My Problem with Electric Guitar (AND HOW TO FIX IT)

  • In this video I tackle an issue in the approach and technique that plagues some players. I believe the solution to this issue will combat many issues in people’s guitar playing (and other pizzicato string instruments for that matter) and help players to create their own melodic voice on the instrument.
This can also apply to other instruments but please try this at your own discretion.

The real issue is your not good at playing with a heavy touch. Also because you are super biased and your mind is made up, you play sloppy on purpose and are hindering the fairness of your comparison. This is not rocket science just do some research in to some of the greats with heavy touch, and you will be saved.

I love dynamic discipline as much as the next guy, but sometimes I like to just turn it up freakishly loud cause it relieves my stress for some odd reason

Ohhh I feel this sometimes 😂. And yep turning the amp up really loud will still retain the rich tone from a soft to moderate touch on the strings. Crank the amp up and enjoy!

I totally agree, that playing soft with the least amount of tension is always the best, however I have to say that even thought the "technique" is not ideal, electric guitar has many uses in many genres of music, and therefore is utilized in many different ways. firstly "American Idiot" normal would use distortion to hide the imperfections in technique. The fact is if a player wants a certain sound, using different techniques to achieve that sound may not lead to the correct sound. They may want/need to use that hard strumming and or a distortion pedal. Secondly, I feel as though electric guitar is a bit of a different instrument than classical guitar. although I still like your example of changing instruments to showcase the usefulness/need for dynamics on classical guitar i feel that they are just too far away in mechanical differences to compare the tonal differences using technique.(not to say there not comparable).
and lastly, I love Tomo Fujita, he is an amazing guitarist and teacher, but I just cant say that he "pioneered" this "technique" I would have to say that in reality he has just been one to promote the use of fundamental practice dynamic playing, like the great players that came before him. In reality even though it does come with technique its really is just the use of dynamics getting developed when needed in the set circumstance.
    liked the video thanks :)

Thanks for the comment Elijah! Yes, at the end of the day my style of electric guitar playing is extremely different from others. For more context I am a final year university student and I have seen people approach jazz standards or classical pieces with a heavy hand. So that is why I am mildly disturbed by hard playing 😂. Good on you for having a bit more of an open mind to the different ways that people play! I will admit I am a bit tunnel visioned as in many cases I do need to be quite versatile as a session musician and the dynamic playing technique has won me good amounts of work. So that’s pretty much the context surrounding what formed my opinion. I also chose American Idiot on the spot because that’s a song that I used to bash the chords on and my family did get really annoyed by the noise 😂. I play the song closer to Weird Al’s parody of the song but if I did try to apply for the band of the musical production I would probably be let go instantly for playing it softly. I really appreciate your two cents on this! Have an awesome day.

this was an interesting video, but i think you don’t give the electric guitar a fair shot. there’s a visceral feeling that comes with plugging into a loud amp with a fuzz pedal and wailing away. blues and rock players play really aggressive and it adds to the sound. albert king’s crosscut saw would be way worse if he didn’t bite into every note. i think if you just tried to play a bit harder you could find some really cool sounds. dynamic control is still important, but most electric guitars are set up for more aggressive playing compared to classical guitar.

It’s interesting hearing you talk about this, and it makes a lot of sense. I’ve been working hard on learning black & death metal tremolo and one of the tricks is to play VERY softly, letting the gain & the amp do the work. You physically can’t play at those speeds if you’re hitting hard. It’s really interesting to think about how that plays into the tone too
    Thanks!

That’s a good example, metal music that is perceived as heavy music actually needs soft playing.
One of my friends and colleagues is a metal guitarist and his movements are very economical in both his hands. Even with his strumming you can hear all the notes singing clearly, so the tone he is producing is very rich.
I hope this video helps your practice routine in some sort of way! Thanks for your comment :)

You're failing to account for the fact that playing hard is an intentional effect in rock guitar. Imagine trying to play a punk song with cute polite chords. Quit trying to masquerade your personal preference for a soft touch as "better technique"

Okay, you don't like loud music? Cool? Your personal aesthetic values do not dictate how others SHOULD approach their instruments. Not everything is about playing as technically perfect as possible. Yes, playing softer is great advice in some situations, in some genres, when that aesthetic fits the music better.
There are a ton of songs, genres, situations, etc where playing softly is absolutely not the right move. It's particularly funny how you prescribe your classical aesthetic values to Green Day, a punk band. Punk is not about beauty. It's not about the clarity of the harmonic value of every chord. It's about a feeling, an attitude. An attitude that simply does not translate as well when you're not playing with aggression.
If that's not your thing, cool. But don't act all snooty and pretend that punk musicians, and musicians that play in loud genres, just aren't on your level and don't understand their instrument as well as you do. The typical classical musician elitism is coming through strong here.

if youre playing smells like teen spirit, you do need both tho because the riff is hard and on the wound low strings and the verse is soft on the high unwound strings.
obviously music requires different dynamic levels, thats what those little Ps and Fs mean, they arent the fucking lyrics, if it says forte the you play loud and if youre writing music you can imagine a forte or a piano marking yourself
imo it's important moreso than to have correct dynamics ABSOLUTELY, to have the correct dynamics RELATIVELY, and it's more important than that to have a good tone that heightens the music rather than distracts from it and i think thats what the video was saying and youre just a punk bitch who wants it to be wrong so you can be lazy, which isnt very punk

@@somanayrthis dude's takeaway is sheltered and doesn't realize that different styles of music value certain techniques over others because of a sound associated with it. also his rough playing sounded like shit because it's very clearly not what he practices
