  • Hi All, we are going through the Jaguar F Pace steering rack issues. This now affects Range Rover Velar owners, as seen on the JLR Power Steering Alliance Group Facebook. Please Share 🙏
We have a call with Dave Reed the FB Group Admin, the group he formed has now gained JLR Goodwill gestures up to 💯 already! The cars suffer from cracks due to water ingress and you lose power steering even in puddles 2in deep.
It seems it’s affecting the 2016/2018 model F Paces the most due to their age. If you are servicing or purchasing an F Pace/Velar, it is advisable to have the steering rack checked as per the video.
Goodwill payments and Hire vehicles are now available to F Pace owners, so do not suffer in silence.
We will do a new video in a month with more updates.
I hope you enjoy these videos and the information helps you going forward.
    Richard

Thanks for highlighting this Richard, I’ll be getting my 2018 Velar checked out at next opportunity thankfully I do keep it covered by JLR extended warranty. 👍

When the power steering fails on a modern car it isn’t like going back to a 1980’s car without power steering. Those cars were lighter, had narrower tyres and most importantly the number of turns lock to lock was higher to give more leverage on the steering wheel. A modern car without power steering is very different- literally undriveable.

I had the steering rack issue on a Discovery Sport. Apparently for this model and the Evoque, the DVLA deemed it was not a safety issue as they 'tested' controlling the car when the electric assistance had failed. However that test doesn't seem to take into account that it wasn't the motor that failed, it was the bolts attaching the motor to the rack (wrong material, corrode and then break). You simply don't know where the bolts will end up. I had one rattling around, and another wedged between the chassis and the motor!! The dealer said it was unsafe to drive at that point and thankfully put me into another car on the spot. There's nothing presumably stopping a wayward bolt from getting stuck somewhere more dangerous. Approx £2500 for a new rack. You need a complete rack as if one of the bolts are snapped, you can't repair it. Racks are in short supply as you might expect! Fortunately it was covered on the DS/Evoque by a (non-safety!) recall.

On lead times for getting a car into a main dealer, if you still have extended warranty and the car is recovered by Jaguar/Land Rover Assist to a dealer, then you effectively jump the Q as they have targets to meet on turnaround times. An un-official benefit of the extended warranty. JLR also have a deal with Enterprise for 'cheap' rental cars for long term issues. You may be reliant on goodwill for this though.

Do the DVSA force manufacturers to recall cars that have safety issues? I'd say a failed steering rack at 70mph is a safety issue.

I had this problem in February 2022 with a 2016 XFS and it cost me over £3500 to repair. Surely the XF and the F Pace use the same rack??? I contacted JLR CEO’s office a few times to no avail as my argument was that a steering rack should not fail at 26000 miles. Also, people were having similar problems with Evoque and Discovery Sport’s at the time. Should I be joining the group and try to claim retrospectively even though I don’t have the car any longer ?

Looking at autodoc the left hand drive steering rack is Bosch and out of stock (i am assuming the right hand drive would also be from Bosch), makes me wonder if its JLR fault for not ordering a bigger batch from Bosch, or Bosch's fault for not supplying to the demand. Makes me also wonder if a car manufacturer can sue a part supplier for a faulty part design? Having worked on my JLR you realise that these cars are bolted together from a load of different car part manufacturers and JLR is the integrator of these components.

Very informative video thanks, is there anything owners who have not yet had this problem can do to prevent it?

I think you can replace the 3 motor bolts with steel ones. I had better look into it. Available on eBay for Landrover

@@AndyK.1 - different fault to most of us, which is the EPAS casing cracking and allowing water to ingress.

Its a shame JLR are getting the blame for this when it is a German built Bosch unit that has failed and obviously not up to the job

I’ve owned enough JLR cars to know one thing about them.
      Never own a JLR car.
My last was a beautiful Jaguar XF which, after having over £10k’s worth of warranty repairs, the engine blew up because of the DPF fault.
It was a few weeks out of the warranty.
JLR basically said, ‘Sue us’ and gave me a >£12k price to repair.
It was the last straw and I sold it for scrap.

You "deserve everything you get" for liking a brand and being a loyal customer, if all you've had are good experiences in the past?
      Trollish comment.
I've had 2x X-Type estates, and they were excellent. One still is. So for me, an F-Pace was a natural progression. What I didn't realise was that this issue even existed until it was too late.
If someone was to say that to my face right after I was deprived of my car and faced with a four figure bill, they would get what THEY deserved: a lesson in manners!
