This deserves much more than just 30k views, with how much work and care put into writing the script, narrating it and actually explaining the game and its elements. Well done, sir, I applaud you.
The breakdown of the 5 rings was some top-tier some weaponized weebiness. I enjoyed the explaination of fight mechanics with the context of your quick breakdown of what each element represents.
The fact that this video doesn't have upwards of a million views is a crime, boy what a great video. Really love the way you approach covering the games you do, which really shines with this video in particular imo. Keep it up man, your stuff is fire! ...and earth, water, wind and void, I guess.
holy shit my dude, i was today years old when i learned from you, that the CLANG is a sign for a counter attack. i during my first few playthroughs of sekiro i just learned to telegraph their movements and while attacking watch out for counters. RE: i was just checking via other videos and i think the same counts for the player. when you deflect, there will be a clang as an indicator for a possible opening for you
It wasn't until you got to Air that I realised you weren't just re-reading some of the game's flavour text, but had actually gone out of your way to apply the text to the gameplay. I came to your channel from a clip of funny CK2 death sounds, but this is the kind of stuff that's made me stay. I look forward to being able to say "I was one of the first 5k subs" when your channel blows up.
Small nitpick: The Duo Ape fight does not really work like you described it. The apes are programmed in such a way that their attacks mostly never overlap unless you "force" them to do so. So whenever I do a Mortal Journey I always just play it safe and simply wait for the few openings on the Guardian Ape and kill him without even touching brown Ape. It is still not a fun boss, but it is not really a duo boss fight like the Seven Ashina Spears + General mini-boss as the brown Ape in practice just work like an extension of the moveset.
Yo whaaaaaaat? I had no idea, I just assumed they were gonna play dirty and tried to keep my distance (and like every enemy in sekiro is designed to snag you if you're trying to run away)
Definitely one of my favorite reviews/analyses of Sekiro so far. Makes me wanna check out the Book of Five Rings. I've only ever seen quotes from it used in Shogun 2. And it's nice to see you givin' some subtle love to Shadows Dance Twice. Best Sekiro parody. Btw, there's only one Lone Shadow in the Juzou fight. The normal one that joined in was one of the three Interior Ministry shinobi who were for some reason just hanging out on the burning roof from across the boss arena lol. It took me several playthroughs to realize that the double ape fight actually has a manageable pattern once the seething rage at seeing the second ape fall into the arena subsides. Hopefully this becomes helpful for anyone who stumbles upon this comment: You don't need to kill or distract the second ape. You don't even need to lock onto her any time during the fight. No need to waste spirit emblems on any Combat Arts, save it all for the spear that yanks out the worm from the Guardian Ape's neck. Ape 2 generally stays back when Headless Ape is using sword attacks on you. Deflect those, and you're likely to bait his strong attack that, when deflected right, sends him straight to the ground for you to pull the worm out for massive vitality and posture damage. Once the worm is out, consistently, Ape 2 will always jump on you, and you can step dodge backwards immediately after pulling the worm out to avoid her. Works every time, as long as you don't have your back right up against a wall. So baiting the strong attack with a lot of space behind you is ideal. She will always attack you with a long string of ground slams whenever the Headless Ape does his terror scream. You'll see her running at you through the red mist every time. As she's doing this combo, Headless Ape will always run away from you. Trying to chase him with sword attacks while he dodges you is a waste of time and puts you at risk of being hit by Ape 2's combo off-screen, so just keep running til she's done and try to bait the big boy into attacking you with his sword again. Learning that their behaviors in relation to each other isn't actually random has long since made the fight much less infuriating.
Really great video. Had no idea about the connections between the Five Rings and Sekiro, though it makes total sense. Really hope your channel gets more attention. Video is well edited, script is good and it's a nice to watch and eventually rewatch. I like how you kinda mix Sseth and Mandalore style, they are good models for videos like that for sure. Here this is more Mandalore than Sseth clearly. your Crusader King was a nice mix of both. Regarding the Void Book, i think the main aspect Musashi is talking about is how reaching the Void is being in the "Flow", an heightened state of mind, where your conscious and subconscious align. Something like, when you are doing something that requires lot of effort, and the song you listening to makes you do it better.
Lmao I was thinking about this video the other day, wondering if I've just gotten worse 🤔 I'll return to this level of effort eventually lol, I just can't justify spending 3 months on a video atm
I loved this review/video, it is really a masterpiece. I think this is what you're best at. I enjoy Sseth's style, but this is where your style comes out strongest as its own thing, and it's a very enjoyable experience in its own right. I hope you continue with it.
you can actually make the demon miss his mid range fire throw attack if you run straight to him after he does his charge attack. the fire will go over your head by the time he does it if you do it immediately. but great video regardless mate 👍
Great video! Definitely makes me want to pick up Sekiro again, haven't played since I beat Lady Butterfly in December. I like the way you incorporated the rings into the structure of the video, gave an engaging structure to the commentary. Also thanks for the shoutout even if I didn't end up helping much, your further explanation of your understanding of what Void is in the video was quite interesting. Also didn't expect to see myself playing red dead at 1:20 lol. I know nothing about Japanese folklore, you mentioned you didn't have time to go into that here, but I think that would be an interesting video on its own.
