I'm pretty much the opposite knitter to you. I basically am just looking for an excuse to knit stockinette in the round. I can, and will, do more complicated things (lace, cables colourwork (as long as it is only 2 colours to a row and the floats are short)) if I'm motivated by the finished object, but zombie knitting is my happy place.
If you are interested in historic knitting, I'd like to recommend Roxanne Richardson AKA RoxKnits, she's knitting a sweater from every decade starting in 1890, although she isn't knitting them in sequence. Also, Engineering Knits has done several late 19th century knits. Both on RUclips.

I’ve been watching so many historical/vintage type sewers this year, but as much more of a knitter myself, it’s nice to see some knitting chat in that same vein. -if you're finding the common light weight yarns heavy i'd advice to check holst garn, it's a danish brand, their yarns are really great quality and quite affordable even more than jamison and smith, the yarn have a spinning oil tho so you have to give it a good path after finishing the garment. also i would advice to stay away from superwash yarns like cascade it tend to be quite heavy and loss it's shape with wear and there are alot of alternatives with much higher qualities like knitting for olives for example it's supeeer soft, airy, and affordable, it also thiner than the normal fingering weight -regarding the fabel knitwear patterns, Helene tends to go for the cropped length for most of her patterns and most of them are bottom up so you can't really try it on to check the length but i found it's helpful to lay it over an exsiting jumper or blouse that i like the length of and knit until it hit that length then join the sleeves, also unlike the vintage patterns where they have a standards modern patterns are way different so always check the measurments before choosing the size because M in one pattern is waaay different than another pattern and always take the upper arm circumstances in account (i had to learnt it the hard way) but to the arms makes a big difference espicially in a bottom up jumpers like the nutcracker -regarding the steek, knitting doesn't unravel sideways especially Shetland yarn it is very very sticky so even if you missed up the steek completely nothing will happen and in worse case you can easily felt it and it will never move even if you tried to unravel it initially edit: sorry it's a very lengthy comment 😅
This has inspired me to pick up my knitting again. They all look fantastic. When you mentioned looking for 3ply weight yarn, my mind immediately went to Bendigo woollen mill - I will rave all day about how good their wool is.
I've heard from other knitters that it is good quality wool, but knits up to a higher ply than is labelled as. What's your experience with the smaller plys?

I am sad to hear about the problems with the nutcracker sweater as I am a brand new knitter who was greatly inspired by Fabled knitwear and vintage knitwear to learn how to knit so I could do them. I am glad the other fabled knitwear pattern went smoothly. That gives me hope.
I have a collection of vintage knitting patterns from the 1940's to the 1960's. In the 1940's patterns, many of them required the knitter/crocheter/sewer to use scraps. That was due to everything needed to be rationed. And, I knit a lot of keyhole scarves. And, I gave a few of those from the 1950's when they were popular. Also, ponytail hats were popular in the 1950's and 1960's. And, they've made a comeback in recent years. They're called messy bun hats now. I also knit a headband from a pattern from the 1960's. I just knit it in the round, and did Knit 1 Purl two rib. I had one done by the time I got to Cleveland when I went to go visit my brother.

I like to have 3 different types of knitting/crochet projects on the go - the easy knit knit knit things that I can sit on the sofa & watch TV with my son & keep my hands busy; something small enough to fit in a pencil case to work on if I'm waiting in the car or on my lunch break (socks, at the moment as my 2021 goal is to make a pair of socks a month); and something that I have to think about as I work it in my calm hideout space - 1 lace cowl completed as a gift, now doing my 1st crochet blanket, which will also be a gift. I love my twinset more than I thought I would before I made it, but it is dk weight so good at keeping me warm, not so good as an intermediate piece for spring & autumn. Will need to think about finer yarn!
I love the idea of having different levels of knitting project on the go at once. I have an upstairs knitting project and a downstairs knitting project to avoid unnecessary trips up the stairs but I hadn't thought about difficulty. I think I should cast on another project!

