    DO NOT GO TO COLLEGE UNTIL YOU FIND WHAT YOU CONSISTENTLY LIKE TO DO. I studied computer science only to find dread, despair, and deep regret considering my passion and gravitation towards music and aviation. Now i have 70k in debt to a career i couldn't care less about and have to work again to save for flight school. College is the car, not the road

      That's a good tip! I agree, it may be a better idea to test drive a career first, before committing to a major. Thanks for sharing that!

      I actually feel the opposite. I was passionate about film, so I took that, only to discover it was a gigantic waste of time and not even a requirement to finding employment in the industry. If I could do again, I would have gone into computer science instead, much prefer steady employment in a field I’m not the most passionate about than to find my own interest a chore that’s somewhat of a gamble anyway. If you are interested in something, especially if it concerns the arts, NEVER sudy it in college, or at least don’t major in it,I wish someone discouraged me from taking film.

    While college was a good experience that allowed me to grow and develop more interests, I'm still mad at my parents for forcing me to go right after high school when I wasn't ready. I was in a very depressing state with no motivation or career goal in mind. But society is always so conformed with absolutely needing to go to college. My mom wouldn't let me take a gap year, or even a gap semester. Now I'm stuck graduating with a degree I no longer want to pursue and a pile of meaningless debt.

    I've always loved STEM, for that reason I chose CS and halfway through third year, I hate it so much. I'm hearing from everyone in the family how big of a mistake I'm making to chnage to English Language, how I'll never get a decent job with a Bachelor of Arts degree, etc. But I'm determined. One day I might go back to CS or STEM, but right now I just don't want to hate my life and actually do something I'm good at for once instead of struggling through a CS degree I won't even get a job in

    I followed the cliche advice of following your passions. Since I was kid I wanted to go into the medical field so I majored in Kinesiology since I liked learning about the human body but I didn't realize how much sacrifice, commitment, and time it was until I applied to PT school. Lot of that passion disappeared especially when got into a school that would put me $200K in debt and I will only make $70-$80 K salary after graduating. My priorities changed in life now, and I realized that I value now more financial security and freedom. I still think I would find another career that fullfills me, allows me to solve problems, help others, has good work life balance,and makes a healthy salary with no financial burden, but I just feel so lost. My parents even warned me of this but I was just too stubborn and kept going on this path despite not knowing what I really wanted out of my life.

    • @MultipleCareers
      @MultipleCareers  Год назад +9

      Oftentimes, it's not either-or. I believe it's less about following your passion or not, but deciding when it's time to follow your passion, and when to prioritize money. It's possible to alternate between both. At some point, hopefully the two can even come together, and you can follow some of your passion while making a living. All the best!

    It happens the opposite to me. I studied Film and Television and I regret it. I just don't have the passion anymore. If it were my actual vocation, I would film each time I can but I don't feel the desire to do that anymore. Colleagues and friends tell me I am good and passionate about it but honestly, I think it is just out of the worry of doing a work wrong, not because I have a passion but perfectionism in general. It has more to do with my personality, I am more use to receive orders than having initiative. I should have gone for sciences, working in a lab, doing numbers or something like that. However since it was not a cheap career at all, I feel even more regret. If I would return to study another career, I would feel like a failure in life.

    Back in high school, i didn't know who to consult to because 1. talking to the school counselor wasn't an action i was familiar nor comfortable with, 2. i was too timid to talk about it with my parents because their expectations of me and what i was interested in was so different, plus some other personal reasons, and 3. i thought i needed to talk to an adult to get the right advice, but besides those 2 options, i didn't know who else to talk to, as i was quite shy to talk to anyone i don't feel very close to. In the end i chose architecture and miraculously got into a good university. It made sense when i was in high school because technically it combined something i enjoyed doing and my parents' expectations of me. But in reality, it was completely different from what i expected. I was miserable the entire time. I didn't have the passion nor the motivation to learn, but i don't know what major to change into if i quit this one, so i stayed. When the pandemic hit, i was even more scared to change path so i struggled my way through and thankfully graduated last year. I am still very confused as to which career path i should take, because i'm not confident in the major i studied, nor am i in anything else, so i'm scared to even send a resume anywhere. I regretted choosing my major and i still cry about it alone every now and then, including today. But seeing this video calmed me down and give me a better understanding plus a little confidence in how i should handle this situation. Thank you!

