Rewatched the movie only recently as my mother was in the hospital. Thank you so much for these series of videos, just lost my mother to cancer only yesterday and been struggling with coping with the loss. She sacrificed her embassy job to live in the US and struggled thru poverty to give me and my brother a decent life. She battled cancer for 9 years, still cooking and doing things around the house, till her final days where she couldn't even walk. We had to carry her to the hospital where we saw her last few minutes in this world. Still, even with my sorrow, I had people I care about to support and talk with me thru it and can still find the joy and happiness in the world despite wanting to despise it. It sounds dumb but listening to this video gives me hope, so thank you! (edited some spacing errors, sorry)
I watched the beginning of your first "Maquia" video and instantly got a copy and watched it before continuing. A wonderful catharsis for those of us going through a period of loss. My father's film was "Up", now my mother's is "Maquia". Thank you.
@Oreki Houtaru Thank you, I have discovered Hasoda's films just recently, and love them. I have a box set. I only have Summer Wars yet to watch ... for the first time.
zambimaru Same, I of course understand WHY Leilia left, because she was forced to give birth to her daughter and then she wasnt even allowed to see her for the longest time, so she couldnt even become truly attached to her daughter or get to know her, i just feel bad for her daughter who never even knew what was truly happening, and then the woman that she vaguely knew as her mother abruptly attempts to kill herself and leaves.
Devy ?? she was surprised whenever she fell onto the back of the renado and whenever she saw Maquia on the back of it. She was trying to feel like she was flying one last time before she died and felt at peace, free from the chains of being "owned" by the king.
Yes, I'm sure. The movie was beautiful because it was human. The bond that the movie flows around is one that we can understand, the mother that we're presented is one we're proud to see grow. The experience was so meaningful, I'm glad I could discover it with you, Joe. Thank you so much.
Thank you from the depths of my heart for this stunning and in the end somber, but beautiful explanation of the tale that is Maquia. The journey of a life well lived, regardless of the heart ache and loss along the way, is still far better than a life not lived at all. I again thank you for bringing these hidden gem's to light. ^_^
When I watched the movie for a second time, I heard Maquia call out to Leilia before she jumped, which shifted the scene entirely for me. I had thought the entire scene was Leilia trying to commit suicide only to be saved, but instead she knew she was being saved before she jumped
I wanted to let you know, that it is because of your review of this movie that I bought and watched it. It will forever be a favorite of mine for it made my soul smile. Thank you for your great work of bringing this even greater work to my and likely many others attention. Thank you.
i watched this movie online the moment it released because I was waiting so long for it - I kept watching the trailer over and over again haha. This movie definitely did not disappoint me and it has become one of my all time favorite films
Thank you for putting into words the words, thoughts, messages, and everything about this movie. I wish I could understand movies and anime like you and then craft them into such beautiful videos that are masterpieces on their own.
Thank you for the discovery of this beautiful and moving movie, that I was eager to watch after your first commentary video on its inception and its promises. I cried several times during the watching. And I had very profound and joy-tainted tears after, with a sense of peace, maybe some sort of liberation: life can be hard, cherished people and battles will be lost, and that's the essence of life and its beauty. I am alive, I love and I care, I embrace all of it :) Keep up with your inspirational and high quality videos opening us the world in and beyond Ghibli.
Thank you for these 2 video's, Joe. Maquia really deserves a lot more attention then it's been getting so far. Definitely my favorite movie of last year.

I did not had watched a movie that made me so emotional in a long time. Thanks for sharing this experience that gives one more reason to believe in true art. But that is the name of your game, my man.
The curse of outliving your mortal love ones. 🥺 Very sad indeed. Maquia's elders warn her not to fall in love with anyone outside their realm, lest she wish to encounter true loneliness in the end. You will live for centuries(100yrs) being young loli looking. They will all die before you. 😭 Tragic at its best
Great quality video as always. I have to be honest though, I remain unimpressed by Maquia, even after watching these two videos explaining how you appreciate it. Okada sure has talent, so I hope I will be like the guy who didn't like Sugata Sanshiro (1943) when it was released.
I finished the film before I watched your videos on it. I came here specifically to see if I could get this emptiness out of my chest or hell, even work through it but after watching this three times, I don't understand. I don't see the happiness. I see a mother who chose to not see her child live their full life. She only finds out as he's lying on his deathbed. I feel it was cruel, if anything. There are small joys but I just can't get that sinking feeling out of my chest about it all.
Easily the most beautiful anime I've ever seen in every aspect, if not the most beautiful movie. But... Is it bad that the scene that finally broke me was a different one for me?
Could you talk about nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind please? Because I like particularly this movie and the message that it want to Tell us. I would like to hear what do you think of it and the main character, nausicaa and the way she see this world where humans and nature fighting. If my words are not correct please excuse me. I am french but I hope you will understand what I wanted to say. Thank you for sharing with us your thoughts about what you love and feel in Anime ;)
I actually like the world building of Maquia but there's still some problem with it. I am sorry if this have nothing to do with the video. Your video is good at explaining about loosing which to me.is part of the world building. I still couldn't find the official map they were set in but it's ok. The capital city of the evil empire is built at at the banks of 3 huge rivers were they meet. These rivers are huge enough to actually move and entire fleet down or up stream which gave them probably lots of direct control to lots of places and an endless supply of water source for the empire if they build their empire that way. This too probably have more advantage to the evil empire. Then there's their political system. I am not sure if I am thinking too much but the contrast between the evil empire and the alliance the other kingdom made to fight them. The empire have one king sitting in the middle and the others are standing. Giving the perception that he is the greatest and the others must follow him while the Alliance the other kingdoms made have all their leaders sitting down and is even willing to listen to the plee for help from Iolph. I guess after that much loosing all the way of the film a little hope of justice is needed too. Then the world the empire is built in can also be one of its weakness. This means that the enemy too if taken control some of the rivers is able to put a fleet into the river and just spearhead through to the capital. I was thinking it is impossible for the empire to not know that they are loosing that badly if they manage to just capitulated like that but then yeah. The stratergic point it built in is also built to doom one day.

When does it talk about any loss aside of a mother and a child parting ways? And why does the movie need to plot around putting its protagonists in the false dilemma of having to choose between love interest and motherlover? I mean, the three or four times this guys have to choose they could easily get both, and in fact, they would have had it better! And why, why in the world, does leila abandon her child after 1 hour and a half of her only motto being her need to see her? She doesn't only abandon her, she attempts suicide in front of her, because she is free from... the need to see her? what the actual fuck! And how can maquia be such a boring selfless character? It would have been way more interesting if she hooked up with ariel, even if just a little, she might have been a little imperfect, instead of that joke of interracial love interest she is given. Her stepbrother was a way better choice too. Honestly, Maquia being such a good selfless mother, even as an adoptive mother, feels more like a reproach to Mari's actual mother than a message of forgiveness. Anyway, beautiful movie. Thank you, Beyond
"After all, Maquia promised not to cry, but we sure didn't"
This is the best one-sentence summary of this film I've heard
So very true . When she say that she is going to break the promise for not crying that really got me there😭
@@uttu998877 that's what got me too. I didn't cry.... but I came pretty close.
i was just about to write this very sentence
I felt that same thought there at the end of the film, when she says she breaks her promise... I realised what a hard promise that was
To me, Maquia is one of the best movie about love. Not a love for your partner but a love for a child and towards your own mother.
