Time to do a “modern” Doolittle raid re-enactment? C-130s instead of B-25 Mitchells?

Against Shanghai?
On my last deployment in Iraq, we where just flying around in a pattern waiting to refuel F18s and Harriers. We had some down time and I was allowed to fly the C130 for about 45 minutes. It surprisingly is very agile and quick on the yoke response.
KC-130 pilot here. I love DCS too.
JP 5 kerosene jet fuel for the Herk. Pretty much most JP’s except 8 (sr 71), It will run on vodka too bc of the temp-datum system.
@@suecobandito8954 Which model(s)? I worked on Fs, Rs and Js. KC-130 refuelers
Thanks guys!
I was the last enlisted sailor trained on the Navy's TACAMO EC-130, I was supposed to transition to the E-6a but I ended up medically grounded. Now, they are going back to the 130j based E-XX
From the discussion at 8:20. Can confirm that as a Herc pilot, 2's in. He is watching lead and does what he needs to stay in place. There are no wing rocks, hand signals, or radio calls.
Simba is always so confidentally incorrect
@@NemoGraynameA8 He very clearly was talking in about military planes in general but also they were in a Herc and he was chastising Dark or whoever the lead was. You should go listen again.
Question. I’m curious why hercs would fly in a tight formation like that. Would that ever happen in an operation? Or just training?
When we did formation in helos there's wasn't a waggle before a turn. Even when tip to tip it was coms and pilot and crew chief on that side looking for any movement.
The better question is why would you ever fly fingertip or parade formation? It makes no tactical sense.
I love this sim, looked up more on Rapid Dragon..." For example, a C-130 could launch 12 JASSM cruise missiles from a safe distance of 620 to 1,180 mi (1,000 to 1,900 km) from target with the use of two Rapid Dragon pallets."
i got to see many c-130 in formation as a 11c in the 82nd, i even got a picture with a disposable camera while i was jumper #1.. the jumpmaster was shocked when i pulled it out, this was back in 1997..
A fellow mortar man high angle hell!
hi cap for context the reason you would use the c130 instead of the hornet is because of it´s range which allows a us carrier to operate outside of china's effective ballistic missile range and still getting within the LRASMS range, as covered on the sandboxx channel
Brill thanks!
This. Although I also like the idea that it's just because nobody could be bothered to unload the pallets.
It doesn't make sense to launch from the carriers. The hercs will just occupy deck space and prevent normal operations. I suspect that they'll take off and recover from more distant land airfields and just rendezvous with carrier-based tankers.
maybe@@jaypascual616
The idea behind Rapid Dragon is that in the opening days of a conflict you can use your transport aircraft (Which the US has loads of) as supplemental bombers to increase the shock and awe effect, and then they can go back to doing logistics for the rest of the war. Much cheaper doing that than building more bombers.
There is an old Simpsons episode where Bart wants to reincarnate as a butterfly…” because nobody ever suspects the butterfly…” I think there is a lot of that in rapid dragon. If you see a b-one of b-52 approaching your border you know it’s an attack but if you see a random tooling around at 250 mph your response is going to be a little less drastic
But how do you deploy them. There isn't enough room on carriers for them and if you're using an island base I feel like 8 missiles up to 24 extra missiles on top of what would be 200 is just not worth it lol
@@lonurad1259I actually believe they have taken off from and certain they have landed on carriers.. with no arresting wire..
@@streetcop157 this is the same logic behind containerised missiles. "what if china put hundreds of antiship missiles into shipping containers and fired them at US warships while they were still in port". It will only work once.
@@hughmungus2760 with china or russias limited carriers it only has to work once but realistically it can work as often as needed. There is nothing to stop it from being launched out of any cargo or modified civilian aircraft, balloon, blimp ect. With a 200 mile range you can threaten the coast with any ship capable of carrying a Blackhawk or weather balloon. Of course it would be cheaper to fly over and drop pallets of cash on them lol.
"Straight from the factory." You kill me.

We don’t operate wing rocks/waggles as standard, we use wing following. Wingmen have eyes glued to lead and follow every move. Lead enters manoeuvres with a slow ‘soft’ entry to allow the wingmen to recognise and start the manoeuvre.
A wing rock, in our case, would indicate return to last formation (rejoin or move back to the briefed formation)
You can't beat a slow, soft entry . . .
