Hard to believe Colbert's appendix was bursting while he films this episode... He's a hard core professional but glad he is alive and well now 🙏❤
My parents dragged my brother, sister and I to Carnegie Hall where we witnessed the amazing Leonard Bernstein conduct! At age 70 now this movie will help me relive a very special time in my life.
I'm envious! 😊😊😊
I have never seen Bradley Cooper look more happy.
I appreciate that Stephen meets great artists on their level with serious questions.
Colbert is a very talented and versatile artist.N.1!
It is touching how L.B., years after his death, is still giving us so much.Just by watching his performance I get the most beautiful side of classical music that he was willing to show us: the joy of music.
Indeed,he is perfect
Meanwhile, his appendix is bursting.
Colbert is a gifted interviewer, he asks such eloquent and incisive questions. It's like 60 Minutes level interviewing on a late night comedy show.
Have to thank Colbert for promoting a love of both classical music and sci-fi/fantasy novels on his prime time late show. Always has great discussions.
My God. Yes!
Ok, now we know that Stephen’s appendix was rupturing at this moment, and you’d never know it!
Leonard Bernstein was a Giant of a human being. When a friend of mine was dying of AIDS, and being abandoned by so many, Leonard threw him a party in the Hamptons.
I’m
I watched this the day after it aired and was so impressed with Cooper's passion for this portrayal and film. I also came back to it today just to see how Stephen made it through the show with a ruptured appendix! Glad he got such great care and is back on his feet.
I came back, too. Stephen really sucked the pain up hard. That was a ting.
Bradley Cooper is so talented - he only does his movies all out. He’s a pleasure to watch and I can’t wait to see Maestro.
He HAS to win an Oscar, you can tell he put everything into this movie
Cillian Murphy might have something to say about that.. and Mark Ruffalo
I could not agree more. I think this movie will change our lives --- as we attempt to see and understand the complexity of the greatest American conductor of our time.
If a 50 second clip of Maestro can move me to tears, I will be wrecked after watching this movie. Bradley Cooper will surely win an Oscar for his portrayal of Bernstein!
For sure!! 🙏🏽🥹❤️
I saw this movie last night in London I'm still wrecked 12 hours later
Went and saw the movie at Anglika Theatre this past weekend. OMG, what an amazing performance... I saw Leonard Bernstein when I was a child, the composure, way he talked, and his movement were just uncanny. Thank you for telling such a beautiful story of one of the greatest conductor and teacher of Tanglewood.
He moved just like him! I had a crush on Bernstein in my teens. Yes, a beautiful man. Cooper is too, and absolutely brilliant. I love the body of work he is creating. One day someone will do a film about him.
i just watched a couple minutes of the original bernstein conducting the mahler piece in the cathedral and noticed there was a moment while conducting where he hugged himself, which i thought was pretty unusual. and i see that in bradley's rendition he made the exact same gesture, which i think is kind of remarkable.
Yes, Mahler No.2 is life changing and proof of something greater than all of us. That London performance with Bernstein is one of the greatest achievements in human expression.
😊
"and proof of something greater than all of us" that seems unlikely, considering it was written and performed by humans. Which, last I checked, is us. For real it's a great piece BUT it is just an example of how great WE can be. Don't dimmish the man, and the musicians that actually made it by attributing it to some unmeasured, or unknown being.
I love Mahler 2 conducted by Boulez. Stunning!
@@SuspiciousQueso I've been performing for over 20 years all over the world, how long have you?
They are literally performing in a church.
The title is "Resurrection"
Get a clue dude, and love yourself more lol.
Go listen to more Mahler.
The higher power in this case, can be who or whatever you want, including your ego bahahaha
@@chouchoumuse2729 I will have to check it out for sure, thanks for the recommendation!
I can't wait to see this movie! When news first emerged about this movie, I thought, "Seriously, someone is going to portray LB conducting Mahler??" Now, I see the preparation and respect Bradley Cooper had for the project. Can't wait.
Amazing - I am so impressed with the level of study Bradley Cooper went through in order to be able to depict this icon so accurately. Conducting is way harder than it looks. 👏👏👏. Wow. Can't wait to see this film. I❤Bradley Cooper, he's so talented.
In the spring of 1972, I was fortunate to see Leonard Bernstein conduct an historic series of Mahler symphonies in Vienna with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.in the Musikverein. All the magical pieces were in place. I was a 22 year old music student. Venue: the Musickverein. The Vienna Philharmonic; Orchestra the VPO , These concerts gave me a life-long experience that still brings chills to me. They video taped these concerts and I think some may be on RUclips. I believe that this concert series was a successful part of Bernstein exposing the Mahler symphonies to a wider concert-going audiences. Of course the VPO was a world-class premiere orchestra. As students we could attend some of the rehearsals (seeing him conduct from behind the orchestra in the balcony.. We students were invited to an after-rehearsal casual party with Maestro Bernstein himself.
