    Strength Coach Brian Klepacki, MS, CSCS, FMS, CISSN has over 15 years of training experience. Brian shows you step by step how to design a personal training program for any client at any skill level. Ultimately the goal for ANY personal trainer or strength coach is to instruct a quality workout that meets the goals of his or her client. That goes for beginner level, intermediate or advanced level clients.
    By the way, Brian is more than your average personal trainer...in fact he really ISN'T a personal trainer at all. He's a strength coach.
    He graduated college with a Masters degree in exercise science and got his certification with the NSCA as a certified strength and conditioning specialist...notice it says strength coach and not a personal trainer. He is ALL about human performance and gladly shares his insights and expertise to help any trainer over the globe create the right PT session for their client.

    Good Morning. Left a 👍. Just a couple of comments. Not a personal trainer- just retired and attempting to improve ‘quality of life’ and increase my chances of actually sitting in front of the TV and watch the first ‘humans’ land on Mars. There are only two-to-three people on RUclips that I follow on a regular basis- and, you are one those three. Suggestions- not to be misinterpreted as a derogatory critique. (1) a smart board would have increase ‘situation awareness’ and ‘time efficiency’ (preparation and use of current technology is key when presenting); (2) your thoughts on an ‘staggered implementation strategy’ allowing a more accurate assessment and a more accurate re-assessment; (3) your thoughts on ‘static vs dynamic’ at each stage of the implementation phase (those of us in our Golden Sneakers journey have ‘not limitations’ but ‘challenges’ that can be overcome through good information and as you mentioned “the right program.” Thank You for the wealth of information you provide in all of your videos. Happy Holidays and a Healthy and Prosperous 2018, and beyond.

    I have a question. When working with a client, how do you assess the weight that is appropriate for them in each part of the workout?
    For example, when doing heavy compound movements, we would have the client do 4-6 reps. But how do you decide the weight that this client should lift for these reps? How do you know the maximum that they can lift, and use that to determine how heavy the weight show be? Is there an assessment for this, and a formula to calculate it? Or is it just guesswork based on observation?
    I couldn’t find any videos that talk about this 😕

    I am a NASM-CPT, CES, Trainer with about 5 years of training under my belt. I know you explained how you gained an understanding of the assessment and program design process from all your experience and schooling. Can you explained how you possibly assess and train a client with in only a 30-60 minute window. I truly support what you said about a good trainer will not simply just throw a client into a workout. I know from experience that I can not sleep well with out knowing the biomechanics, functional anatomy, and tendencies of a client. This is very hard for me to do with out working myself to death. I find it interesting but hard because there is so much to know about what each client pacifically requires to be the best they can be. FMS, is something I've learned and used before. Is there a certain list of assessments that are not just as obvious as a overhead squat assessment, that you have learned to be effective and quicker at helping you obtain crucial information on a client. As someone who survives off this trade I'm trying to find as many ways to become more efficient and productive all on a small time frame while still appealing to each client so that I can retain them every week, month, and year. Any thoughts?

    • @Criticalbench
      @Criticalbench  5 лет назад +16

      Man, you definitely sound just how i was struggling a few years back. Knowledge IS power but more knowledge comes greater responsibility AND challenges. It is impossible to get a FULL assessment with a client with just an hour a week. No one can do it. When this happens, you as the professional must make the best and most honest assessment based on the time and resources you're given. Some clients will be easy to assess and some others will take hours and hours of testing. It really comes down to what the client needs / wants. Some clients just want to sweat and lose weight. And if you don't do that for them, they will leave. Trust me, I've had clients where I gave a 30s assessment to see what kind of training style they wanted without sacrificing what they actually needed. You can't win them all but the BEST way to keep a client coming back is to keep them happy regardless of what they actually need... it's a tough situation but use your best judgement. -Coach Brian.

    • @Coolbreeze24
      @Coolbreeze24 5 лет назад +19

      I am a ACSM certified training with 7 years of training experience. What I have discovered through the years, is the need for an assessment questionnaire. This can be something the client can fill out before the first session with all the questions you need to start designing a program. It's also helpful to know cause and effect for the more common issues people may have. An example being, someone with arthritis in a joint is typically going to have some weakness, difficultly with some movements and stiffness in the affected joint. Having modifications for exercises is also important especially once the session begins. You never want to waste a client's session time trying to figure what exercise they can tolerate. A trainer is constantly assessing the client's movements and ability to better structure and design a program. Feedback from the client after movements can also help with knowing if an exercise is effective or something else needs to be done. Documentation during the client's rest period will give you something to review once the session is over with and help you prepare future sessions. Lastly, I've learned you can spend an hour designing the perfect session for a client and before the session they complain of certain issues they are dealing with, WHICH WILL HAPPEN, and the exercises for that session may then become useless, so having the ability to think on the fly and have alternate exercises already in mind will be a tremendous skill that will make you indispensable as a trainer.

