  • Saving Steve's Tyco Dino Riders T-Rex from Extinction - Vintage 1980s Toy Restoration
    Welcome to the pilot episode of Toy SOS. This is something I've been wanting to create for a while - it's The Repair Shop meets Car SOS but for vintage toys.
    In this episode we meet Steve aka darby_collector on Instagram who has a vintage Tyco Dino Riders T-Rex from the 1980s in need of repair.
    Can it be restored? We'll find out from Steve's reaction when it's revealed to him!!!
    Steve can be found at / darby_collector

    If you wish to be involved in a future episode please get in touch by emailing the address found on this channels about page. Thanks Dave.

    Great premiere episode! Its VERY RARE to see Dino Riders repairs on RUclips so its a great choice for the 1st episode. You gotta hand it to the engineers who worked on these toys, and you did an excellent job on the repair.

    So what product specifically did you use on the tread so I can search for that specific one? And if I happen to have a Rex that actually has intact tread that does not look physically cracked, I know it will still be brittle. is there any product that I can use that can give some restorative property to the existing plastic/rubber tread something like a coating of WD-40 silicon spray or anything?
    Also, I have a very good looking set of armor that has not turned yellow from light damage. It will probably be abnormally bridle, though I hope it is stronger than I expect. The plasticizers were inferior. Is there anything that would have a restorative effect on the hard plastic armor? With short bouts of boiling enough to heat the plastic without warping it have any kind of healing effect? Or, can I further protect the plastic by applying a clear acrylic UV protectant topcoat? Krylon for instance makes one. I do wish there was more in terms of someone casting molds of old armor for reproduction parts or perhaps carefully scanning or designing for 3-D printing. Generally everyone likes old better than you. But seeing as old is about to age out to the point of crumbling, it would be really nice to see one of these far exceeded expectations.

    • @VintageToyRush
      @VintageToyRush  5 месяцев назад

      For the tread, I used an adhesive window insulation tape 10mm wide 1mm thick like this one from amazon www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07L6M6MS2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1 Hope that helps 👍 For restoring rubber tread, I've seen others apply vasoline and let it sink in. Not done this myself so can't vouch for its results and outcomes. Unfortunately for reversing the age of plastic I'm not sure there's much that can be done except to keep it out of sun light etc. Never tried a UV protectant so can't comment on that. Like you say, 3D printing is one way of preserving - this stuff won't last forever in its current form.

    Ha, that's true, the dinosaur is millions of years old, not 35 years. ;) Great restoration of the mechanics. Did you learn your skills on your own, or have school/training to know how to handle these situations? Great! which glue you can suggest for repair tiny small plastic parts in Dino Riders?

    • @VintageToyRush
      @VintageToyRush  8 месяцев назад

      Tough to say as it depends on the plastic. Typically, I use a CA glue for harder plastics and plastic weld for softer plastics. But it's best to test first and also I try to sparingly use the glue by applying with a pin for those smaller parts so it doesn't look a mess 👍

      @@VintageToyRushHello! I have a question, what’s the plastic quality like? And how does it feel? Especially comparing it to modern toys, because base on what I heard, most modern toys are using lower grade plastic, I collect Jurassic World figures, made by Mattel, and their figures are a hit and miss, plastic quality is not the best, sometimes it’s alright, others feel cheap.

    • @VintageToyRush
      @VintageToyRush  24 дня назад

      Dino Riders are notorious for being fragile. The Dinosaur plastic is good quality but after 40 years can become brittle. It's the accessories that are the problem. Poor plastic making it difficult to find complete unbroken parts! The figures are ok though, although a little soft!