@@nigeldepledge3790 erm… that’s what she said?…
Damnit! Flares aren't cheap either. Report to disbursing / the supply clerk after the mission.
Tell me you watch Sandboxx without telling me you watch the Sanboxx for $1000.😂
I approve this mission!
I'm betting the Chinese (and Russian) militaries watch Alex's content also, very closely.
@@scottalanclymeryea probably 🤷🏽♂️
@@scottalanclymer What could they learn on a RUclips video for a news channel that their intelligence agencies didn't already know?
@@frankholub4673 We don't know what their IC already knows. But they damn sure know this now thanks to Sandboxx. That's the point. Additional point is.. the general public, ie the internet, has no inherent right to know a lot of the military info flying around. Not you, not me - even I once held a clearance. Even people WITH the appropriate clearance for a given item only need to know that info IF they are directly involved with the operation it pertains to. Loose lips sink ships is not just a catchy phrase.
AIRPOWER!!
The new missiles have a 1500 mile range and fit onto the same sized pallets.
Realistically at the altitude these fly, it's kind of amazing they aren't frequently lost to moderate sized waves lol
Yeah I think part of the reason why they're not being engaged is because the missiles on the Type052D are using old code from the Type052C which can't engage sea skimmers every well. Even though the missiles on the D version IRL have infrared terminal seekers and can target sea skimmers quite reliably
Hi Cap! I’d like to ask for a scenario of the America class amphibious assault ship with destroyer escort against the Admiral Kuznetsov with destroyer escort.
Roger will consider.
@@grimreapers thank you Cap!
My cousin flys F-18's and also has flown C-5 Gakaxy's before he became a fighter pilot. That is true that the pilots rock the wings, or they will also activate their wing lights. The wing lights are the most common form of communication and there is also a red light 'tap code' that pilots will use.
Why not use the radios though? Are visual signals what they do all the time or only when radio silence is needed?
26:28 Cap casually does a hand break turn 😄
You didn't end up needing it, but the C-130 can use JATO (Jet-assisted Take-Off) on very short "runways". They use to demonstrate that capability at the Point Mugu (California) Airshow(s) back in the 1990's. Not sure if DCS has JATO, but if it does, that is one more thing to keep in mind for future missions.
In an odd happenstance….I CAN SEE MUGU FROM MY WINDOW, really, at this moment.
And they did the demo at Miramar back in the day as well 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I was on the Decommissioning crew of U.S.S. Forrestal CV-59
What's awesome about this channel is that you don't predetermine the outcomes in your videos. Thank you!
Roger I hate the pre-scripted DCS vids, I prefer it like this even if we lose and look like idiots.
Thank you for sharing! That last bit had me 😂! Good show G.R.!
Wow... and how long was Simba arguing with Grump before the video started? There was some venom in that tone. Still a good time though.
Love the Sandboxx inspired video! Great source of ideas
Cap says thats a great start to me like he expected me to nose dive into the ocean. - Dark
FYI a C-130 can carry 2 Qty Rapid Dragon pallets. *that is all*
aye, but only the small pallets, so its 6x2 weapons. The c-17 has the capability to use the bigger pallets that have 9 launch rails and they can carry up to 5 of those
They add a lot of weight, we'd need an entire carrier each to take off...
You are correct, Cap. I usually only see 4 Hercs in wingtip formation out of LRAFB coming to buzz the sailboats racing on Lake Maumelle. 😏
Great work Fellas! Fly's idea of formation carrier landing worked out splendid.
According to my brother that is a loadmaster on a C130J, pilots leaving the aux hydraulic pump on unnecessarily is how to annoy your loadmaster. Apparently they're extremely loud back there.
Aux pump is loud enough that you can hear it over the engine noise with the doors open from the flight deck. It's also high pitched, so it pierces your ears.
Surely a gathering or Hercules aircraft is a herd of Hercs cap
And just like that...the Reapers had fun at the end of the mission!
Afterburners?
Well to be fair, C-130 did have a rocket assist for extreme short take offs... So I think we can say that Herc's have afterburners... 👍👍
I'm LOVING the Stoneburners...
I am AMAZED Simba said "stick manipulation" and not one of you made a giggity/ demonetized comment.
... Not sure if you guys are growing up, or I need to.