    I feel like I was blindly just completing my education without any aim in life. I really didn't have any idea how much hard you have to study to get a good job. I'm giving my exams right now and my exams are going bad. I've never faced failure in life and I'm sure this time I'm gonna get a backlog in couple subjects. I've chose CS as me masters but now when I'm studying and analyzing I feel like I don't really feel interested in learning it. My brain just doent work in a technical way. All the other students in class get their answers really fast and have a high functioning brain.. I'm in a lot of stress because of that. I had a choice to study MBA but I thought I could pull of a CS degree after seeing how much people earn in it. But now I realized that it's too difficult for me and I'm stuck in my Masters. I feel like if I take a decision of changing my field now. That will be wrong too. Any career I take will not be for me. Or I just don't have personality. I thought I would enjoy Speech Language Pathology because of the ability to work with children and pursue a clinical based major. It’s only been a semester but I already feel dreadful about my choice after seeing more of what the program entails and knowing that I would have to attend grad school to actually become an SLP. I’ve realized that my true passion is nursing but it seems I made this realization too late since many nursing schools require freshman admission. In addition, I already took a gap year prior to beginning my undergrad and I hate the feeling that I am further “behind” those around me.

    I'm only seventeen and just became a senior in highschool before I encountered this problem. Luckily, it's only the beginning of the school year and I haven't begun applying to any colleges; but it's a very scary and terrifying thought to suddenly come into the realization that all that you've been working and striving for, for the past few years would have all been for nothing.
    I'm an art student and so my passion has always been for creating drawings, it's a skill that I've been cultivating seriously for the past five or six years and it's disheartening to feel like the one thing that I'm good at wouldn't be enough for me to live a stable and healthy life- at least, not without breaking my back for meager pay and tight deadlines around business corporations who don't value art enough as a subject and are more than willing to feed into AI for cheap and faster labor.
    Though be that as it may, I know that I won't ever stop creating art. Just that I won't ever pursue a career out of it, hopefully I'd still be able to keep myself in the industry through business or with screenwriting/just becoming an author in general, but I'm still lost on the sort of direction that I'm supposed to take by the end of this year now that I'll finally be going into college and I have little more than just a year to prepare for it.
    Hopefully I can return to this video and see this old comment of mine and give a little update as to how I am doing in the future and what I eventually chose to pursue :]

    • @MultipleCareers
      @MultipleCareers  Год назад +2

      You've described a very common dilemma amongst artistic people. I've seen many similar cases where people find it hard to pursue an artistic career because the pure pursuit of it just doesn't pay enough (at least in the beginning!). Happy to hear that you're still trying ways to make it work. If art runs in your veins, there's just no other way than to pursue it.
      There are many ways to make it work eventually. One path people pursue is to start a business related to art (e.g. graphic design, web design) that allows them fast, unlimited growth and the flexibility they need to work on their own projects. Another path is to work in a second-best job you can still endure and learn something from and that's high-paying for 5 years or so, become financially independent, and then do anything you like.
      Yes, please come back to this thread and update us all on how things went. Although, RUclips doesn't update me when there are replies to replied comments, so you may want to post it on a newer video. All the best!

I lost all my friends, I felt extremely depressed, and I was getting high almost everyday to get through it. I switched to social work because I wanted to help others and myself. Im realizing now that I want to go back into computer science because technology is my true passion. I do feel some regret in switching majors, but I also wonder if I would be as strong as I am today. I’m trying to look at the positive things I’ve got out of my experience.