Just finished it the other day (Shura 😢) i have to say it's easily the second best game I've ever played. I done usually replay games straight away, but i can't stop thinking about this one.❤
I agree with all of your Points, I just really hope they do more Games like Sekiro, because I personally cant see any other Company doing such a good Job with the Game. They really perfected everything I ever wanted from a Game, the only thing I was disappointed was, that it wasnt open world, but maybe thats gonna happen.
You pretty much nailed my thoughts about Sekiro. It's easily one of my favorite games of all time and beating The Glock Saint on ng+4 with bell Demon and charnless will forever be one of my proudest gaming achievements
"if you were still playing this like a Souls game" 🙋 I feel called out 😅. I played for 50 hours till I learned to deflect. Played it like a Souls game to the end. I still do for most bosses. 😆 I said screw your swords clashing Miyazaki and beat all the bosses by reducing their vitality to zero. 🙏 praise FromSoftware for allowing the game to be played incorrectly to completion.
i feel the same about the music...my first souls game was bloodborne so i had high expectations for more memorable melodies when i played sekiro. But other than that, it was a great game!
at 27:06 I noticed after many trials against Ishin's, he has 2 move sets for it, if you're too close to him he'll do the move you showcased, too far and he'll do the normal cross, iirc he has plenty of moves like that during the fight where if you're too close he'll flip to another move whereas too far he'll do the move you're usually accustomed to but I can't remember which those are
the reason why i love sekiro more than any other souls game is the bonfire man, it's close to the combat/boss, no need to run far dodging all bs just to fight and die again to the main boss, it chipped away my soul bit by bit coz most of your gameplay is respawn on your last bonfire which is so far far away but sekiro is kinda forgiving on that aspect, i'm not getting bored so fast because i just take a couple of step and hey, the boss is infront of me already.
I also hated Demon of Hatred on my first playthrough, and ended up beating him Dark Souls style, no parrying. Very long and tedious fight. Later, in my Charmless/Demon Bell playthrough, I forced myself to parry him. Used umbrella for the fire attacks. Fight was a lot more engaging and maxing his posture is way shorter than emptying his health.
When I first tried Sekiro on a borrowed copy, I made it to Owl and gave up. Very odd, considering how much I love dodging and parrying in literally every other Souls game. This video has given me a second wind though, and I might get my own copy after I've bought all my school books. Fantastic work as always, especially with the parallel to the Book of Five Rings and well-worded interpretation of Void. Also very fun hearing you speak Japanese so naturally. Lots of very strong comedic touches, I'm especially fond of the bullet-deflect segment and you forgetting that horse guy's name.
Owl is a respectable place to get filtered. I ended up with a lot more clips of getting mad at him than I'd like to admit. I'm glad you enjoyed the five rings aspect, I was seriously starting to doubt it when the video got really long.
Another annoying philosophy major here. I understood void as something similar to Pseudo-Dionysus' negative theology (the nothing that transcends both reality and nonreality, which is God) or Lacan's Real in psychoanalysis (the black hole at the center of subjective experience itself, which cannot be imagined or captured in language but around which all of experience orbits). In both cases there's a sort of transcendent nullity that, despite being a non-thing, still has a place within a real system. also cool video
I haven't finished the video past the spoiler mark but I genuinely hope you keep the gross outtakes in purely out of spite I think they're fucking hilarious
you can make the entire game easier by killing corrupted monk first and then guardian ape so you dont have to fight ape and gf befor monk (you still need to kill snake eyes tho)
34:30 considering I killed the ape after getting the mortal blade it's even more annoying had the tools but sekiro doesn't have the brain to kill the centipede on the first encounter mortal blade or not
Yeah, that clip was just showing my in-the-moment irrational reaction lol. I usually just let go of the stick when I see him start it, so it caught me off guard whenever he did the other version
I never beat ishin or demon, mostly cos I'm a shitter, but i cope with it by saying "Aw, i don't have all the skills and don't wanna grind, what a shame 🤡"
Demon is optional and id really recommend skipping him he fuckin sucks. Isshin on the other hand, will probably take a few hours lol. I have a lot more footage than I'd like to admit of dying to him and losing my cool

you can puppeteer the general next to the seven spears guy, just use a gachins sugar.
o'rin is an awesome and quick fight if you just deflect her, even if you haven't faced corrupted monk yet.