Wow, it looks like the c-130s need less run than some fighters on takeoff with those wings of theirs. Amazing.
I think Rapid Dragon is a great concept to augment the U.S. Air Force bombers from land bases. However, I really don't think it makes sense to put them on carriers since like you said two Super Hornets can do the same thing. And if we're using land bases I would say the C-17 makes more sense for the larger load, but I guess there are a lot more C-130s and the C-17s will be busy actually carrying cargo.
also flying C17s within 500nm of a chinese flotilla is gaurenteed to get them sniped by chinese air patrols.
In the Sandbox video, the idea behind using C-130s was to extend the range of the carrier based aircraft. Also, a C-130 can carry more than one palate each.
Edit: I'm not saying it is or is not a good idea, I'm just relaying the point of the Sandbox video.
Specifically the U2 spy plane.
@@LincolnMiller-di8qv If you're talking about the real C-130 that landed, then yes, they were also thinking about U-2s.
I'm referring to the point of the Sandbox video from a few days ago.
Takeoff sequence is a 21st century corollary to the Doolittle Raid of 1942. Aircraft that have no business doing so, taking off from aircraft carriers.
Well on a carrier, you can more or less subtract 20+ knots from your ground speed.
Also, Hercs don't give a shit; they go where they want
Well.. That was different.. Great mission, fun to watch. Miss the C130Js' coming over us at 200ft..in the dark on NVG.. A400's now but not quite the same.. Great flying peeps.. Thanks.. 👏👏👍
Handbags out at 8:20 😂
That was a good Mission enjoyed it thank you
Fantastic video! Love the concept!
This is what the internet is for. Thank You!!
God Bless yer cotton socks.
Salute to the pilots for the Nutty Professor reference!!! 😉🤣👌
Good Video and Great Landings and flying!!!
Bloody hilarious and well flown, chaps. That’s what I call “Drop shipping”. FYI - Alex at Sandboxx, which I love and thoroughly recommend, suggested that each Herc can carry 2 pallets. I was pleased to see our UK Lords and Masters have said that they’ll recommit to the original order quantity of 138 F-35s. I seem to have gone off topic. Roger and out..
Amazing video. Loved the ending!
I've used that Hercules reference many times. Most people don't get it. Come on, man!
One of the GREAT scenes in all the history of cinema!!!! Nearly shat myself laughing in the theater…Murphy was a genius!
Masterful ! Especially the ending 😁
this is great :) Love your work!
It had to happen, this is GR after all!
No wing waggles in Marine aviation. Wingman is ALWAYS responsible for separation and de-confliction.
Thanks!
The Reason for Using the Hercs instead of FA-18 is Range. The Idea is to use this in Case of China invading Taiwan. With the Big Range of Hercs, the Carrier can keep more Distance to Anti-Ship Missiles stationed on Chinese Mainland.
This was awesome
Looks like a J model with that HUD. It's a stretched version and has the 8 bladed props... I guess the plane is modeled properly but wow was that a short take-off run on the first bird on the left carrier. Now go an' catch a 3 wire! 🙂
GR had a previous Rapid Dragon video where there were more targets than missiles IIRC and deploying from a tight formation seemed to lead to many missiles going for the same targets. Has your deployment changed to give that nice spread?
Honest answer is I'm not sure, I'd have to go see how I did it before.
You guys crack me up, well done Beautiful Boys!
Great video Cap
love those landing . . .
Cool 1 CAP & GR! 😎
Today is my birthday! Thanks for the video! I enjoyed that! 👍
I remember when the 71s flew from Travis, it was always a great sight! Even the C5s flew, it was impressive!
Also, saw a show at Match(March), A10s, F16, F18, C17, all were doing touch an goes, it was a super massive sight to see!
Cheers lads
Have you ever done a spaceshuttle simulation? 30000 engine idle full flaps and speed breaks?
Hey Cap! I have an idea for future anti-ship operations:
Replace half the LRASMs with 6 MALDs each. My logic? No matter how good the LRASM is, some will still be intercepted. Keeping that in mind, why not send the MALDs first so that they'll be the ones intercepted instead. They are cheaper and there are more of them, allowing the fewer LRASMs to have a higher chance of success. It would be more effective and cheaper at the same time as 6 MALDs are still cheaper than 1 LRASM afaik. Love your content!