    Thanks for a great, insightful video. My first degree and initial studies are in art, design and contemporary craft. I subsequently became more involved in HRD and online educational content earning multiple certifications, a master's in leadership and HRM along with a dual certification in strategic leadership and management. I've learned to find ways to combine all the knowledge and skills gained while capitalizing on my abilities as a creative and critical thinker. In fact, my leadership roles stemmed from the first degree, and I have always assumed this in my career path.
    One of the few projects I'm working on involves consulting for a batik artist to write a book of his amazing journey with a view to elevating his brand, e.g. digitizing his book and workshops, art pieces, etc. Therefore, I would like to do similar business development endeavors for the creative industries in my region so for me the possibilities are endless. I'm very much an advocate of pushing boundaries while going the unconventional route as long as it is beneficial and profitable in the long run. Please keep up the good work!

      Thank you for sharing your story! That seems like a really fun project! It sounds like a wonderful way to combine and make use of all your skills and experiences. I believe there is an immense need for support for people in art. They are usually 100% focused on developing their work (at least that's what they want!) so it leaves them no time/energy left for the business development side. What you're doing is truly valuable!
      We often underestimate the role of things we experienced, phases of life in the past, in our current success and tend to focus on the negative aspects. Your story shows that there are a lot of hidden gems to be found and put to use towards new goals, and will be very encouraging to anyone who reads it here! I wish you all the best!

    I find many comments here interesting. I regret mechanical engineering with an emphasize on manufacturing. Anyone who has studied engineering knows how much effort it requires, even the easier versions of manufacturing. I went in as a naive 19 year old thinking that a 3 year bachelors degree would make the companies even headhunt me. Because they always mention the huge lack of engineers in my country. But I think they are lying/wrong.
    Anyway it took me almost 6 years (5,5 years) to finish my 3 year degree. With reexaminations and alot of work I finally made it. I got out of the other end hoping companies would hire me left and right for being so well educated. I was so wrong. I even had to apply for 30-60 jobs and finally got one in inside sales which I could have done without the degree. The problem with this is that I wasted my early 20´s (19-25) studying a subject I only studied because I thought everyone/companies would chase me, even the biggest companies. But I was sorely mistaken, in hindsight I should have studied the labour market more closely, but how many students do that at 19? They said there was a engineering shortage and I just thought that meant a lot of money and good work.
    Also the degrees at university are way too academic I think. A Bachelor eng degree is fine if you will go for a masters and Phd since the courses are clearly steered towards academic work. But the knowledge I have from university is usually irrelevant for companies.
    What practical knowledge can I contribute with if my courses have nothing to do with their company? Therefor more practical schools need to be started in order to make more money in the future.
    Then some people say that my bsc in engineering prove to employers that you can finish what you start and handle a high coursload etc. Really? You are telling me i wasted my early 20´s (19-25) being stressed out of my mind to prove that I can finish what I started?
    That does not give me jobs. Oh well this is my reflection anyways.

    I wonder how you are able to built this mindset to make this video. It took me a while to get over the fact that I had studied a degree that didn't lead me into a career, but had accepted the fact. I am still struggling to find a clear career path, and not being able to find and secure jobs right away is not helping me put the fact behind me. Maybe I will not get to that point in my life where I see the purpose of me completing that degree. That's also a sad truth about life that we all have to accept, as they say sunkcost.

    • @MultipleCareers
      @MultipleCareers  3 года назад +1

      How long has it been since you got that degree and now feel that it's difficult to get over it?
      Honestly, it took me a long time to get over it. I would say it's less a matter of time but more a matter of how many 'new cycles' of work you've been through. If you've had one job after your degree, you might still feel hung up about having studied the 'wrong degree'. But after you've been through your 3rd, 4th, 5th job, that feeling is likely to fade aways. Also, the happier and more fulfilled you are in your current career, the less you weight those regrets will have.
      It's hard for many people to find a clear career path as you mentioned, it can take a lot of time and trial and error. But it's worth pursuing it, because life is still long. You try hard for the next few years to get into a career that is fulfilling and you'll reap the benefits until the rest of your life. Wishing you all the best!

