughts too.
Way cool, I used ta crash at Pustulus Maximus aka Brent Purgason's house on Lombardy St. in Richmond, VA, so great to see him getting some recognition. He knows his shit. Cheers
dont lie
@@ChristianSachaNovak lol
you mean you used to crash at the house of the human slave of pustulus
I don't know why the hell Balsac and Pustulus are allowing human slaves to get near their instruments....
No time to take drugs, rape and kill if you have to be your own guitar tech...
They will be punished for their transgressions ASAP
I would love to see video of Pustulus beating up his guitar tech Brent..😂😂😂😂😂
Cause they’re slaves?
I thought the same thing about John Mayer
Wow, Mike Derks even has the same left arm tattoo sleeve as Balsac does!
Hey..... wait a minute.....
Kim Cornell SILENCE!!! You will respect your interstellar rulers!!
Kim Cornell it's a brand for his slaves. It's so they can identify ownership.
+Kim Cornell Thought he looked a bit too familiar. lol Hails!
Nah he just gives Balsac his flesh every gig.
So does Brent and Pustulus
"War Ghoul".
I really cracked up over that one.
Mike Derks is one of the nicest guys that I have had the pleasure to meet. 👍🏻
Very cool! It's amazing that Balsac's Mesa Boogie has lasted THAT long, wow! That's a ton of abuse for quite some time.
Boy. These techs know so much about the gear. If I didn't know any better....
There stage performance will never be the same with our oderus
They won't, but they are still good
They are their own guitar techs. Saving that money, I see.
+Sklort Shartly god damn man! Its their slaves for fucks sake
Billy Sheehan does that a lot too.
I don't know what you're talking about, that's their slaves, man.
Unless you're selling millions of albums and playing 20,000 seat venues, you're not making a whole lot of money in the music industry. Most of these guys have other jobs they work when not recording or on tour.
They are really good guitar players. They take an interest in the details of the instrument.
We now know the secret to Balsac's punishing guitar tone: don't put the G string in the bridge saddle's groove like lowly humanoid earthlings do. Proof at 6:55. I thought this was just a mistake, but his backup (look closely at 9:05) is the same way. I'm doing this to all my guitars now! I SHALL HAVE BALSAC TONE!
7yr later that is still hilarious
still here laughing @@SirSloop1919
I saw them open for I.c.p. Of all bands and they were out of this world! Literally, lol! I've been a fan since that night! For a band that is a lot of theatrics they really have a pretty good sound/ tone. And now we know why.
Thanks Premier Guitar, Rig Rundown! Keep up the great work!!!
Same here seen them at harpos Halloween night blew me away
@@bigcurtchop - I was there and jumped off the stage twice.
I'm sure these slaves were beaten mercilessly for showing these guitars with so much earth-grime on them. The floggings and entrail twistings must've been glorious.
2:14 I'm telling you, those shredded strings on Pustulus' guitar, I'll bet you he dared Balsac to play it with his Jaws of Death, and that is the result.
Been a GWAR fan for near 20 years, this video was an awesome behind the scenes
that little symbol on pustulus' guitar I just noticed he put that near his name when I got his autograph. glad I got to meet them at one of oderus' last shows
Does the volume knob go to 11?
Haha, awesome. Nice techs. They were the real Balsac and Pustulus. Gwar is such a good band musically.
@Icky Crane: Another genius!
Hail, Geocide is just so good
"I'm missing a couple of pieces now because I was trying some, errr... the boss was trying some things out hahaha". Oh Pusty.
When did he say it, I must’ve missed that part
+Jeffrey Maki Song at the beginning is Hail, Genocide! off the Bloody Pit of Horror album.
Mike Derks is 70 years old-He was 63 in this interview- Looked great-
He's 54 now
These guys are the players and the techs.
I think their actually just the players
Matty Benson I saw them in November and the band setup their own shit (out of costume obviously).
@Caveira138: Another genius who thinks he's "in the know."
Liar
@@melgibsonfan9082liar
One of the gear videos I have watched multiple times
Jizmak drum tour
It's funny to see these guys without their costumes. They seem like cool dudes
I saw Gwar the first time at City Gardens NJ 1988.
I have that same blackout metal pup with the boost switch hooked up. Its an amazing pup.
I have an FCB 1010 new that I have never used. They are inexpensive too. Best board I never used!
I was at that show! It was awesome! Hello from Nashville!
One fellow on another video where Pustulus talked about his rig made a remark about how it was nice to see guys kicking it old school with actual tube amps and gear instead of "OK, these are my guitars, and this is my Kemper kthxbai." I agree, it's nice to see guys out there still getting into the nuts and bolts of it with their rigs. No amount of emulation will replace the glory that is a tube amp in full flight!
Who gave the slaves permission to talk to Howe Mandel
I love how fans like you got the Dave brockie humor down.
I swear Brent could be Dimes brother.
yup
I thought the same thing when I saw Vinnie Paul
@@ziggylayneable LoL
Haha you can tell he’s struggling to talk in third person
“What I - what he does is”
Ya know, its gotta be hell for these guys to keep up this fuckin gimmick haha
The techs are Balsac and Pustulus.
yeah, just unmasked
@MrCheesyboy9: No shit, Sherlock!
Shut your mouth human!
Everytime he wiped it, the smudges got worse
Can't belive GWAR has sold more albume world wide then sum 41, anthrax , slayer just wow !