It was a life-changing series of mucial events. I was fortunate to see these concerts - the cemented my love of Mahler and Bernstein. At aga 22.
This interview was so inspiring that I almost levitated !!! The Passionately detail oriented
Bradley Cooper will win an Oscar for this role. ❤❤❤❤
Love Bradley! So talented, funny and kind!
Beautiful to see Bradley light up with so much purpose as he speaks about the making of the movie, I wish it was playing at all theaters. Seems like a movie for the big screen / sound. Interesting to hear his process - extraordinary that he’s been working on this for so many years, and committed to the retelling of Leonard’s life & loved. ❤
Bradley@ is a different breed is he. I can't imagine wearing different hats all at the same time. Props to him.
It’s a true capricornian trait. Multitalented, multifaceted, know how to play the long game, dedication the nth degree.
I'm so proud of his work as an artist. Bravo Maestrooooo 👏🏻👏🏻
Some interviews are thrilling. Thanks for this one!
I don’t think Stephen raved enough about this movie. I just saw this film. It is magnificent! It is the best movie I’ve seen in years- it beats Oppenheimer by a league. Cooper has proven himself to be level above all the other pretty boys who act, e.g.m Gosling, Ryan…what’s his name, etc. There were real orchestras and real choirs, and the music made me cry. And the story made me cry. The beauty of it, the challenge of it. The theater was in thrall. You could hear a pin drop. And of course there is laughter and delight. My God what on outsized life Bernstein lived, and what a remarkable, soaring, glorious film Cooper has made about him. Six years he spent. Go see this movie. it won’t be nearly as good on a small screen.
Stephen was literally dying and inso much pain as he was interviewing cooper. His appendix was bursting. Can you blame the guy? 😂
@@ernestmaciel
Exactly, and that is something that can kill you. My uncle died from a burst appendix. I don't how Stephen was able to conduct an interview as well as he did.
Bradley definitely deserves an Oscar for this movie as an actor and director! Love him to pieces ❤❤❤❤
Hearing Colbert’s questions and genuine interest in both Bradley Cooper and Leonard Bernstein’s work warms my heart 😊
When I saw Mr. Cooper in " Limitless " (the film), I knew he was one to watch. When he starts work on a role, few have the tenacity and dedication to performance that he summons for his craft. Keep your eyes on this superstar. He will be in for a long run.
And he will likely do 20 more.
I thought he said 25…😌
Six years! That’s dedication. 😊
OMG!! The Mahler 2nd scene of Bradley conducting (at 2:10) with arms flinging wide open and then swiftly back to clutching his body is SO powerful it brings me to tears! BRAVO IN ADVANCE, BRADLY!
A Star is Born was amazing …..I CAN NOT WAIT to see this film!!! 🙏🏽🥹❤️))))
It's love and dedication on top of towering talent.
Such a great interview. I just love Bradley Cooper. His passion for his work and over such a sustained amount of time is amazing.
“It was heaven, Stephen”
Meanwhile, Stephen’s insides are in literal HELL! 😂
Who's watching this now knowing Stephen's appendix had unknowingly burst while this interview was happening.
I observe, as a personal holiday I made up for myself, the anniversary of the first time I heard Mahler 2 live. It was the Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom Music Center, July 9, 1970. The conductor was: Leonard Bernstein.
Wow, I think that was the only time Bernstein conducted Cleveland from what I've read. I have a recording I believe taken from a radio broadcast, but being there live would have been memorable. I also didn't realize what a strong influence George Szell was on Lenny (saw an interview where he says how much he admired Szell which, to be honest, kind of surprised me given their different styles).
Decades ago, at the beginning of my university life, I was exloring classical music with amazing enthusiasm and I fell in love particularly with one symphony, Brahms's 4th.
I was slowly collecting version after version to compare the famous 4th movement.
The guy at the CD shop, an imposing, tall stout bald man, kept his shop in complete utter chaos. It was horrible and fantastic at the same time because it forced you to literally dig through stacks and stacks of CDs to find what you were looking for.
I asked him if he received some new version of Brahms 4th and replied asking me why I was so interested. "My favourite symphony, of course, that's why. Which symphony is you favourite?".
"Mahler's second" he said.
"Too long", I thought.
"Maybe in the future you'll change your mind" and he went on with his business.
The fact is that Mahler's 2nd, for you that never heard of it, lasts some 90 minutes and 1 single CD at most can store some 75 minutes so the symphony must be split in two parts.