      Optic500 I’m not sure if this is the case or not but If you’re a trainer at a corporate gym I do believe you must take whatever clients they give you but if you are an independent contractor then you can fully choose who you work with! Definitely if you are independent you have every right to tell a client that you and them are not a good fit in a respectful way and perhaps even recommend them to someone else. Hope this helps

    • @sarahsarita4852
      @sarahsarita4852 4 года назад

      Well, I hope you graduated. From May if you started working, there's some experience on your sleeve. You don't have to worry about which exercise or program for who. It's not a one size fits all. I give a cocktail of exercises just to beat the 'no change at all' at assessment. But I know what % of the different exercises I give. Some get fat loss with more cardio while others with resistance . Also don't be afraid to try and err. You will learn from it. Inform the client if they don't have progress in their goals. Power of info/ knowledge helps.

    Very informative video! I have a question, for a % based program, how do you figure out how much weight for a certain number of reps? Let’s say if it’s 3 sets of 8 reps, how much should the weight be? Since 8 RM is 80% of 1RM, how much lower should the weight be? Is 10-15% lower a good range? Thank you!

    • @Criticalbench
      @Criticalbench  5 лет назад

      You would first need to determine what your 1RM is of that particular exercise. Lifting at 75-80% of your 1RM is a fair range however it comes down to what your overall program looks like & what you're wanting to achieve

      Hey Tara, i saw this comment and even though it was 3 years ago I'd like to give you some advice in case you are still looking to go into wellness coaching. If you want to be a wellness coach, don't wait until you have qualifications, just go for it. Pick a specific area in which you feel you can generate premium results for your clients. There is no "one size fits all" training program for every individual. For example, a training program for a swimmer is going to be very different than a training program designed for a power lifter.

    Hello!
    I am a personal trainer for the past 15yrs and my specialty is really understanding what clients need out of their workouts each time we get together. I've never made a specific program for anyone because my instincts have been very good. I have always done an assessment first and as you said in your video, things are constantly changing. What I would like to know is what do you use to keep the assessments and workouts? Do you have an app or templet you prefer? Im just starting an online business and have to keep a more detailed program for my old and new clients. Appreciate any advice you might have! Really enjoy your videos, super informative! Thanks! : )

      Well is it for a beginner, intermediate, or advanced lifter? For beginners and intermediates a linear periodization plan would work great (look up prilipens chart). As you get more advanced there will have to be more variation as your body can't recover from the heavier weight

    Your honest opinion. I bought NASM a while ago but been procrastinating a lot in studying. I’ve been lifting for over 8 years. I’m kinda giving up on the course and might just jump into becoming a trainer off the back. What would you say in this case? Plus not planning to work for a Gym.

      Well this is your call. What I will say is that having a certification from a recognized institution has it's benefits in insurance for you as well as your client and there are a lot of people that feel more comfortable hiring/ working with a trainer who has their certification.

    I have a question about this. I learned a similar break down or “template” in my certification course BUT the part that I am always confused about is where do you add time in for cardio? For example, if your client’s primary goal is weight loss. Like this model seems great for a lifting routine. What am I missing? (Thank you in advance).

    • @Rehlingen007
      @Rehlingen007 4 года назад +1

      If the primary goal is weight-loss and the client has bad stamina, u could do it in continuation of the warm up.
      You could also focus on the strength program and do a finishing cirkel training like: kettle-bell swing 45sec, 15 sec rest, 45 sec burpees, 15 sec rest and finish with a 15 kcal row or assult bike, 1 min rest, repeat 3-5 times! (Sorry for bad gramma) :))

      mypthub.net Web-based with a very clean layout. A ton of video and picture descriptions of exercises. You do have the ability to spend the workouts directly to the client and make modifications to the workouts. It is a paid service, but if you have a few clients, it's worth the cost. An app that works great for android devices is FitNotes. It has a free version and a very inexpensive paid version ($4.99). A GAME CHANGER when it comes to tracking training sessions. It gives you the ability to either email the workout or send a file your client can load if they also have the FitNotes app on their phone.