    Writing my thesis for my international relations undergrad right now. I entered this major in the first place because "oh I liked Model United Nations surely I could fit right in" but no. It turns out I hated contemporary politics of any kind and I should have realized this a long time ago because I didn't like civic studies as a kid. I realized during one semester abroad I took more history-based classes and it was the most I got enjoyment out of my major.
    My biggest fear with my major is that I'm a jack of all trades but a master of none. In fact...I don't feel like I'm a jack at *anything* at all. International Relations touts you with the prospect of being knowledgeable in various fields all at once, like politics, economics, history, geography, etc. But I don't feel like I've specialized in one area enough that my knowledge feels useful. You’re right that you become a generalist without enough knowledge in a specific field or skill. I also took classes in politics, economics, history, statistics, etc. but it was more theoretical and less practical knowledge. Because of that, I struggled for 2 years to find a job, and I eventually had to settle for a job unrelated to my degree. Now, I’m working on pivoting into data analysis. I found out that it could relate to my degree and that many people who studied political science have went on to become data analysts. There is also a growing market for jobs in data analysis so I’m hoping I can get in.

      There's in article in one of my recent videos that says that over 30% people regret their major. I would say that it's more than that because not everyone will disclose their regrets!
      The only thing I would say is to look at things from a bigger perspective. How many years have you studied? Compare that to how long your entire career will be, and how long your life will be? Compared to that, the duration of your studies is not that long.
      Then, consider how long it will take to change careers - it could simply just mean taking a course or a getting some certificate.
      It doesn't matter what you did in the past, as long as you change the course of things once you've realized it. If you've realized a wrong decision but don't change your course, then in a few years from now, you'll experience regret all over again.
      To be happy, among others, means to be working towards something that matters to you, that gives you hope. It doesn't mean it's easy and always pleasant, but it's something that's worth doing and you're willing to sacrifice for.
      It's not easy to find what that is. That's what this channel is about. All the best!

  • @millycapel4332
    @millycapel4332 Год назад +1

    I disagree with the second part because my degree did not get me any accreditation for anything. If I had chosen my field I would have done something with media but even that is a risky field as well. And you do live with burn out.

      @MultipleCareers  Год назад +1

      By accreditation I just mean that society/employers acknowledge that you have completed specific education and it counts as a very basic baseline to be considered for certain jobs. It's like having a kitchen without meaning you can necessarily bake delicious cookies.

    Right now i am in the midst of choosing a major, and is there anything you would recommend in terms of avoiding being indecisive and dedicating yourself to a goal while also recognizing when to change paths?

    • @MultipleCareers
      @MultipleCareers  2 года назад +5

      The reason we're indecisive is often that we're afraid to make 'the wrong choice', without the possibility of turning back. It may help to remember that oftentimes there's not one decision to make, but rather a series of decisions. If you've taken sufficient time to deliberate then that's the best decision you can come up with at that time. After you implement that decision, to not get stuck on a less-optimal path, it's useful to review where you're at, latest every 6 months. That way you can always pivot.
      Related to choosing a major; Many people pick the wrong major because they mistake being interested in a subject (let's say history) with actually wanting to work in that field. To make the best decision, working backward is useful. Start with the job you wanna do after graduation, and find out exactly what degree/education is needed for that.

    Supply Chain student here from PH.
    It's too late for me to switch, I'm on my 3rd year. I just want to graduate fast but at the same time a little bit of regret is still there.. I've been watching this since yesterday.
    I think this field isn't for me and I dread coming to class everyday. I just need to hold on for a bit and I'm done.
    I wanted to go into Environmental Science and Biology. In the future, if I decide to leave Supply Chain or just decided to not get into it:
    Do I have the chance to get environmental science / biology related jobs with a Supply Chain degree?
    If it's even possible I want to work abroad someday.

    • @MultipleCareers

      It seems you're almost about to graduate, I see why it's too late to switch majors now. But it's not too late in the context of your whole life. You can, later on, always change your career. Go back to school, etc. Life is long and full of possibilities.