Some fantastic knitting !! - I also love vintage knitting patterns and have 'played' with them for many years with greater and lesser degrees of success - but the 'archive' is a real treasure trove and I can never resist patterns in thrift shops which are pre- the 1960s which (sadly) popularised those unattractive (to me anyway) 'TV friendly knitting' designs - in rather 'blank' and increasingly bulky stocking stitch. Looking forward to more of your knitting in 2021!
I've done a lot more knitting than sewing this year! For the first time I'm starting to feel less like a beginner and more like a somewhat intermediate knitter which is very exciting as I can now knit more exciting things. I have been very much influenced by this video as I have just impulse bought the Tudor Roses book! Not sure if I'm at the level for it yet but perhaps it can be ~aspirational~

For finding vintage yarn I would look into Susan Crawford. I think she struggled to find true 3-ply vintage yarn, so she developed her own range for the Vintage Shetland Project.

Norwegian patterns are not for the beginner so much vagueness, i find vintage patterns easier to knit from. I still have bought some of the fabel knitwear patterns, but the first one I ever knit made me want to rip my hair out because there was a mistake in the pattern and I hadn't updated my pdf so didn't realize

There is a Facebook group called vintage pattern library the shares vintage patterns and yarn tips etc. Lots of ppl recommend the bendigo woolen mills yarn extremely affordable and also the 3ply comes on a cone
You've inspired me to get back to knitting jumpers because this year I've been making a lot of socks. I've also made several lengths of Victorian lace using patterns from Engineering Knits with crochet yarn - after that the sock yarn seems really bulky.

2ply. What size needles and what gauge? 3ply. What needle size and what gauge? I want to do finer knits. I have had my moms old magazines from the 20's thru to the 50's. I have been afraid to make anything as of yet!

I also love 1940's style, but what I don't like is how especially all knitted 40's jumpers have such very narrow (tight) necklines! I just can't wear them at all, I find them very unflattering (and I do have a long neck, so it's not that). I really need wide open necklines in my clothes, it's so much more feminine too :) As a lover of vintage & historical fashions, thanks so much for the tip of the Tudor Roses book! I hadn't heard of it before this, and loved the look of that cardigan so much that reserved the book from the library right away (luckily it was to be found there)! :)
Yes the 1940s and the 50s loved a high neckline! But the Tudor Roses book has got a few beautiful boat neck style designs so I hope you find something to suit in there!
I’m in genuine shock. You are so incredibly talented! Every single thing you have knitted and sewn this year are simply stunning. I legit have never seen anyone hand-knit anything have as complicated as what you’ve done much less the quantity of garments in a year. Like holy-moly! I almost wish I had the time and energy to pick up knitting now but 1. I’m just learning to sew so let’s not get ahead of ourselves lol and 2. I don’t think my wrists could take the repetitive motion and 3. I live in Florida so it’s usually too hot to wear anything knit 😅😅 I can’t wait to see what incredible things you create in 2021. @@RetroClaude I totally get that!! I grew up outside of Boston and miss sweater weather season so much. Where I'm at in Florida gets chilly (usually in the 10-15*C but on the rare occasion in December or January it'll get down to 4*C at night) but nothing like what you get in the UK or what I grew up with in Massachusetts. So I only get to whip out my sweaters or long sleeved shirts a few times a year. But cardigans!! Those I should invest more in because when the aircon is blasting in Florida summers, you can get pretty cold when stuck inside all day 😂

I really enjoyed your knits in review. However, the Nutcracker jumper --- the color and the lines of bobbles made me think of a crocodile. The patterns in Tudor Rose are knitting that I aspire to.
I love it all! I'm gonna need to do that nutcracker jumper myself. I'm working on my first ever cabled project currently, it's just a simple double color cabled scarf, but I hope to eventually be able to make things this good.

