In the book John Carpenter: Prince of Darkness, he explains that he and Kurt Russell set out to write a different film, but when they started reminiscing about how fun the first one was they accidentally wrote the same movie.

There's a story that John Carpenter was at Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn's house having dinner with his family. Carpenter brought up the idea of a sequel and flippantly said something about not sure if Kurt could fit into Snake's outfit.
Kurt excused himself and came back a few minutes later wearing it. That was the sign to John that he was going to make the movie.
I'm sure it's exaggerated, but yeah, Kurt kept the outfit and was still able to fit into it

  • @wubranch1

Snake’s outfit in the beginning was the original wardrobe from the first movie. They wardrobe people were concerned about re-creating the clothes. Luckily, Kurt had kept the outfit after the first film.

They need to make a new Snake Plissken movie where Snake’s son (played by Wyatt Russell) has to rescue him from the government officials he pissed off in Escape From NY and Escape From LA.

The one thing I always remember about this film positively is that basketball scene. The idea of his last shot was not about BS or not. Its about, when you truly got nothing else to lose, just make one last impossible shot. Either way, one in a thousand chance is better than no chance at all.

    • @Nester665

Take the shot and hope the CGI budget takes the wheel.

    • @SuRoFo
      @SuRoFo 2 года назад

It's not about how how BS the last shot is, it's been done numerous times even in real life. It's just that it's mathematically impossible to pull off 10 points in 10 seconds with no 3 point shot, especially if you were doing layups for most of the points like Snake was. Even if you were doing Lillard style half court heaves each time successfully you'd still be burning too much time getting the ball back.

    • @gutz1981
      @gutz1981 2 года назад +1

@@SuRoFo I think you missed the point. In this context of making 2 points with 10 seconds each time (not just 10 seconds in general) its about the idea of if you gonna lose, throw your "Hail Marry" final attempt and whatever comes of it is what it is. Any chance is better than no chance, and I think that is a lesson that is important sometimes.

Legend has it that Kurt Russell sank that full-court shot in a single take. No special effects, no multiple tries. It was one-and-done.
And what if Snake hadn't tried shooting at them before he left for L.A.? They gave him a gun loaded with a clip of blanks. He could've immediately died in his first gunfight if he tried shooting at hostiles with those blanks and their hopes that Snake would succeed his mission would've been dashed in a hurry.

They were going to do another. Escape from Earth - In the 2000s, there was a proposed second sequel, often mentioned by Carpenter and Russell in interviews prior to the release of Escape from L.A. The concept was that Earth was the only place left for Plissken to escape. After Escape from L.A. failed to attract much business, the project never materialized.
In August 2006, an Internet rumor suggested that the project was actively being pursued by Paramount at Russell's urging, but the rumor was revealed to be untrue.
    Escape from Mars
It was rumored that in 1996, the script to Ghosts of Mars originally started off as a potential Snake Plissken sequel.Entitled Escape from Mars, the story would have been largely much the same; however, after Escape from L.A. failed to make much money at the box office, the studio did not wish to make another Plissken movie.Snake Plissken was then changed to "Desolation Williams," and the studio also insisted that Ice Cube be given the part.Except that it was confirmed in a tweet that this is all completely false and Ghosts of Mars is not a repurposed sequel.

Fun fact: Jamie Lee Curtis was the voice of the narrator in both films. Also, Kurt Russell practiced basketball between takes so he could make every shot in that scene.
Also, there was a "Escape From..." movie planned. The rumor was it was "Escape From Earth". However, the second did so poorly, it never happened. John Carpenter first used C.G.I. in "Memoirs Of The Invisible Man" (1992) with Chevy Chase, Darrell Hannah, and Sam Neil. Though, it hasn't aged well, at that time, it was pretty incredible some of the effects they used.
Lastly, there has been a remake of "Escape From New York" planned for a few years now. Last I heard, Robert Rodriguez ("Dusk Till Dawn" (1996), "Sin City" (2004)) was on board to direct with John Carpenters blessing. However, much debate has sparked over whom will play Snake. Rumors were Gerard Buttler, and Kurt Russell's son Wyatt Russell. Then Wyatt said he'd never take the iconic role.

An EMP wont -shut down- destroy a GENERATOR ... so producing power wont be a problem ... as long as your generator has no microchips or other electronic components in it. The task of rebuilding is basically "getting chip factories up and running again" ... and then replacing what was lost. You could also put an emergency supply of "your favorite chips" in a bunch of layers of a Faraday cage (depending on how "paranoid" you are about the strength of the attack); dont break the cage though, i.e. dont have any power / data cables go into it.