For some reasons, I always tried to listen to it but alwasys stopped at the first CD, the first four out of five movements.
In retrospect, that's crazy, I know, but life's like that sometimes.
I still adore Brahms' 4th symphony but ask me to choose the best 8-10 minutes in symphonic music and, the moment I am writing now I have goosebumps, the best "total body experience" moment in the whole repertoire is the finale of Mahler's second.
Now that decades have passed, I love the whole symphony, from start to end... but the beauty of the first, say, 80 minutes, is also that they are leading to an end to all ends.
And it's true that when you watch the video with Bernstein conducting this part, that's a show in the show.
If you don't know this music, take your time, don't do this in a hurry, do it alone and let go, enjoy every tragic moment and finally explode of extasy in the end.
If you are a methodic person, first look for YT channel "Inside the score": there's a fantastic analysis of the Symphony.
Then go with Bernstein or Dudamel (but there are many other...) versions.
It's not guaranteed, but IT COULD change your musical life.
Great. Thank you for your passion. I have had a similar experience. For me it was Mahler 9th. After hearing all of them I could get 'my ears on' I still have to go to James Levine's version 1979 and sorry, I am a record guy, the 4th movement is 29min long but, gladly(!) on one record side. (When it finishes I vaporize into atoms, if this makes sense but is in contrast to Mahler 2nd. To each their own.)
En de uitvoering van Mahler 2 met Claudio Abbado !!!
Thank you for your generosity in sharing this with us-- :)
Awesome thru and thru. Thank you for sharing your story in such detail.
For me it was also the finale of the Mahler second, until I got the chance to sing Kurwenal in Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, where the 3rd act left me in tears while on stage. I simply couldn't stop myself from sobbing. It was very unprofessional but I never, ever felt like this before in my life. One other opera that can make me lose my feeling of time and space is Parsifal... An inexplicably astounding piece of music that makes 4.5 hours of music feel like it took an hour to listen to it and simultaneously like whole lifetimes are passing by in eternal quest of spiritual redemption. No wonder Wagner didn't call it an opera but rather Bühnenweihfestspiel, expanded translation would be: a festive play for the consecration of the (holy) musical theatre stage
I can't believe Stephen was in the stages of appendicitis rupture during this interview. 😢
I need to see this movie! As a musician myself I am so excited! I smell an Oscar!❤❤❤
An epic "Raging Bull" type of transformation. I barely recognize Bradley. Robert De Niro gained something like 50 lbs for the role. Looks like Bradley lost 50. Looking forward to the film, bigtime!
Spectacular! Absolutely stunning and I look forward to seeing it over holidays. Congratulations Bradley !
Glad you lived through this evening, Stephen. Been there, done that... ❤!
What a privilege and joy it must have been for Bradley Cooper to conduct the London Symphony!
Outstanding interview. I think the only thing that could stop Bradley Cooper from winning an Oscar is--Oppenheimer. I mean, how do you compare such performances? They're subjective. Of course with the Academy anything is possible these days...Oh yes, I will let you know...just as soon as I see Maestro...ha!
Watching the scene from the Ely Cathedral , the music and the vocals and Bradley Cooper made me weep- the beauty to my senses was overwhelming. Amazing
The conducting scene gave me chills throughout. When the clip ended, the chills ended. I never experienced anything like that before.
Certainly made me want to see the movie and explore Mahler’s 2nd.
Saw many symphonies as a child. The only one that really grabbed me was a Mahler. The 9th I think.
I grew up with Mahler. Especially the 2nd Symphony.
Every Mahler piece is the greatest ever composed, especially the symphonies!
Such a lovely, humble man. I will make a point to see this movie.
Bradley Cooper delivered such a magnificent interpretation and performance here 🙏🏼 Incredible
Who really deserves an award more, in retrospect? Tough call. Such dedication to their respective crafts
I love how invested Colbert is.
Omg he has to win an Oscar ❤ love him
Wow. He does look like Bernstein conducting. That's some kinda acting I didn't know existed.
This interview brought me to tears - can’t wait to watch the film!
Bradley got that right, Mahler's 2nd is the most magnificent piece of music ever written.
May He Now Get the Oscar denied him in A Star Is Born!..😎
Bradley, I applaud the daring love story. Mr Cooper your comment " possibly could not have done it tends to your faith.Mr Bradley Cooper Hollywood awards you the, Academy Award Thank you for your outstanding inspiration
Bradley blew me away. He inhabited Bernstein. Sometimes I would forget it was him until seeing seeing bright blue eyes. One of the best movies I've ever seen. Bravo.