#30millionworldwide
I'm starting to get suspicious that those are the actual guitar players for GWAR and they are just pretending to be their techs. I'm pretty sure that I'm the only one who noticed it but I have a keen eye
what are you talking about? that's their slaves
No $hit Sherlock 😂
God damn do I miss Cory and Dave. Say what you will about GWAR, but Cory was a damn FINE guitar player. You can't deny it or say otherwise. He could play some kick ass thrash-inspired riffs and solo pretty well without coming off as some cliche Van Halen nerd. Dave was at least original with his lyrics and humor... plenty of artists have been weird and odd with their content and style, but Brockie knew taking it less serious would be much more fun and beneficial for them.
Like i said, say what you will about GWAR, but they do have some fine talent and innovation. I rather see them than attend a boring Rush concert where the set is composed of non sense and 1 mainstream hit.
Opens with my favorite GWAR song, I love it already!
What song is that?
Christian Augustin Hail, Genocide
overlorrd53 thanks bro
Hopefully Pustulus didn’t watch this and see that his guitar tech called him fat
All warriors keep their weapons in great shape.
RIP Brockie
Matt Hardy is in GWAR? Sweet!
All hail Gwar
pustulus warghoul guitrar would make a great 4 string bass with the same humbucker but a kahler trem bridge.
Balsac's Guitar tech check list:
#1 Tune guitar
#2 wipe guitar off with your button up shirt!
Hahahah
Dude definitely took an original approach to creating that rig, I like it!
why am I just finding out that there's a GWAR rig rundown?
I am trying I mean the boss is trying something new. XD ever the act.
Michael Dirks is Balsac and Brent Purgason is Pustulus.
Shhhh! They'll hear you!
Premier Guitar needs a passionate guitar player to interview the rock stars, so they can ask actual questions, not things like "oh, is it heavy?" Lol
+Rimfeldt Is that a B.C. Rich Mockingbird on your avatar? If so, what year/series?
Fernandes/Burny Mg-145S YH :).
Can't wait for the day I can own one of those axes. RIP Hide.
OMG WOW AMAZING!!!!!! WOAAAAH
I'd love to interview
It's funny because that's actually GWAR, they are apparently techs for themselves.
balsac is so high in this lol
Is he?
This is the most Metal tech on the planet 🤘🤘🤘🤘
That’s Brent and Mike not Pusty and Balsac
Man I'd LOVE to own that Blakhart guitar. The specs are just perfect 👌🏻 lol
Waiting for this for 3 years
how do they shred with all that shit on?
There’s Matt hardy
Anyone know which song they’re playing at the beginning?
It'd be so hard for me pretending this wasn't my gear.
I read mike derks has a rare form ov a bone disease.. all the best man..
wouldnt hurt for them to move a little on stage
Gabe King even better!
Gabe King All of those bands are utterly horrible.
Gabe King must be computer hour at the old-folks home
ZachAttack84 nah he just has a decent taste in music instead of this shit ;)
Gabe King What's wrong buddy you can't listen to a band that didn't start in the 60s and 70s
Is that Brent Hinds that peeks in from the back door @ 6:39?
Pustulus shreds...
The Beatles, The Cure, Pink Floyd, GWAR. My four favorite bands in ascending order.
When are you guys going to do these with Pusty and Balsac doing the talking?
I wouldnt exactly call the exit inn legendary. Masquerade in atlanta is one hell of a party though.
For the love of all that's holy: Change the interviewer!! I've been wating to see what GWAR is using, but this guy just blew it for me.. Not good, Premier.. Not good
"this is Brent he's the guitar tech for GWAR"😂😂😂😂😂 it looks a lot like the BC Rich stealth that Chuck Schuldiner from Death played(what a sad early loss that was, losing Chuck)
Blood for Balsac!!!!
It's......."Duh-dario"......
What’s the song in the Intro?
Is the first dude not Pustulus???? I saw another vid of him and the tattoos look awfully similar.
wtf. Are the strings on the second guitar upside down?
The guitar tech is actually Pustulus Maximus lol tattoos say it all lol !
i have 2 1010 & i cant get them to work AT ALL!
very melodic for aliens
Does Gwar use standard tuning? They get a pretty heavy sound out of those guitars. I guess downtuning isn't completely necessary for metal.
A lot of it is a half-step down from standard.
I knew someone would know. Thanks guys.
Sure thing, man!
You'd be surprised how much metal is in standard or just a half step down. Most classic and thrash metal doesn't get lower than a full step down. Death metal and black metal tend to be the ones who like the super low tuning, generally speaking of course.
I believe they mostly use standard and d# so no it isn't very low in the tuning spectrum
what is the title of this song playing on the begening ????
sebeau Hail, Genocide! from Bloody Pit Of Horror
He’s in the band though not just tech
Correction: they are titled " Butt boys", not human slaves. Long live Gwar!
So these two guys are actually Pustulus and Balsac
Whats the opening song called in this vid?
"hail, genocide!" off their album "bloody pit of horror" :3
Dude Brent looks just like steven crowder 🤣
New gwar is so toned down. Where's the blood?
5:28 Michael kinda looks like dave a little bit ☹
What kind of basses are the ones they use?
I wanna say Dean Razorback V basses.
Anybody know what the band is on Brent’s shirt?
Andrew Samonte ... Watain ... Swedish Black Metal band.
Iam_Dunn thanks Mahn!!
Hahaha so the guitar techs huh?? Hahaha GWAR!!!!
How does Balsac Jaws of Death use pedals with those feet of his? He walks on like, stilts. I guess he just doesn't use pedals.
ruclips.net/video/A17B7BGIVwM/видео.html the feet have shoes on the inside
Whats the song at the begining
Genocide