I loved the white sweater, of course, and was glad you made very différent designs, colours toi because many internet knitters only make grey and beige baggy things. I find it sad neverthless that you did not try to improve the one you are wearing, with extra side pièces perhaps ? Wish you the best and great knits in 2021 !
I'm a beginner crocheter, what yarn do you recommend (from experience that as a long wear life) or at least some tips to look out for. I've seen Wool and the Gang and We are Knitters recommended many times by other youtubers. I really love all your projects 💘
For long wearing I would go for one of the big established brands, like Rowans, over indie dyers or smaller producers. In my experience the dye is less likely to run and they don't bobble as quickly. Although a good knitwear comb is always a good idea for hand knits. I also think part of the reason the WAK yarn went so fluffy is because it is single ply, just one strand twisted on itself, as opposed to 2 ply, which is two strands twisted together. I hope that helps! 💚

I just saw a Miss Marple episode with one of those jumpers in it the episode is A Murder is Announced. The short sleeve striped patterned one.

There is a Facebook group called vintage pattern library the shares vintage patterns and yarn tips etc. Lots of ppl recommend the bendigo woolen mills yarn extremely affordable and also the 3ply comes on a cone
You've inspired me to get back to knitting jumpers because this year I've been making a lot of socks. I've also made several lengths of Victorian lace using patterns from Engineering Knits with crochet yarn - after that the sock yarn seems really bulky.

Have you looked at Susan Crawford's website? Her Fenella yarn may be the type of 'vintage' yarn you are searching for. Have you come across her books 'A Stitch in Time' volumes 1 and 2. I'm sure you would enjoy them. Happy Knitting! Jx

I also love 1940's style, but what I don't like is how especially all knitted 40's jumpers have such very narrow (tight) necklines! I just can't wear them at all, I find them very unflattering (and I do have a long neck, so it's not that). I really need wide open necklines in my clothes, it's so much more feminine too :) As a lover of vintage & historical fashions, thanks so much for the tip of the Tudor Roses book! I hadn't heard of it before this, and loved the look of that cardigan so much that reserved the book from the library right away (luckily it was to be found there)! :)
Yes the 1940s and the 50s loved a high neckline! But the Tudor Roses book has got a few beautiful boat neck style designs so I hope you find something to suit in there!

I’m in genuine shock. You are so incredibly talented! Every single thing you have knitted and sewn this year are simply stunning. I legit have never seen anyone hand-knit anything have as complicated as what you’ve done much less the quantity of garments in a year.
Like holy-moly! I almost wish I had the time and energy to pick up knitting now but 1. I’m just learning to sew so let’s not get ahead of ourselves lol and 2. I don’t think my wrists could take the repetitive motion and 3. I live in Florida so it’s usually too hot to wear anything knit 😅😅

@@RetroClaude I totally get that!! I grew up outside of Boston and miss sweater weather season so much. Where I'm at in Florida gets chilly (usually in the 10-15*C but on the rare occasion in December or January it'll get down to 4*C at night) but nothing like what you get in the UK or what I grew up with in Massachusetts. So I only get to whip out my sweaters or long sleeved shirts a few times a year.
But cardigans!! Those I should invest more in because when the aircon is blasting in Florida summers, you can get pretty cold when stuck inside all day 😂

I really enjoyed your knits in review. However, the Nutcracker jumper --- the color and the lines of bobbles made me think of a crocodile. The patterns in Tudor Rose are knitting that I aspire to.
I love it all! I'm gonna need to do that nutcracker jumper myself. I'm working on my first ever cabled project currently, it's just a simple double color cabled scarf, but I hope to eventually be able to make things this good.

I loved the white sweater, of course, and was glad you made very différent designs, colours toi because many internet knitters only make grey and beige baggy things. I find it sad neverthless that you did not try to improve the one you are wearing, with extra side pièces perhaps ? Wish you the best and great knits in 2021 !

I'm a beginner crocheter, what yarn do you recommend (from experience that as a long wear life) or at least some tips to look out for. I've seen Wool and the Gang and We are Knitters recommended many times by other youtubers. I really love all your projects 💘
For long wearing I would go for one of the big established brands, like Rowans, over indie dyers or smaller producers. In my experience the dye is less likely to run and they don't bobble as quickly. Although a good knitwear comb is always a good idea for hand knits. I also think part of the reason the WAK yarn went so fluffy is because it is single ply, just one strand twisted on itself, as opposed to 2 ply, which is two strands twisted together. I hope that helps! 💚