      I am 41. I have a degree in supply chain from a div 1 school. It is the second biggest regret of my life. I wanted to be a guidance counselor for young people or a gym teacher. My father explained he would not support me in getting a degree for one of those low paying loser jobs and that I would have to drop out of college (you can't get loans if your parents won't help with loans paperwork). I don't call my father anymore.
      My advice is stay in college. Switch your major now. It will probably be some bs like you won't get a degree in 4 years but instead 6. Do you want to be 41 and starting over, or worse working jobs you hate for years and years? No one ever told me what supply chain jobs will be like so i'll tell as you someone whos had several. You will work in a warehouse, factory or somewhere routing trucks. You will engage in interdepartmental conflict on a daily basis. The blue collar people will view you as an outsider. The corporate office people will be full of psychopaths, sociopaths and narcissists. The office people will hate you for having a degree and view you as a problem, a danger. Most of them have a high school degree, hate every minute of life, but choose to stay because the field pays ok.
      There are so many other things I wanted to do in life. Some people will disagree with me but if you hate your career it's not a life worth living. I have adopted a minimalist lifestyle. I plan to save money and leave the game entirely by either opening a small business or buying property and renting it out. Best of luck to you.

      @@ChooseLoveToday316 Something similar happened to me. When I was younger, I thought that I wanted to be a civil engineer, but after a while, my life prespective has changed. At my 26 y o(almost 27), I found out that what I truly love is Medicine. Idk, it's just something amazing. The problem is, maybe it's too late to go to Medschool.😞 It saddens me.

    • @ChooseLoveToday316
      @ChooseLoveToday316 Год назад +1

      @@benditonafilo1295 never too late man to choose another path, but we must have alternate paths if the one we want doesn't work out.. I am going to get a life coach certificate and trauma counselor certificate and try to help people (I wanted to be a guidance counselor). I may go back to school for psychology i'm not sure yet, or like I said maybe i'll save and open a business. My daughter is trying to get into med school. She has been denied and has a test in a week to see if she can get into another. I recommend you do a personality test and start thinking about other jobs that will fulfill you. I spend several hours a week counseling acquaintances and friends mostly by reaffirming positive affirmations and reframing negative broken belief systems. So I like this field enough to do it without pay and have studied for hundreds possibly thousands of hours on my own. I was depressed for a long time. I feel we are all in charge of our lives. We cannot stay victims of suffering because suffering is a normal part of life and even though it is often unfair and wrong we can accept that we all suffer it's a part of life and not let it define us.

      It can help to put things in perspective. Look at your entire life and see what proportion the stage your at is compared to the whole. You might have a lousy 2-3 years, but in view of a possibly 90-year long life, there are so many things you can still do to change course, if you're serious about it. Quitting doesn't always make you a loser. Maybe you lost something at that point, but as long as you're off to something better, you're not a loser.

    Please help :( I’m about to graduate with a B.A. in sociology and I’m having so much regret and pain and heartbreak. For my first two years I studied math and computer science at my community college to pursue a degree in statistics. The first month after transferring to a big uni, I cracked and couldn’t handle the pressure, so I switched my degree to sociology because it was much easier. I did not enjoy working with numbers and complex math and coding, but I certainly wanted a reliable way to make money. Now, I have a human resources job lined up after I graduate, but I’m so scared that I will not like this career path and will have no useful degree to fall back on. I feel like I never got the chance to explore other options like medicine or life science jobs…. :'(

I have a deep passion for the creative side (art ,design and fashion design etc ) but ended up going into a econ major for a BA in general studies due to some pressure from family. Mind you,I do like academic and intellectual aspects of life ( if I may say )but lately my minds been swarming with doubts about what major I chose , will I even be able to handle it and am I just wasting my time on studying something I’m not passionate about. I love to learn new things but if I’m not capable enough i immediately set myself up - either resulting in me not being able to finish this degree and wasting so much money already .And if I change then my passion would honestly result in more problems .I’m stuck between my passion and an opportunity to learn something that is held as more valuable because it’s ‘ academic ‘ and I’m not sure what way to go …all I can do is pray .

If I could back, I'd not necessarily go straight into the arts, but what I'd definitely do if I'd stayed in the financial industry is save money diligently to the point that I achieve FIRE or at least 50% financial freedom, within the first 5-8 years of my career, then quit my job and fully pursue arts.