Doing so would require a lot of autonomous coordination between the MALDs and the LRASMs for a successful strike and maybe DCS can't simulate that.
Now this is content! x
Didn't Sandbox say the Hercs could carry 2 palettes not just one and the C-17 could carry 3?
quick turnaround guys thanks!
That’s that’s pretty cool. I was in 82nd Airborne Division. You guys should do a video on doing heavy drops or full on paratrooper loads if that’s even possible. 😂
Most awesome!!
You had me at the thumbnail lol
The Forrestal CVN 59 was the first Super-carrier. Being old myself I had a model of it as a kid. State of the Art then. The C130 is actually older, so very appropriate.
"No pooh pooh. I repeat No pooh pooh."
Problem is, he says that even when he's done a poo. HUGE miss-information.
Time stamps would be appreciated whenever you quote from the video
Fun operation. Had a. Good laugh at carrier’s landing.
You guys shoulda used the SC-130J models! They have torpedoes! although Im fairly certain the mod for the 130 doesnt let you set it up in that config lol it would be cool though! I was a C130 mech when I was active duty in the corps and I absolutely love that air frame.
Best vid for ages.
I think Simba and Grump should fight about it
According to chatGPT: its Hercules. In English, aircraft names often do not change when pluralized. So, whether you're referring to one C-130 Hercules or multiple C-130 Hercules aircraft, you would use the term "Hercules" for both singular and plural usage.
thx
Saw you guys pop up in ward Carrols video today also, taking over the internet!
"Swap the pallet of money for the pallet of missiles" Yeah, that sounds about right.
The pallet of money cost less😅
"Cap"...the opening takeoff reminded me of the Doolittle raid of WWII. Heavily loaded and may or may not fly after leaving the flight deck!
I love the SandBoxx/Grim Reapers dynamic going on here!
We usually copy them but I noticed they have also started copying us which is super cool.
@@grimreapers wild idea: get Alex to do a guest fly along.
I liked & subbed for the JAG reference. Actually my grandmas favorite show. God bless her . JAG IS LIFE
Historically, A KC-130 Did Land And Take Off From A USN Carrier!! And Ironically, The Carrier Used Was USS Forrestal(CV-59)!!
It wasn’t a KC130….it was an empty C130 flown by Captain James Flatley a naval aviator and son of the famous WW2 ace. It was done to evaluate the possibility of delivering cargo to the ship and was found to be too hard on the equipment to be beneficial to regularly use.
@tomdolan9761 The Aircraft, A KC-130F Refueler Transport (BuNo 149798), Was On Loan From The U.S. Marines,
Just so you know, C-130 carries two Rapid Dragon pallets with a max of 6 missiles each, not one pallet of eight due to size restrictions of the cargo hold.
The C-17 can carry up to 5 Rapid Dragon pallets with up to 9 missiles each due to the increased cargo hold height.
Per the sandboxx video you could do 2-3 pallets depending on the size of the plane. The hercules has a longer combat radius, also the LARSMs have longer range than I think you are taking advantage of or maybe that was the ER version
lol...Love the Zero Wing reference...
Snoopy vs The Red Baron.
Ya gotta get the 52s launching decoys in coordination, if possible. Thanks!
21:57 nice
LRGASM for sure
I saw a photo of many airliners all taking off from an airfield on Facebook today! Then I saw this video 😂.
Not sure if you will read this at all but Alex Hollings wrote an article for The National Interest about how the US needs to use C-130s on aircraft carriers for use against the threat of China.
It was published 3 days ago, roughly the same as this video. Coincidence?
I saw this doctrine theory on one of the defense RUclips channels (Sandboxx ?) In the last few days.
I immediately thought of GR and you Cap! Was hoping you'd do this 😊
LOL...that was great!
17:01 an answer, besides deception and speed, is the number; you instantly add 300+ aerial Q-ships to your fleet.
Thanks for the LOLs!
A true herculean task!

CAP, you should check out _Nutty Professor._ Eddie Murphy movie. Classic meal scenes. Funny.
thx
Can C 130s actually launch from a carrier? Thats entirely impressive!!
problem is, they'd take up the entire deck and can't be stowed.
@hughmungus2760 That's kinda what I thought. They are entirely to big to be on a Carrier!