True story: a couple of months before this came out, I remember seeing the poster of Escape from L.A at my local cinema and thinking it was a sequel to Captain Ron ; I was thirteen years old at the time and weirdly had never heard of Escape From New York, even though I was a Kurt Russell fan by that point.
I must confess, I used to think this film was awful, but I watched "New York" and "L.A" both back to back about two weeks ago and I was struck by how well this film has aged (bad C.G.I notwithstanding) in retrospect. I found elements of the plot surprisingly resonant, with the president's wayward daughter being corrupted online (essentially) by a charismatic figure and the world becoming more and more closed off and castigating of the most basic of necessities.
As for Russell coming back and doing another one... Hey, If Stallone can do a Rambo film in his seventies... I don't see why Kurt shouldn't bring back Snake for one last mission.

But smaller battery-powered devices might be OK after a reboot, any generators that weren't hooked up to anything should still work, and anything that wasn't plugged in at the time or had a good quality surge protector should also be okay. I think it'd take a couple of decades to recover, but the world wouldn't be completely free of electronic technology during that period.
Interestingly, big solar flares can generate EMP-like transient voltages that destroy electronic equipment. Satellites in high orbits have to be EMP shielded because they don't have the Earth's magnetic field to protect them, but the Carrington Event of 1859 was powerful enough to punch through the Earth's magnetic field and cause damage on the ground. It did a decent amount of damage to telegraph lines at the time, and would probably have done substantial damage to modern power grids if they had existed back then. Higher latitudes, like Canada, Russia, and Antarctica would suffer the brunt, because the Earth's magnetic field is closest to the ground at the poles. Stuff near the equator would be at less risk.
And yeah, the CGI was bad even at the time the movie came out. Films like Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park had already shown that CGI could be much, much higher quality than this. Clearly the film's effects were done on a tight budget. Whoever did the effects would certainly have known that they weren't very good, but either they didn't have the time or the rendering budget to do them right.

We don't even need an EMP to crash the US. The joke is that because nobody wants to spend money, the Infrastructure is so old that it is unhackable... but that also means that there's only like 10 people in the country that know how to fix certain problems if they come up.

I was really disappointed with this when I saw it on Opening Night theatrically because I loved the original so much as a kid, I was expecting a sequel not a remake. I still love Bruce Campbell’s Surgeon General character and Kurt kicks ass as usual.

Its not a remake, but if thats how you want to see it and be dissapointed,go ahead. I dont see it at all like that, because its not. There might be similarities, but its enough differences and well done to make with more then worth the effort to watch it..

@@krisa990 I like the movie but it's a remake. John Carpenter himself, IIRC, said in an interview that Escape from L.A. was the movie he wanted to make the first time.

I've heard the reason why the FX worked turned out that way was because the studio pushed up the release by several months before the SFX was even completed.

There was supposed to be a third one called Escape from Earth, the script was written and completed, but because the box office ranking didn't reach John Carpenter's expectation they didn't go ahead with it, also Kurt Russle is supposedly planning a remake if the first one but a totally different story line this time, and he would play Halk instead of Snake

It's a lay up meta satire remake / sequel BUT .. I was always excited by the end of the film setting up a third film that would be very different. Sadly it never came to be. It takes all three more serious elements from the first that were cheesy or corny but didn't play then for laughs to clearly making it the joke. Both are fun in their own ways.

There was a planned 3rd sequel which would have been called Escape from Earth, but since this movie was a box office failure it got scrapped. A 3rd movie today, maybe, only if they make it RIGHT! I even heard a video game sequel was in talks back in the day, I think that could be more fitting now & have Kurt Russell do the voice of Snake Plissken. They should even let John Carpenter & his son Cody make the music score for different levels (& still have the theme song of course). But again, if so, they should do it right! No rush development, otherwise it's gonna be glitchy as hell like many other games today!

We had both the people and the knowledge to do both things, make everything by hand and reconstruct technology because people who know things is not dead. It would take a while but just a couple of decades. I don't think we will get into a post apocalyptic world without technology. I'm chilean, I'm a civilian but worked as an office man in a police station in 2003. We didn't had computers, I had to borrow my dad's old typing machine to do paperwork. By that time I didn't even had a ATM card... so at least Chile would do fine in that scenario, we would just have to write everything by hand, like we did just four decades ago 😸

"New Movie with Snake....now" Check out Lockout. It has the same vibe as Snake Pliskin style movies but more futuristic.
EMP would probably be an issue for a month. Then a slow return to normal over the course of a year or so.
The impact of an EMP is a bit overstated outside of a few key things like power grids.
Machines will work fine, its electronics, not things that are powered by electricity but things that need processors and stuff like that.

A simple Faraday cage to seal extra electronic equipment and their batteries inside of a steel garbage can sealed with aluminum tape on the lid seam would be a prudent thing to do. If you have an extra older vehicle that have little to no electronic circuit boards in them with the battery disconnected would also be a prudent thing to do, because they'll still work. Ham radios inside a steel can is a good idea. Generators sealed in aluminum foil would also work. Problem is, you'd have to fight off everyone who would see you driving down the road.

Dr stone basically sets the bar at a few years for a team of scientists and craftsmen to go from absolutely nothing except lucky finds of certain materials to space race, and that is slowed down thanks to three wars!
so yeah a global EMP would be a few weeks at most.