Can't wait for this movie! xox
Hard to believe this is the same actor who made multiple hangover movies (as well as some others…) but I know they all must start somewhere. Bradley’s growth has been phenomenal. Looking forward to what future BC films look like…😌
I mean, the Hangover movies could have been practice for at least one scene in Maestro, But seriously, the juxtaposition is quite something. Plus throw Rocket Raccoon in there...
Love Bradley Cooper. What a cool talented dude. I wish I had a bigger brother like him 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤓🤓
I am saying this now bradley cooper will win Best actor
What an American treasure Bernstein was! So glad he will come to the Big Screen and Mahler with him
Just the clip made me cry...❤
omg 😢 Colbert doing this lovely interview with a rupturing appendix 😧😭🥰 plz feel better💖
Wow that was Brian Klugman!??? 😲💕👏👍

Cool to watch interesting interviews. I am amazed at how colbert is relevant whatever the subject and even talking to someone that just spend years researching Bernstein. Impressive
Maestro! That is indeed an awesome role to have, and you got to do it for 6 minutes for real despite that's not your passion, that's pretty cool. And inviting your bff, dawww
We at Martha’s Vineyard Sailing Camp would race against Leonard Bernstein’s children. He came to our bean supper and I waited on him. It was extra thrilling for me because that year in high school I sang a soprano solo from West Side Story.
Thank you Bradley. I love the way you live your life.
How can someone be this gorgeous?

Can't wait to see this.
Feels like this movie was part of a divine plan meant to be part of Mr. Coopers life.
Leonard v Tar is such a Second City quip
Great guy.
I posted a video about Leonard Bernstein on my RUclips channel that documents what he was really doing on stage as a conductor. There's a phenomenon in the press where they pick 2 or 3 classical musicians and designate them as sacred cows. No matter what the sacred cows do on stage, the press refers to it as "the greatest." Bernstein was one of those sacred cows. The television appearances he did show him adding trumpets to the orchestra with Beethoven's symphonies and then when the interviewer asks him about Beethoven's ability to orchestrate, he says, " IT'S BAD. He has the trumpets sticking out and they're drowning out everybody else!"
Hard to Imagine that Colbert was enduring the agony of a ruptured appendix during this interview. He could have died from sepsis. Glad your ok Stephen.
QUERO ASSISTIR O FILME MAESTRO 😊
Now I want to see Bernstein vs Godzilla..
I love the LSO!!!❤❤❤
Are they the only orchestra that have done the film scores with John Williams? I know he's done stuff with Boston (any others?) but I don't know the specifics.
I really like bradly cooper ears . His ears like carry muligun maol is so special your ears is like iranian man so gogoli
I know I shouldn't have... but I imagined Bugs during that clip.
I hate to say it, but for a second there I saw Steve Martin doing "I'm a wi-ild and craa-azy guy!"🤪
carey mulligan is my favourite actress.
Bernstein's "Conducting" was always exceptional. He had good intentions and big emotions, but this type of conduction only could work with pro-orchestras, which actually doesn't need a conductor. 🎉
As a person who's sung in large choruses with orchestras accompanying, the conductor generally is a figure head more than anything (even in smaller less professional groups too who rehearse together regularly). You usually memorize the dynamics and the lyrics and the rhythms so the conductor basically just keeps the tempo (but you as the musician keep the tempo with your own body also). The only time a conductor is actually needed for a final performance is if the group just got the piece or had minimal rehearsal time and didn't know it.
@@HouseMDaddict
Generally right. But also to share his idea of this piece. Just imagine Mahler 5. without a conductor.
By the way, I'm a professional classical musician. I have many funny stories of arm-swinging-people.
@@flexoking8047😂
@@HouseMDaddict Wouldn't you say it is the other way around? You basically go with the internal flow of the tempo, and the conductor shows everything else, the intensity of sound, phrasing, energy and character?
Does the conductor rehearse with you, help bring the orchestra to a unified vision of what the performance will feel like?
Who is here after his video explaining his appendix exploding!
I am XD
Have no idea why, but never much liked Cooper. But seeing that clip of him conducting - I was very moved. I definitely will watch this
Doesn't Bradley Cooper look like Novak Djokovic or maybe the other way around? Looking forward to seeing Maestro in the movie theater.
I want to know what Lydia Tar think of this movie.
I think your progress has been on the fast-track Bradley and you do quite well. Please think twice about what you say in public. For those of us that were born years ago and have appreciated some of the historical masters, be careful.

Stephen is so intimidated by Bradley COOPER. ☺
He had a ruptured appendix while running the interview - whisked off to surgery just afterward! I don’t think Steven is intimidated by anyone; just having a very bad night. Could have died if he hadn’t gone to the hospital.
